Trailer park born and raised. It’s my legacy. That’s how my mama lived. And that’s how her mama lived. It’s the life I was born into and it’s the life I swore I would leave the second I was old enough to make it out.Only legacies have a funny way of sneaking up on you. An innocent decision the night of high school graduation led to a series of complications in my plans to escape. Seven years …
Seven years later, I’ve resigned myself to this small town and the roots I’m tied to. Nothing could make me leave. And nothing could make me spill the secrets that keep me here.
Until he walks back into town with a chip on his shoulder and a stupid hunch nobody else in town has been smart enough to follow.
Levi Cole is my opposite. Born on the right side of the tracks with family money to spare, he’s the kind of black sheep that can afford to be rebellious—because his family will always pay for his mistakes. He’s also the only living heir to Cole Family Farms, after his brother Logan was killed in duty seven years ago.
He sees something in my life that he thinks he has a right to. But he’s wrong. And obnoxious. And he needs to take his stubborn good looks and that intense way he looks at me and go back to wherever it was he came from.
I know better than to trust men like him. I was born and raised in a trailer park, I know nothing good happens to girls like me—girls with trailer park lives and trailer park hearts. Especially from gorgeous, kind, pigheaded men like him.

I loved this book so much . Rachel Higginson wrote such great characters and built a story that was heartbreaking but full of hope 🙂
I really loved Ruby ,she’s a tough character but at the heart of her she’s just as scared like the rest of us (she wants to get the hell out of this small town where she feels everyone judges her for being from the wrong side of the tracks) that doesn’t end up happening after she finds herself pregnant and alone but she makes the most of it and she is a great mom ,she makes decisions about keeping the Father of her baby a secret ,i can’t say that i wouldn’t have made the same decision, she’s afraid that she might lose custody and since the Father is dead she feels like its for the best,it’s not fair but i can she where she was coming from ,she doesn’t let people in and it really affects how she deals with everything ,the one person who almost broke down her walls was Levi and Ruby did whatever she could to push him away and it worked for 7 long years but the moment he comes back it all heats up again and she isn’t able to keep her secrets or keep away from Levi ,they have this amazing connection that pulls them together and it was so awesome to read 🙂 they gave me all the feels ,the ups and downs and everything in between was great 🙂
Omg i love Levi ,he’s such a great guy and you could totally tell how he felt about Ruby when they were younger and when he comes back its ten times more obvious and Ruby of course doesn’t think he could possible be into her because they come from different worlds but in reality Ruby is just scared that Levi makes her feel things she doesn’t think she deserves,so they play games and push each other and it causes alot of issues between them and Ruby’s secret comes out and it almost ends things between them but luckily Levi isn’t gonna walk away her a 2nd time 🙂 they be from different sides of the tracks but they end up on the right side of love 🙂
I wished it was longer ,i really wanted to see more of Ruby and Levi’s future and really get to see them as a couple !
Loved Loved Loved this book ,it was so great and i enjoyed every single second of it 🙂 i can’t wait to read more by her 🙂 she writes amazing characters and great world building 🙂
I loved the story! It was a complicated situation, it seemed that there was no way Love could prevail but it did.
Levi Cole is a book boyfriend of mine for sure. Max is amazing and I really liked him. Ruby was… well. The character that made me feel the entire book. Sometimes I wanted to hug her, also I wanted to punch her but it was impossible not to enjoy the ride.
The writing and storytelling in Trailer Park Heart was exceptional. There is an element of truth running through this novel that raised it above the many hackneyed novels that deal with this “wrong side of the tracks” theme. I was expecting the usual breezy, lightweight, maudlin treatment of this subject, but this author is a native of Nebraska and knows of what she speaks, obviously. I was very impressed by the caliber of the writing and the highly engrossing narrative.
Ruby Dawson worked hard all of her young life with one aim: get out of Clark City and never return. Levi Cole has crushed on Ruby his entire life, but Ruby is having none of THAT! I alternated between laughing and then shaking my head in consternation at many of Ruby’s stubborn, misguided decisions. However, as I often say, sometimes a bad thing has to happen to make way for a good thing. One headstrong action on her part derails her entire life, forcing Ruby to stay in the town she hates so much.
The emotion and the characters in this novel seemed very real to me. This is not a “steamy” romance, although it certainly had elements of it in this story (and very beautifully done, I might add! I sniffled and “awwwwed” a time or two!) Life is messy and we don’t always get what we want: I am a big fan of realism in a novel.
I did note a few inconsistencies regarding the character of Ruby’s mother: she starts off as neglectful and horrible, allowing Ruby to go hungry at times and bringing a constant stream of men into their double wide trailer. Conversely, there is a passage in the first half of the novel, when Ruby admits that she is pregnant, where Ruby’s mother says Ruby will always have a home with her, and that having Ruby was the best thing that happened to her. We then discover that Ruby’s mother expects Ruby to pay for two-thirds of the utilities and for any babysitting her mother does, so while she is willing to give Ruby a home, she isn’t THAT supportive of Ruby. (This seemed like Ruby was having a bit of a pity-party, but I figured the author wanted to portray Ruby as being so burdened, financially strapped and overworked that she would never be able to escape the trailer park.
There was also some confusion as to whether Levi had guessed, early on in the story, who Max’s real father was, but then, later on, Levi behaves as if he is shocked and heartbroken when Ruby finally confesses the truth. I decided to overlook this potential flaw because by then the drama and emotions were running high and the story was so darned good at this point! I did not want to waste time flipping back in the novel to verify this, so I just carried on reading.
Ruby’s character slowly evolves in this story. She goes from being a guarded, chip-on-her shoulder loner to a more accepting, happier human being. There are many wonderful, quote-worthy lines in this novel. This first quote sums up the conflict very nicely:
“There was something damaged inside of me, something that wouldn’t let good things happen.
Levi and I could have happened once upon a time, but I’d been too focused on telling him no, on not letting anything slow me down from leaving this town. And so I’d sabotaged whatever good thing was between us in the worst way possible.
And even though it gave me Max, it had ruined so many other things.”
Ruby’s personal growth is gradual, but steady. You come to admire this very flawed, but strong young woman who works her heart out to give her son a better life, while making sure that he knows he is loved and wanted. In the end, she comes to realize:
“The frustrating thing was, now that I had some f*****g perspective, I could admit that leaving Clark City and moving out of the trailer park and finding a life for myself elsewhere did not necessarily guarantee happiness.
Happiness wasn’t even a goal worth pursuing. Happiness was fleeting… fickle… temporary. Happiness was a waste of time.
What I really should have been chasing was joy. Joy didn’t come and go. Joy didn’t disappear or reappear depending on my circumstances. Joy was a rock-solid foundation with which to build my life.”
I enjoyed the many philosophical passages in this novel (and the excellent writing!) The story is told from Ruby’s point of view, and her character comes across as intelligent, but defensive and headstrong, with a poor self-image. She likes to think she managed to survive the bullying and the sneering she had been subjected to all of her life, but she still does not feel worthy or deserving. When bad things happen to her she takes it in stride, because that, she figures, is her lot in life. Well, life – and Levi – ultimately prove her wrong. This was a great read, and I will definitely be checking out this author’s other novels. I give this a 4.5 out of 5, rounded up to a 5 because I was truly entertained!
This book was confusing. There were parts I enjoyed a lot and others that frustrated my to no end. I bounced between 2-4 hearts and because of that I will give it three. I wanted to enjoy this book more. The writing was very well done and entertaining to read. I loved Levi a lot. I just really struggled with Ruby. She was insanely judgemental of everyone else her whole life, while blaming them for how they judged and treated her. This got very repetitive and didn’t allow me to like her a whole lot. She starts to get better towards the end, but honestly I don’t feel like she ever really learned her lesson. Maybe a bit in the last 20-40 pages or so, but not enough to make up for how irritating I found her for the rest of the book.
I also wish I could have gotten to know more of Levi. I wonder if I would have enjoyed it more if it was a dual POV, but since it wasn’t we shall never know. One part about this book that I truly appreciated was how Levi always just knew Ruby. She could lie to everyone else, including herself, and yet he knew the truth every time. There is something magical about that. I will say the one thing I did like about Ruby was that she was a good mom to Max and trying to do what she felt was right (even if part of it was due to fear, which I do understand).
Really enjoyed this one! Ticked off a lot of my single parent/secret baby trope needs.
I didn’t expect to love this book as much as I did. For anyone who loves a good underdog heroine and a hero you actuallly want to root for <3
Love all of her books!
I loved Trailer Park Heart. I loved Ruby. She pulled at my heart strings. She grew up in a trailer park and had big dreams to get out of town once she graduated from high school. Plans change for her and she doesn’t go to college. She has a secret that she keeps from everyone. Levi and Ruby are opposites. He left after high school and seven years later he returns. He’s very likable guy. Ruby and him have heat together but she also turns to not like him. With him back in town the secret she’s has kept starts to unravel. I really liked this one and it pulled me in the beginning.
It’s been a really long time since I’ve read a book by Rachel Higginson. I’m not sure why, because she has a great ability to cultivate a story. Trailer Park Heart was just what I needed right now.
Ruby grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. She was always picked on by the other kids, and she was bound and determined to make something of her life. Her rivalry with Levi was the motivation she needed. Unfortunately, events from a graduation party prevent her from leaving, so she’s stuck in the same town now, working a job that pays the bills, but doesn’t allow for much saving, still living in the trailer with her mother, while trying to raise her son all on her own. That is, until Levi comes back to town. Their friendly rivalry is still there, but they decide to be friends. But Ruby isn’t sure that this is for the best.
I really enjoyed Trailer Park Heart. I enjoyed the characters and felt the connection between Levi and Ruby. It did take a while to get into the story, though, and I felt like the ending could have had more to it. I will definitely reread this book, though! And will certainly be on the lookout for more from Rachel Higginson!
A different and very pleasing small town story. The usual love stories I’ve read lately involve a couple who meet, are attracted to each other, and very soon start sleeping together. Then they start falling in love. Not this book! In this one, we get to enjoy reading about Ruby and Levi being enemies during high school, being apart for seven years to meet again, and continue the bickering!
As usual, on graduation night, high school girls look to score with the boy they like. In this instance, Ruby is looking to score with Logan, but finds his younger brother instead, Levi. After one scorching kiss, and he remembers he has a girlfriend, Ruby finally finds Logan, she scores, and leaves the party. Levi calls repeatedly but she never answers, Logan leaves for the Marines and is killed in action. Finally Levi leaves for University and stays away from town for seven years.
Ruby has always felt something for Levi but doesn’t know what. He’s always teasing her, making fun of her, subjecting her to pranks, and she hates him. You could say they are frenemies because Levi does have moments of kindness. Like clueless little boys, his pranks meant that he likes her but equally clueless Ruby, she never caught on. She’s always had a one-track mind, focused sorely on leaving town and never coming back. She’s always lived in a trailer park, on the wrong side of town, her mother is the manager of a strip club, and she’s always been subjected to the gossip and scorn of the uppity people in town. However, after the fateful graduation night party, she can’t leave and makes a life in the town she swore to leave.
Seven years later, Levi comes back to town and Ruby’s peaceful existence comes to an end. They go back to bickering and feeling strange tingles whenever they touch. Ruby has been so conditioned into the position of the girl from the wrong side of the tracks that she sees scorn and rejection everywhere so she doesn’t see Levi’s actions for what they truly are, a man who wants something serious with her. The problem is that she has a secret that when revealed, it will tear apart her world and Levi’s family.
I totally loved this book, because of the delayed gratification that gave us so many pages of scorching chemistry and extended foreplay. My heart hurt for Levi because he was repeatedly rejected by clueless Ruby and it hurt for Ruby because she didn’t receive a lot of affection in her life, and she didn’t recognize affection and love from the man she wanted. There were many miscommunications as this couple stumbled on the way to love and the huge secret reveal didn’t help matter at all.
It was a thrilling and delicious story and I totally loved it and the characters too. What I loved the most is how coherent the whole story was, and the steady pace that didn’t lag. This is a new author to me, and I will be sure to search out more books by her.
I loved this book so much! Rachel wrote these characters in a way that made me feel and connect with them. This book tugged so hard on my heart strings and I fell in love with this story!

~~ 3.5 HEARTWARMING STARS!!~~
“You can’t hide from me, Ruby. I see you.”
There’s just something about small-town rich boy/poor girl romances that are so utterly intoxicating, and TRAILER PARK HEART sure hit my sweet spot!
THE STORY:
In the prologue we meet Ruby Dawson, a dirt poor trailer park girl who crosses paths with her childhood nemesis, Levi Cole, at a big blowout graduation party. Although the cocky, entitled rich boy with that devil may care attitude and irresistibly sexy smirk may be every girl’s fantasy, he irritates her to no one no end. Well, mostly. But despite the flicker of attraction that’s always kinda sparked between Ruby and Levi, she harbors a secret crush on his older brother, Logan, the nicer of the two and a bonanza fide war hero.
“I’d fallen for Logan, so I could continue hating Levi.”
However, Ruby is a realist. She knows Logan’s way out of her league…and the mutual “hatred” between her and Logan’s infuriating younger brother is one of her incentives for getting the heck out of Clark City. But more than that, she’s sick to death of being treated like trailer trash by the rich, snobby townsfolk and plans to leave Clark City behind forever and attend college far, far away. However, in the meantime, this sassy, straight laced good girl has a few things to cross off her bucket list, including getting a little wild and crazy…and losing her v-card. She sets set her sights on Logan to do the horizontal deed with…but one soul-shattering, world-rocking kiss with the “WRONG” brother leads to a reckless decision that forever derails her dreams!
Fast forward to present day. Levi is the only living heir to the Cole Family Farms after Logan was tragically killed by enemy fire seven years earlier. The “prodigal son” has been summoned home from parts unknown to assume his rightful place in the family business…and this broody bad boy ain’t exactly happy about it. Then he’s in for the shock of his life when he runs into “Little Ruby Dawson” waiting tables at Rosie’s Diner. She’s the last girl in the world he expected to have stuck around town. Now as they come to loggerheads just like old times, pent up passion ignites between these sworn enemies. But a powder keg of a secret is revealed that could topple both their worlds!
MY MUSINGS:
TRAILER PARK HEART by Rachel Higginson definitely satiated my lust for a star crossed enemies to lovers tale that I could sink my teeth into!
I loved the author’s engaging, breezy, down home writing style which immediately transported me to the gossipy, small farming community of Clark City. A town of 1500 that’s filled with the haves and the have nots. And at the epicenter were the Cole brothers, Levi and Logan, the beloved golden boys from the town’s most prominent family. “High school superstars and heirs to the largest agricultural conglomerate in all of Nebraska, Cole Family Farms, they were legends in this little town.” Until Logan’s tragic death, which even seven years later, still reverberates throughout Clark City. His demise has had a profound impact on not only Levi’s life but on Ruby’s as well, and plays a pivotal role in the unfolding romance.
Speaking of romance, I was 100 percent invested in this COMBUSTIBLE COUPLING!! There’s so much tumultuous history between these arch nemeses turned love-smitten soulmates, and Levi and Ruby just SMOLDERED together. I really relished the slow burning buildup between this fiery duo—the quick witted banter, the goading and the taunts, the blistering touches and toe curling kisses… And when they finally surrender to their pent up lust? It’s SPELLBINDING!
As far as BBF’S go, sigh Levi was a total dreamboat! He was just so dashingly handsome and roguishly charming, not only exuding raw animal magnetism and potent sex appeal, but he also possessed an achingly tender, gentle hearted chivalry that took my breath away!
He was perfect match for scrappy spitfire, Ruby, who met him toe to toe! Raised as the “pathetically poor daughter of the strip club madam,” she feels like she’s been judged and discriminated against by this town her whole life. And even though her dreams of escaping Clark City never came to pass, this impossibly stubborn, former good girl turn “town pariah” pulled herself up from her bootstraps, held her head high and refused to let the scornful, small minded townsfolk get the better of her.
Despite her bad rep, she finds a surprising champion in Levi, the drop dead gorgeous man she loves to hate. But of course just when this embattled duo finally wave the wide flag and surrender to their true feelings, shocking secrets are unveiled that reignites their war of hearts!
Overall, I truly enjoyed TRAILER PARK HEART. However, I struggled with some things that led to my rating. First, from the blurb I was expecting an angsty, uber “feely” read, but although there were definitely some heart tugging moments, this story just did not PUNCH ME IN THE GUT to the extent that I expected. Secondly I found the pacing to be a bit slow at times and found myself skimming in parts.
Also while I absolutely ADORED Levi, it took A LONG TIME for Ruby to grow on me. Her prickly attitude and headstrong nature grated on my nerves, and I just wanted her to get past her hang-ups faster and stop putting so many dang walls around her heart! But I did eventually jump on the #TeamRuby bandwagon once she finally saw the Levi light!
And, finally, while I enjoyed the fiery battle of wills and simmering tension between the MCs, I felt that the resolution was a bit abrupt. The H&h spent so much of the book spatting and fighting their feelings that I really wanted to savor more happy time with them as an ACTUAL COUPLE before the final curtain fell. But in any event, the book still ended on a high note, with a swoony epilogue, which of course made me giddy with delight!
BOTTOM LINE:
TRAILER PARK HEART, a sweet, fetching small town romance about discovering your rightful place in the world and realizing that home truly is where the heart is, left me all aglow! I look forward to more books from the talented Ms. Higginson!
Trailer Park Heart by Rachel Higginson
5+++
OMG!! This is a marvelous epic story!! Trailer Park Heart is my very first book I have read by this author and it definitely won’t be my last!! Had me intrigued from start to finish!! Well developed!!
“I have lived my whole life in a trailer park on the wrong side of the tracks. And maybe that was my life story, but it wasn’t the story of my heart.”
Just Wow!
This book is so much more than an enemies to lovers tale.
Ruby is determined to do her best and leave her Trailer Park life and this town behind when she graduates. Now with it all in sight and just 3 months left she decides its time to full fill her little bucket list and one item in particular – Losing her Virginity.
Logan and Levi Cole have always been a major part of her life, the boys from one of the richest families. Levi being the bane of her school days and always torturing her. Logan always kind and friendly.
An event at a party leads her to a life altering place and everything changes.
Now 7 years later, she’s still living with her heartless mum and Levi Cole returns to town. It just can’t get worse than this and now there are secrets that Ruby can’t risk having exposed !!!
I couldn’t set this book down, its so much more than a hot steamy romance, Hell yes Levi Cole will own your heart !! but this book takes you heart and owns you right from beginning to end. From the judgements of small towns, to realising that you are worth so much more. That you are enough!! I LOVED both these characters, Ruby was young yet she had such fire, and heart . Levi is a man that knows what he wants, and definitely leaves you in a puddle of goo !!! Their story is one that hits your emotions in all directions, from laughing to crying, and from being anxious to joy!! So many things i want to say about this book but its a book you just have to pick up and dive into, because once you do, you won’t want it to end !!!
I tell ya… these beautiful covers get me in trouble every time!! I can’t see one without wanting it and that includes the moment I saw Trailer Park Heart by Rachel Higginson. It helps that I’ve read several other Rachel Higginson books, so I know what I’m getting into. Ms. Higginson always writes an extremely unique story with fantastic characters and a well-paced plot. Not to mention a well-written story.
I enjoyed the heck out of Ruby’s journey with her young son, Max. I’ve really been obsessed with single parent stories lately. And Trailer Park Heart really gives us a strong woman who is there for her child. I love the way this book read more as a woman’s fiction with romance added to it. It kind of broke down that myth that women need a man to be happy, to be complete. The man you choose in your life should add to it. He shouldn’t be for reason for life, he should enhance what you are you, especially when you’re a single parent. I think that was really my favorite part of this book.
Ruby’s life has always been about protecting Max. It’s never been about her, which is fine when you have children, but you should still show your children how to live life. When Levi comes in to the story, Ruby learns to live again. Watching them is completely heartwarming and sweet. There’s trials and secrets hidden along the way but those all make this journey special. This is a fantastic, empowering story.
I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that… my opinions.
I was sucked in from the very beginning of this book. I did NOT want to put it down! I was lost in Ruby’s story. She wasn’t raised on the “right” side of town and growing up was harder for her due to where her mom worked but she made the best of things. Life hadn’t gone exactly to plan, but she had a full-time job, a roof over her head and love in her life. I enjoyed the banter between Levi and Ruby, first their love/hate feud in high school and now that he’s back in town. Things don’t feel right between them if they aren’t picking on each other and trying to have the last say. Levi sees things that most people in Ruby’s life miss. He’s good for her, but she’s stubborn. I really enjoyed the way this story was told and the ways in which Levi breaks through Ruby’s walls. I also liked how the reader knows Ruby’s secret and I felt like I was in Ruby’s shoes, waiting on that other shoe to fall. I can’t recommend this book enough! Grab your copy now!
This boook!!!! Rachel has become a drop everything author for me. And you’re going to want to run, not walk when this hits your bookshelf. Run to the nearest cozy spot; your favorite chair, your couch, the bed, your car at lunch hidden in the back of the parking lot!! Whatever the case may be, get comfortable and be ready to read it in one sitting!
This story pulls at your heartstrings and makes you laugh and feel for all of the people in this little town! I’m seriously considering packing up and moving right this minute! The quirkiness and genuine love of these side characters comes through in every word. Even if sometimes our main character, Ruby has trouble seeing the intentions, you feel it!
This sweet and soulful story just made me smile for 6 hours straight! And maybe even get a little sniffles….those dang allergies *wink*wink*
Rachel never disappoints and I’m so thrilled to say the streak continues!!!
You guys! I read the blurb to Trailer Park Heart and just knew I had to meet Ruby and Levi. An enemies-to-lovers romance is one of my favorite types of reads and I couldn’t wait to dive in!
I was immediately drawn into the crazy dynamic between Ruby and Cole. That their differences and their similarities were what both attracted and repelled them to each other.
Ruby and her upbringing were a huge hurdle for her to overcome. She had to fight for everything she did and had because of where she lived and her family life. She wanted nothing more than to leave her small minded town behind and have a fresh start. But life has a way of screwing with the best laid plans.
And Levi. His life of privilege didn’t necessarily lead to a life of happiness. He’s been away from home, away from their small town for years, and while a whole lot has changed, some things haven’t. Like his attraction to Ruby. And their undeniable spark. He just needs to get her to realize it too.
Oh, Ruby and Levi. There were so many times I wanted to hug you both and at the same time lock you in a room together to get yourselves sorted out. I truly did enjoy their building romance—that things aren’t necessarily what are seen on the surface, but that sometimes there’s a need to dig deeper, to look beyond the perceived bias to see the truth of the situation. I totally bought into Ruby and Levi falling in love and staying in love.
But I had issues with some of the story lines that built up their pasts, and predicated their future. There were some accountability things I’d like have had cleared up between Ruby and her mother. Between Levi and his parents too. Because there were some incredibly emotional parts that would have greatly benefited me as a reader to see resolved and fixed and really see the healing happen.
A fantastic read about making mistakes, the blessings they become and opening up your eyes instead of boxing yourself in a life your mind has created. I absolutely loved Levi, he is definitely swoon worthy! Ruby is very strong willed but dragged down by circumstance. I enjoyed watching her overcome her insecurities and finally accept what others see. Their chemistry and connection are so strong. Devoured this and I highly recommend this read.
As usual author Rachel Higginson took my heart, held it and squeezed. This story is heart warming, heart wrenching, heart breaking and so addicting. Ruby has plans for a life that is more than what she has. She is going to get out of the trailer park. She is going to leave town and go to college. Then she has one night after high graduation where she puts caution to the wind and takes a chance. That decision changes her plans. Now years later she is still in the town, still in the trailer park, still working as a waitress and now a single mother to a little boy. She has accepted her fate. Then Levi Cole comes back into town. The man who she thinks was her enemy her whole life. But soon she learns all the things she thought she knew were wrong. She has secrets of her own. As things come to light the life she accepted might not be the life she has to live.
You don’t get any real details from me. This book is worth the read from start to end. There are so many twist and turns I was surprised so many times. This story will grip you and pull you in. I couldn’t tell who I loved more: Ruby who is strong and a great example of a role model mother and female or Levi who has the bad boy but secretly sweet man thing going for him. These two together were electrifying. Their connection was so real. And their banter, hilarious!
I highly suggest this book. It’s not just a funny, romantic and feel good story. It’s also an empowering story that shows you don’t have to accept the things that happen in your life. You can still get your happiness no matter the past mistakes.
