When you think of pirates, you think of buried treasure, treasure maps, mutiny, swashbuckling, greed, parrots on shoulders, wooden legs… This book has it all. I believe that this was the book that made it so.
Want a classic pirate adventure? Here it is!
It’s understandable why this book has lasted so long and inspired so many other books. It’s very entertaining with great rounded characters.
It was way ahead of its time. Long John Silver is one of the most complex characters ever put down on paper.
Just go read it. That is all I should say. I can guarantee I will read this book over and over again. I LOVE this book! In fact I have already read it quite a bit. 😉 possibly my favorite classic of all time! The characters are all so unique. And the warning to the “hesitating purchaser” in the beginning makes me smile. I love pirate stories, but this one tops them all, with mutiny, stealing an entire ship… and spoiler (HIDING IT!) Read it! Please… I beg you. You won’t regret it. I would say this book is for all ages.
This is the first grown-up book I read as a child, and I’ve read it half a dozen times over the years. It was thrilling, it taught me how a boy could be clever in the world of adults, how a boy could be moral in the world of corruption, and how a boy could hold his own with pirates and squires. It had mystery, heart, exotic locales, and a great narrative arc, that works as well when I read it a few years ago as when I was 8.
Shiver me timbers, I was beginning to think Jim Hawkins would never survive Treasure Island. Each year I try to read a classic novel that I have never read before. This year I realized I had seen the movie Treasure Island many years ago, but never read the book. I have been listening to the audio edition by Brilliance Audio and the narrator really brought to life the various characters, mainly young Jim Hawkins, pirate: Long John Silver, Captain Smollet, the doctor and many others. I tend to be a romantic kind of girl, but there is nothing wrong with this fast paced sea adventure. One of the best by Robert Louis Stevenson!
What a lot of fun! Every boy should read this: pirates, buried treasure, battles! Ok, girls will like it too.
Ruby?
Treasure Island is one of the original adventure novels. It features exotic locations, a long sea voyage, the hunt of treasure and, of course, pirates. Although the young Jim Hawkins is the main protagonist this book is not written for children. The presence of other characters like Long John Silver add a greater depth to the narrative. Israel Hands makes a fine villain and there is no doubt that he intends to kill Jim Hawkins, no matter how young he is. Stevenson writes with energy and this emanates from the page. I read this book when I was young but I have re-read it several times in later life and it never gets boring, which is the sign of a good book to me.
