A ruthless pothunter in search of valuable artifacts ravages an ancient-Indian burial site in the beautiful LaSal Mountains of southeastern Utah. That same day, he’s found brutally murdered. Deputy Sheriff Manny Rivera suspects the killing is related to recent demonstrations and acts of lawlessness fomented by the radicalized Heritage Protection Society, an organization dedicated to the … the protection of ancient-Indian burial sites. But a subsequent sequence of deadly crimes suggests a more sinister motive, one which also threatens the deputy’s life.
The story is set in the majestic red rock canyon country that surrounds Moab, Utah.

Quick read. Makes you feel you are in the remote corner of the southwest that the book is set in.
A little wordy at times but an interesting story line.
I enjoyed this entire mystery series and learned quite a bit about the geography of the Four Corners area.
Curtain writes about the Southwest in a way that feels as though you are there his characters are vivid, people you would want to get to know. A great read
Really enjoy this series.
I love this authors books. I’d love to meet Manny. Heck I’d like to be Manny!
Let’s see, a native american law man (who at one time studied to de a shaman) who traverses the spectacularly rugged Utah quadrant of the four-corners pie. The geography and the story line is both different and entertaining but the rest presents a Hillerman sense of deja vu.
Great characters and story. Learned a bunch about the history and geology of the area, the author is a real buff, or has done a lot of research. I ordered the next book in the series within minutes of finishing
Love all the Rivera books, wish there were more. Makes me want to visit Moab again.
Really like the author.
Love the Southwest setting of this series–and Manny is the kind of guy I would love to have breakfast with at the Rim Rock.
Rich Curtin has developed a series featuring Sheriff Detective Manny Rivera in Moab, Utah.
Each book is stand alone but reading them in order will tie Returning characters.
Nine books that will keep you turning pages to find out what happens.
Love the characters and the story line. Looking forward to reading more in this series….
The Manny Rivera series always gives me a murder mystery interlaced with a tour of red rock country and some historical information on the Native Americans who inhabited the South West US before us. They books are a relaxing read without a lot of blood and guts and they give me an enjoyable few hours away from some of the other tense action books I read. I recommend these novels.
Sinister happenings in beautiful country.
I really enjoy the Manny Rivera series. The stories are interesting, and the descriptions are so vivid that you feel like you are there. No bad language or sexual situations, and I appreciate that.
I enjoyed this detective story set in rural USA
I made the mistake of not reading this one first – Ric’s writing style definitely got better after this – still good but the later ones were better
The book was good. If you like repetition in the story line, then this is the book for you. I couldn’t quite get past the character constantly “musing” over the details of the case but it showed a careful, thoughtful character. Not a bad read.
Two dimensional characters all described by height, weight, color of hair and eyes. Even the dog. Interesting plot but the mechanics of the secondary crime didnt consider deer and rodents.
