On Perfect Harmony, the ambitious competitors heat things up on stage and off…
Cody Rivers is determined to be a rock star, but couch-surfing between bar shows gets old fast. Joining an a cappella group for a new singing competition show could be his last chance at real fame–unless the college boy from the heart of the country messes it up for him. Lucas Norwood is everything gothy, glittery … everything gothy, glittery Cody is not–conservative, clean-cut, and virginal. But when a twist in the show forces them together, even the sweetest songs get steamy as the attraction between them lights up the stage. Lucas wants to take it slow, but Cody’s singing a different tune–and this time it may be a love song…

Again, I’m going to be flat out honest with you and tell you there are some editing issues with this book. It was put out by Kensington, a respectable house, so I don’t know what their deal was, but that’s on the publisher, not the author. The book concept is really fun: reality tv show competition that gets super-duper hot. There are some incredibly sexy scenes, too, some of the dirtiest/hottest I read this year. The relationship isn’t all about the sex, though. There’s sweetness and personal growth, too. The psychological exploration of the more conservative main character and the family expectations that bind him are so well done. I’ve thought about this book a lot since reading it. I also enjoyed Status Update by Ms. Albert, and it was better edited (put out by Carina, by the way), but I loved Treble Maker and these characters just a little bit more.
I wasn’t sure what I expected from this book but it was surprisingly wonderful and really spoke to me. Purity culture is so toxic, especially at a small Midwestern college like Lucas attends. I have experienced much of the same toxic emphasis on purity during my own college experience (even had to sign an honor code as a freshman like Lucas). I loved the representation here of just how damaging purity culture is to your mental and emotional health. Cody was a complex character and I loved his growth throughout the book. The only reason Treble Maker got four stars was because there were significant POV mistakes that needed some editing. Other than that, this was a truly excellent book. Can’t wait to read the next one!
One of the best romances.
Annabeth Albert certainly can write. I’ve read all of her books, and not one has disappointed. Opposites attract is one of my favourite tropes, so this was right up my street. Cody and Lucas are so different, yet so similar, both drowning in insecurities. I enjoyed reading how they eventually came together, discovering how their needs matched. Very well written, with some adorable secondary characters. Looking forward to the next book.
Apart from the unique setting, it was the contrast between the MCs that had me absolutely hooked! They had such awesome personalities! Annabeth Albert is great at delivering stories you find yourself glued to!
this great read based off of characters that seem to be created from the sing off or pitch perfect, a perfect opposites attract story created in the world of singing! A great start to this new series!
Talk about SLOW burn! Definitely one that smoldered and had flashes of fire before going up in flames. Lucas took some time to grow on me but his character really had a lot of “stuff” to unpack mentally and I’m glad that Ms Albert took the time to “do him justice”. It really gave a lot more depth to his character. I kind of was hoping for more of Cody’s backstory but the glimpses we see really do help explain some of his initial relationship reluctance.
Holy moly! This was fantastic!! Cody Rivers just wants to a music star. He and a group of friends are on a reality show trying to become the next best musical talent. He’s a got a tough goth, punk rocker vibe going on. Lucas Norwood is in a competing a cappella group. He’s a bass, and super clumsy! He’s taken a celibate pledge. Cody tempts Lucas like no other. They couldn’t be more opposite!! When they are forced to work together in the same group, their chemistry explodes. I loved Cody and Lucas sooo much!!! They were perfect for each other. They brought out the best in each other. This is one of the best reads for me this year, sooo good, fantastic!! I’m voluntarily leaving a review from an advanced copy that I was gifted. Thank you so much for letting me read your art. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
3.5 rounded up
With loveable characters and an easily-read story, Treble Maker is a sweet, angst-light read that’s great for the mornings when you’re just waking up with a cup of warm coffee or tea.
I’m a bit late writing this review so I won’t go into as much detail as I usually do. But to put it simply, while at times it moves a bit slowly, Treble Maker is an incredibly sweet story of opposites attracting. And for Lucas, overcoming those familial binds and expectations we all can relate to at least a little bit to become his own person and be who he wants to be and with whom he wants to be.
I especially loved Cody who was a really strong character overall. With a very defined and layered personality, his sweetness and protectiveness beneath it all came out for Lucas, and my heart melted every time it did.
Wholly an enjoyable and well-written story, I will read the other books in this series at some point. I recommend this to anyone looking for something easy to read and light.
This is my review of the audiobook:
This is a great opposites attract romance. Cody used to be similar to Lucas, but rejection from the people who should have supported him has turned him into a self-absorbed, driven man whose only concern is himself. Lucas is the ultimate good boy, and he’s determined to keep it that way. Never mind that he has dreams that don’t follow the rules he’s been taught, and that Cody is the kind of man Lucas secretly fantasizes about.
Cody and Lucas help each other to grow into better men. And while that happens, we get to watch the back-stabbing and maneuvering that goes on behind the scenes of a televised singing competition. I love this story, and I think the narrator did a great job with helping to bring Cody and Lucas to life.
Liked it read while series some time ago.
