This is a fantastic mystery and a glimpse into the Amish community. This is the first book by this author that I’ve read but I intend to read more of this series!!
I received a review copy of this book from the author at my request and this is my honest opinion. This was a mostly good, clean, easy read. I would have preferred a little more information about the relationship between Jane and her soon-to-be-ex-husband than what was revealed at the beginning as it would have given a better insight into Jane’s character. However, since most of the story revolves around Jane living with her sister and brother-in-law, I assume the author didn’t feel it was necessary. I liked all of the characters for the most part and felt the story moved a little slowly but not so much that it inhibited my enjoyment. Where I really had problems with the book was the ending. Everything is rocking along with Jane and the “sisters” doing their detective impersonations, and Jane runs into the murderer. She’s not even aware this is the murderer and they proceed to confess right out of a clear blue sky. Really? I know this is basically an Amish cozy mystery, but I still expected more than that. It almost felt as if the author realized she was about to get to her deadline and had to finish up in a hurry, so she did. However, I will most likely check out the next book in the series to see how it goes.
I absolutely love this book! I wish i could give it more than 5 stars. Ruth Hartzler has been added to my favorite authors.
True Confections is a fun cozy mystery about Jane Delight, a woman whose husband surprises her with a divorce on her 50th birthday. Left with nothing, she returns to her Amish roots. Living in the apartment above her twin sister’s cupcake shop, she resigns herself to working in the bakery and enjoying her sister’s company. After several months alone, the 80 something year old sisters that share the large apartment with Jane return from a world cruise. The lively sisters return just after a man who has been pressuring Jane’s sister to sell the bakery drops dead in the shop. Jane and her spirited roommates try to solve the mystery of the man’s murder before it can be pinned on Jane herself.
Jane learns that life exists after the blow of the divorce. Her extremely entertaining roommates make the adventure an absolute joy.
I am in love with the characters. I love that it’s a completely clean book, no swearing, no inappropriate topics or innuendo. It’s very well written. Just an enjoyable book. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
BONUS: traditional Amish recipes in the back! Can’t beat that!
