**** SPOILER ALERT ****
Forrest delivers a story with a fine balance of action and exposition in “Tristan’s Choice: The Darkest Day #2”. Again the author does a superb job of world building and character development.
We see action, friendship, intrigue, love, betrayal and redemption as we tag along with Mila and crew on their next adventure as they try to conclude a treaty of alliance with one alien species and attempt to defeat the murderous intent of another alien species.
I can hardly wait to see what happens in the next volume of the series.
In the interest of transparency: I was given a review copy of this book and I am voluntarily sharing this review.
It is my own honest opinion.
Given a diplomatic mission that was inevitably going to go sideways, Tristan does what he can to anticipate and mitigate the damage. Little did he know just how sideways it would go. Although it took a little to get started, once the action and intrigue picks up it is a non-stop crazy ride. Mixed into all of it is Mila’s precarious situation and a looming expiration date and the friendship that can’t be more with Tristan. Lots of good twists on all sides of the situation but I won’t say more because spoilers. The logic behind the shape shifting and how it works was well imagined. Strong addition to the series opening some seriously interesting possibilities for the next book. Lots of questions and threads left hanging, but this book did have a full story arc, no cliff hanger.
This is book 2 in the series, and although the author provides enough information that you can enjoyably read this as a standalone, it is best enjoyed after reading Mila’s Shift, particularly if you are the type of reader enjoys relationship nuances and character development.
After making it safely through the ‘Orleans’ sabotaged diplomatic mission to meet with the first-ever extraterrestrials, Captain Tristan Faulk, Pilot Mila Dragomirov, and Kyle Avery have returned Earthside and have remained friends. In fact, Mila has moved in with Tristan but maintained an uneasy, platonic relationship. Both want more, but Mila cannot fathom a future together because of the country’s suspicious regard of shifters and her masquerade as best friend, May Trace.
While Kyle works to uncover and capture those behind the ‘Orleans’ mission failure, Mila tries to come to terms with how to deal with both May’s family (who do not know that May is actually dead) and her own (who have no idea why their daughter disappeared without a trace so many years ago.
Captain Faulk receives orders to try again to get the Earth’s delegation to a meeting with the newly encountered aliens, the Incirrina. With Mila and Kyle as his only crew on a small shuttle, he successfully get the diplomats to Earth’s moon and the Kennedy Moon Station where they can finally begin negotiations to learn about each other and help each other out. However, all is not as it appears in the Earth legate and the aliens and Earthlings must work together against a new and powerful common enemy.
After waiting for what felt like a year until this second book in “The Darkest Day” series came out (it wasn’t that long really), it arrived and I could not put it down. This was one of those books where any interruption to reading it annoyed me to no end! I have so enjoyed this series. I’ve bonded with these characters; they feel like friends. The main characters have a lot going on in their private lives besides the main story thread I’ve outlined above and I look forward to some resolution for them. And now, the wait begins again. This author seems to write exactly to my taste and I look forward to more from her in the future.
Received as a review copy, this is an honest review. The character of Mila is a shifter with secrets that are life changing and inventive that she fight to keep from becoming known in this wonderful sci fi read.
on ch. 6 now. too soon to rate, but not to comment. it hurts, because mila. if you know, then I know yer gonna read this/she’s in it. so ya i’m biased. if you don’t know, I think page 9 is where I was hooked. I think most can do 9 pages without a thought. some can’t/fer you, try it n I think you’ll thank me. as to premise, nothing quite like it comes to mind/so pretty original as a whole, points fer that. so if sff is yer thing…–k, done now. still crying. choking on that last line. first half, had to take breaks from the intensity. back half, got in a rush to see what’s next. wished I could read faster, not from pacing, that’s perfect. whatabout Tristan? whatabout him. kidding, he’s dealing with heavy stuff too, lots it turns out. fer starters he’s facing an impossible choice…not telling. think you know the next line
