I volunteered to read Travels of Quinn. Thanks
to the Cozy Review Crew for the opportunity.
My opinion is voluntary and my own.
Sasscer Hill has that knack for combining that best of all talents – gripping story-telling – with a thoroughly researched acquaintance with her subject theme. And her subjects are always grabbers. The twists and turns of this thriller educate the reader about the intriguing life-style of the group of people known as the Irish American “Travelers” (tinkers in Ireland), and their cleverly scamming practices in preying on innocents. The plot is fascinating, and moves with a wonderful briskness and Sasscer Hill connects the reader with a cast of colorful characters, to say the least. This author has the talent and applies it liberally.
A mystery with a unique twist.
I love this author’s Nikki Latrelle mystery series, set against the backdrop of horse racing in Maryland (my home state) and Florida (my adopted state). So I was more than ready to read this new book, an introduction to the Irish American Travellers.
I might not have enjoyed this book quite as much if I hadn’t read some of the author’s blog posts beforehand. Having learned that the Irish American Travellers are a real-life phenomenon—a whole subculture of con artists and thieves of Irish descent, who believe in bling, big hair and arranged marriages—I was fully prepared to ride along on Quinn’s sometimes breathtaking journey to escape the grip of that heritage.
Throw in some beautiful and spirited horses, that to some degree turn out to be Quinn’s salvation, and I was totally hooked. A great first book in a new series. I am very much looking forward to the next installment!
Travels of Quinn are the first book in Sasscer Hill’s Quinn O’Neill series. The author takes readers on a thrilling ride as a young woman finds herself on the wrong side of the law after a heist that doesn’t go as planned. Quinn has been running scams with her da for a while now, but it seems that the luck of the gypsy is about to run out and the long arm of the law is going to reach out and grab her.
Travels of Quinn is the first book that I have read by Sasscer Hill and the author did a great job hooking me into the story and having me page-turn to the end. I couldn’t get enough of this book and Quinn’s story. I like that Quinn is different from her family. She gets a thrill out of accomplishing most jobs that she takes on, but the author quickly shows that this last job…Quinn has a prick of conscious. Home life isn’t that great either. The author gives me two characters that I immediately despise. They are essentially the perfect villains, but there is more than meets the eye with this book.
I’ll admit that there were some moments of where I got a bit annoyed with Quinn because she seemed too naïve despite being a con-artist/thief. You’d think that she would have shed that with the way that she had to work a scam in order to come out the winner. She has moments of seeming like a weak character, but taking a step back I saw that it was just the author’s way of making the character come to life more and be more relatable to the situation.
This story is truly fascinating and the twists that the author writes in kept me eager for more. I loved the unexpected moments, but then I was disappointed that Quinn let’s her guard down after the many red flags waving in her face. I will say this – I am looking forward to Quinn’s next story as she is determined to find her mother and get answers.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. This murder mystery thriller is a great story that will leave you craving more as Quinn finds herself in one predicament after another. The storyline is well done and hard to put down. Get ready for thrills, questions, deceptions, and murder.
