Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One small dog. It s just a normal weekend. What could possibly go wrong?
In Truly Madly Guilty, Liane Moriarty turns her unique, razor-sharp eye towards three seemingly happy families.
Sam and Clementine have a wonderful, albeit, busy life: they have two little girls, Sam has just started a new dream job, and Clementine, a cellist, is busy preparing for the audition of a lifetime. If there s anything they can count on, it s each other.
Clementine and Erika are each other s oldest friends. A single look between them can convey an entire conversation. But theirs is a complicated relationship, so when Erika mentions a last minute invitation to a barbecue with her neighbors, Tiffany and Vid, Clementine and Sam don t hesitate. Having Tiffany and Vid s larger than life personalities there will be a welcome respite.
Two months later, it won t stop raining, and Clementine and Sam can t stop asking themselves the question: What if we hadn t gone?
In Truly Madly Guilty, Liane Moriarty takes on the foundations of our lives: marriage, sex, parenthood, and friendship. She shows how guilt can expose the fault lines in the most seemingly strong relationships, how what we don t say can be more powerful than what we do, and how sometimes it is the most innocent of moments that can do the greatest harm.

Great book from a proven author.
very well crafted. Excellent writing.
Love the author and have enjoyed her other books. This book was entertaining and had great characters, but the ending of the book seemed a little weak.
It took me longer than usual, to get through this book. It was typical Liane Moriarity, with her complicated characters and twisted mystery plot. It goes back and forth between what happened on the day of the BBQ, and events that precede that day and those after it.
So many twists and turns in the lives of best friend, Clementine and Erika and their respective spouses, Sam and Oliver. What happened that day, had a huge impact on everyone, as blame was placed and the blow back is bounced around. It does keep you guessing until the final chapters, as layers of the event are peeled away. I enjoyed the story and was glad that I stayed with it. This author doesn’t fail to entertain, as usual.
I did not feel It up to par with some of her others. I was disappointed in this story.
As always, I found this author to be interesting and realistic. The characters each had a story to tell from his or her own perspective. I couldn’t put it down
Typical Liane Moriaty, great read and kept me turning the pages!
I thought this book was tedious. The author teased around a story line but it never captured attention. The characters were one-dimensional and their relationships to one another didn’t resonate.
Author has a gift – the ability to provide insight into people: their motivations, priorities, relationships, values, fears, etc – but without the clumsiness most of us struggle with giving words to what we see. Almost casually, as she presents and develops her characters, she gives us that wisdom always wrapped in a story we can all relate to. How often do you underline or bracket passages when reading a novel?!
I really liked this book At first I thought it was too much like Big Little Lies but as I read more I realized it had its own twists and turns. Very enjoyable. I highly recommend it.
A total surprise and eyeopener. Never saw the ending coming. This should be made into a series like the author’s “Big Little Lies” was.
I can’t believe I have never read Liane Moriarty before, but I know I will be reading much more of her in the months head!
I absolutely loved this book. One word of caution: if you don’t like books that jump between past and present, than this book might bother you, however, the jumping around truly serves a purpose in that it builds incredible uncertainty and tension into the journey of reading this book so I urge you to STICK WITH IT!
If you are a suburban parent this book is ABSOLUTELY for you, although I would argue it is for anyone older than 35 because a lot of the friction is created between people who do have children and don’t. The question of why people choose to have children and how they parent comes up again and again. Ms. Moriarty does an amazing job of building a moving and high-tension novel out of everyday events and interactions that most of us have experienced or know someone who has. She keeps us guessing for well over half of the book about an alluded to event that has changed everyone’s lives for the worse. The suspense is intense and the conclusion is satisfying.
What is most original about this book is that you get to see a part of the story from the perspective of almost every single character that is introduced including some of the children. Ms. Moriarty is a master of letting you see the world through someone else’s eyes and I guarantee she will give you insight into your own friends and family because of this book.
How could a crisis at a perfectly normal barbecue unravel the lives of six quirky, weird, original characters?
I am a huge fan of Liane Moriarty. I loved loved THE HUSBAND’S SECRET and BIG LITTLE LIES so much I always but her on preorder.
This book is my least favorite of all her books, but she is so wonderful and insightful, this book is still quite good.
What I didn’t like: At first i didn’t like any of the characters. I didn’t like the way the book was structured. There would have a chapter in the present and then one BEFORE THE BARBECUE. There was this huge buildup to find out what happened at the barbecue. Somehow this made the story drag for many chapters. But I kept reading.
What I liked: After I got into this book…and we’re talking maybe two hundred pages…the character development was so superb, the characters grew on me. I began to care deeply about their lives.
It’s upsetting to think that one crisis can totally destroy the foundation of anyone’s world. I have had things like this happen in my life..
It’s never fun to realize how fragile our lives are…how a single event or a single person or a hurricane can change everything. For the better. Or for the worse.
Women’s fiction with multifaceted characters!
You will keep reading this book to find out all the unspoken secrets.
If your a fan of the Arthor you’ll read this book and it’s an ok read. Just not nearly as good as all her other books. Serious story no humor.
Moriarty finds fascinating themes to explore in the lives of everyday people. Her characters are so vivid and believable which is her great strength as a writer.
Strongly disliked the story for the first half because I was so frustrated with the slow reveal. Felt like she was toying with the reader. But the story was SO worth the initial annoyance! Great twist that broke my heart with a character’s redemption. Ended up loving it.
Once you try a Liane Moriarty novel, you’re going to want to read all of them. Do it. They are ALL good.
Great character studies. All the more impressive because of the number and variety of characters.
