What a good book! Emotional all the way through, but a good story. I was so happy to see Paige and Kaine get their happily ever after. They had so much to overcome to find their way to that happiness.
Tragic is the third book in the amazing Lark Cove series by Devney Perry. It can be read as standalone but I do recommend reading the previous books. Each of them is full of heart, emotions, heat, and fun. Kaine is a new character to the series but I did meet Piper in Tattered as Logan’s assistant. This is their story and it’s a rollercoaster.
Piper is the newest resident of Lark Cove, Montana. After her divorce was finally settled after two years she is ready to move on. So she made the move to be closer to Logan and some peace and quiet. Something she never would get in New York City. She buys a house on the mountain surrounded by a forest. Her only neighbor is a grouchy man who piqued her interest the minute she saw him. He was not only hot as hell but he looked pained. She wanted to see him smile. She also wanted to lick him from head to toe when she had finally gotten a good look at him. She didn’t want a relationship but a fling wouldn’t hurt. He seemed like just the guy who didn’t wouldn’t mind just that.
Kaine moved to the mountain three years ago. He wanted the solitude and on this mountain he got just that until she showed up. The woman who had a crew from sun up to sundown renovating her new home. He only saw her once but that was enough to know he needed to stay on his side of the line. That was until he had enough and after he saw her again, he was totally fucked. He wanted her. She somehow made him feel when he had been numb for years. Probably more than ever.
Kaine and Piper’s relationship is complicated. They weren’t looking for even a casual fling but that is where they are. Friends even. They both have pasts they don’t want to talk about. And they didn’t. But what will happen when their pasts collide with Thier futures?
I loved this story! It’s was poetic, tragic, sexy, and emotional. I fell for the characters. Hard. Kaine is a tortured soul. Piper has a beautiful soul. Together, they have to learn to trust, love, and feel. They also need to eat and they do. But, for real, I loved them. I felt for both of them. I wanted to give them big hugs. To be their friends.
Overall… it is the perfect addition to this series. The story. The characters. The passion. The loss. The find. The laughter. Everything. I loved it all. And, you get a preview of Tinsel! I can’t wait to read it. Just that cover was enough to excite me but the tease of the book…damn. I want it now.
Quotes:
A man could disappear into those eyes. He could get lost and never want to be found.
I refused to blink, not wanting to miss a moment of that rare laugh. And I vowed, then and there, to make him smile more often.
“Is there a reason why you’re standing in the baking aisle looking like a criminal in hiding?” With a quick flick, I tipped up his hat, knocking it back so I could see his eyes.
I love Devney Perry, and I love her Lark Cove series. Tragic is another addition to the phenomenal saga of Lark Cove, and I was deeply moved by Piper and Kaine’s pasts, as well as how the worked to overcome what they’d been through and found true hope and healing when they least expected it.
Piper was strong, with one notable exception, her ex-husband. I’m not sure how he commanded the kind of control he did over her for most of the book – and the entirety of their relationship – but it was so unlike the Piper we came to know in Tragic, I can only assume there was some serious gaslighting going on from him. Watching her finally shed the chains he’d tied himself to her with was such a relief. In every other part of her life, she proved she was strong and smart, and it was good to see her finally demonstrate those same things with him.
Kaine was heartbreaking. His past. His present. The pain he wore like a cloak. He was so bitter and reactive when the story first began, it was supremely obvious something had cut him deeply, and instead of caring for that wound he let it get infected and fester, and the toxins from it were affecting the whole of him. Piper helped him find that wound and did her best to relieve the pressure and heal it from the outside, but the true work needed to be done from the inside, and only Kaine could do that. As Kaine slowly, but surely, began to peel away the gangrenous layers of his wound and began to heal the change in him was beautiful. I was completely in awe of his healing journey, and how wholly he committed to overcoming the things, he’d allowed to traumatize him for years.
Tragic was far less suspenseful than Tattered, wasn’t as angsty as Timid, but the emotions it evoked made the story just as – if not more – powerful than either of its predecessors. Tragic focused completely on both Piper and Kaine healing from their respective pasts and learning how to love and trust again. Their journeys weren’t easy, nor were they without potholes, but the love they found and the hope they learned to hold on to was worth every second of the pain they experienced as they opened old wounds to restitch them and let them heal properly.
Tragic is the third book in Devney Perry’s Lark Cove series. Each book is a standalone, and they do not need to be read in order or completion to get a complete story – there are no continuing storylines throughout the series. Tragic is written in dual first-person perspective, narrated by Piper and Kaine.
I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving my review. I loved this book. It was sad, funny and unpredictable. I enjoyed every last page of it. Devney Perry is an amazing author and I can’t wait to read more from her.
Kaine Reynolds chose his property because of the solitude it offers, he is a man who likes his peace and quiet and his little hidden away cabin gives him just that. That is until, the house neighboring his property is sold to a city girl who has no idea what quiet means. The day she moves in the noise and distractions start, and it completely disrupts his life, in more ways than one. She is gorgeous and a distraction he does not need in his life right now, but his head and heart seem to be conflicting on that little tidbit.
This beautifully crafted story brings two wounded souls together at a time when they both think they need solitude, but what they really need is a little companionship and someone to bring them out of the darkness they have fallen into. Both have pasts haunting them, that they are trying to outrun, but what they really needed to do was face them head on, and with the support of one another they begin to do that. This is a slow burn romance, it is evident that these two have chemistry, but the hurt they are carrying around causes them to shy away from one another, and fight the sparks at every turn. Which means lots of angst! This was a tragic, affecting, and deeply felt addition to the Lark Cove series, one that I am certain is going to linger with me for a while. If you haven’t made a visit to this series yet, I highly recommend that you remedy that, each story will not only bring on a serious case of the feels, but also introduce you to some truly amazing characters that will leave an imprint on your heart!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.
Tragic Lark Cove Series Devney Perry
This series has grabbed me by the heart and won’t let go! Two people trying to get over their heartache, each in their own way. Kaine has become silent, threatening and angry. Piper just wants to start over.
This is the third book in the Lark Cove Series, and it is an emotional rollercoaster. Kaine Reynolds lives on a mountainside doing his best to keep the world out. He has his cabin, his workshop and enjoys his life of solitude and hard work. Until this whirlwind of a woman, perky enough to make his teeth hurt invades his peace and is moving in next door. Piper moved from New York to get away from the humiliation of a divorce that nearly broke her. She is intrigued by this mountain of a man, who is surly, not the least bit neighborly, but she sees the pain in his eyes. They are drawn to each other like magnets, both reluctant to let go.
In all this pain and sadness, Ms. Devney is able to add humor here and there to make this book even more enjoyable. If you have not read the Lark Cove Series, go out and grab it. You won’t regret it!

I really enjoyed this book. I was so looking forward to Piper’s story. Mix it together with Kaine, their two different pasts, the people who they turned out to be and of course my favorite- Lark Cove as the setting and I got a book I couldn’t put down. I think Tragic has moved to my favorite of this series!
I have no idea how to even start this review. Everything I want to start with doesn’t seem to express properly how Beautiful this book is.
I shouldn’t be surprised about my emotions because we are talking about a Devney Perry Book, ofcos it’s gonna leave me Speechless….
This book is about Piper. We met in Tattered as Logan’s Assistant. Really she is as close as family. How could she not be? I really adored and was so thrilled when she got her own book.
Esp since we know she had been through a shitty divorce.
Kaine Oh My Lord this man my Heart shattered for him. Just from the Prologue I knew instantly that this Title fitted this story perfectly. This broken, isolated, amazing man faced things no one should ever. I understood clearly why he was so close off.
That is until Piper started breaking down his walls. She shatters those glass walls he had around his heart. Watching these two tell their stories, watching them heal and fall in love was utterly magical. It was Gut wrenching and soul crushing. Then it was all healing and Beautiful.
Their chemistry, understanding of each other. The ball they both needed. Their relationship everything was just perfect. These two were mature and completely meant for each other. They aren’t living until they meet.
This story will make your Soul Sigh with Happiness. It has twists and heart shattering truths but also shows the power of time healing all wounds.
Kaine and Piper are hands down my favourite characters written by Devney. These two’s story is unique and heartwarming. This book deserves to Top FIVE READS FOR 2018…
Grab it now ladies and be prepared for the most incredible journey.
Enjoy!!!!

As a reader, it’s easy to fall for the gruff and broken hero…there’s something intriguing about a man who isolates himself from his past but more importantly his present, resolved to live out his days by himself in solitude, and Denver Perry’s newest hero, Kaine Reynolds, embodies those characteristics well, and even though readers aren’t privy to exactly what happened to Kaine before he made his way to Lark Cove, it’s clear that this is the life he deliberately chose for himself and he doesn’t plan on changing it, regardless of how appealing and/or excessively frustrating Piper Campbell, his new neighbor, is.
I have to admit…at first, I wanted to know everything there was to know about what made Kaine the mercurial man readers see in Tragic. Based on the title alone, it’s obvious that something beyond devastating happened to him, forcing him to find solace in the quiet and solitary life he has. But Denver Perry doesn’t reveal the required facts or insights in one lump sum…they’re revealed throughout the duration of this book, almost like that as things get more complicated…more involved between him and Piper, the demons he worked so hard to stifle rise to the forefront again, causing emotional and physical torment and fear, indicating that if anything of substance is to be created between him and the woman he can’t seem to get out of his head then they’re both going to need to know what they’re up against and with that knowledge, I was able to allow the reality of Kaine’s circumstances to be unloaded as both Perry and Kaine saw fit.
Piper has her own past to deal with, and even though it seems not as overwhelming as Kaine’s is, her feelings of inadequacy…her struggle to understand that she’s blameless in what occurred don’t come easy to her, but that doesn’t mean that she wants to become a recluse like her surly new neighbor, and it’s Piper’s feisty nature that allows her to deal with Kaine like only she can, illustrating that the connection between them – one that I don’t think either of them was prepared for – has to overcome quite a few obstacles as well as mental scarring in order to let go of their troubled pasts and move forward in a way that will allow both Kaine and Piper to learn how to trust again…find a way to heal the fractured parts of themselves, recognizing that they can’t keep allowing the past to encroach on their present any longer than it already has.
It’s awfully lonely in the darkness with nothing but the ghosts of one’s past to keep him company, but sometimes, that’s all that’s left of someone when his life has been upended in ways that hang like an albatross around his neck and it’s not until someone who’s willing to fight through his shadows and bring him into the light that he finds the present worth living in a way that that’s more than merely existing, and Piper Campbell seems to be that person for Kaine and as long as they can both endure their personal struggles as they work on themselves and try to figure out what they truly mean to one another then what was once tragic has the ability, at some point, to become less about loss and more about forgiveness and living a joyous life.
It’s clear that Devney Perry pours her heart and her soul into her emotional romances. It’s almost like her hero and heroine demand that she craft their story in a way that truly captures everything they’ve experienced: everything they’ve lost…they’ve grieved…they’ve succumbed to, and by doing so, Perry allows her readers to understand just how layered the characters are and how their personalties, their flaws, and the personas they seem to wear are all due to something significant…something life altering…something tragic. But there’s always hope…in every single story Perry writes, there’s always possibilities and that’s what keeps me reading…keeps me from becoming overwhelmed by the tears and the pain and the loss…it’s why Devney Perry is one of my favorite romance writers.
5+ Poison Apples
Can you survive from a tragedy? When you had lost someone that you loved so much.. It was a very hard step to grasp the reality of not seeing them.
Tragic was a story between two lost souls. Kaine and Piper had to go on with their life with living in a small town. A magical town which can heal you without realizing it.
I had a lot of heavy heart with Tragic. The plot was surreal.. I meant really..Pain, anger.. guilt.. bitterness. The story had touched my hearts…the story on how to move on.. to pick up yourself from falling apart..
The Author had written Tragic with sophisticated emotions.. it was raw and painful..
Most of the time when I read a book is like: I loved it, I liked it or meh!
But when a book hits you so hard you need to look out for the perfect words to describe it and make others fall in love with it even before they read it.
That’s what happens to me with Devney’s books, but Tragic became extra special.
This book is full of heartache, angst, funny, sexy moments and more.
If you read the excerpt in Timid, maybe you, like me, were anxious for a while to read it.
After a tragic lost for Kaine, he isolates himself in the mountains until a new neighbor knocks on his door.
Pipper is done with the city life and everything that comes with it, so when her boss proposes to her to keep working with him in Montana, she takes the opportunity that will change her life.
Kaine and Pipper both lost (almost) the same thing, in a different way but just the same. They are perfect to heal each other. For one will take more time but they have what they need to achieve it: each other.
“The inch between us was filled with hate, our mutual annoyance and frustration a tangible wall between us. “
I had to stop reading a few times 1. To enjoy and feel every feeling of them and 2. To try to make it longer, I didn’t want it to end but I was desperate to know what life will bring to both of them.
Kaine and Pipper’s attraction was instant but their hearts weren’t ready for this kind of chemistry and little by little they were accepting themselves and their lost to finally look out for a future together.
Right now my heart is full with this beautiful story and I thank Devney for sharing it with the world.
“I was falling in love with a grouchy, tormented neighbor. I was falling in love with a man who was sweet and kind. I was falling in love with a man who had a little magic of his own. “
“I can’t feel anything,” Kaine’s eyes held mine. “But I can feel you.”
So, it’s been a while since I’ve been able to write a review. Life hasn’t been much different than normal, but it seems that I have. In whatever abnormality of self came over me, reading was the thing that suffered. When I first began reading Tragic, I wasn’t sure that I was going to make it through. Not because of the story (I ADORE Devney’s writing), but because of me and my funk. So, I put the story down and came back to it a bit later, and I am SO GLAD I DID.
Piper and Kaine weave a story that is as beautiful as it was messy. Their pasts weren’t pleasant, each for different reasons, but these pasts were interfering with their future. The most positive aspect of this interference was the fact that it pushed both of them to Lark Cove!
I felt a lot while reading. I laughed, glimpsed a bit of Thea/Logan and Willa/Jackson’s futures, cried (just a little), winced in embarrassment, but overall I was completely devoted to the outcome of their story. My admiration for Piper never wavered. Although she wasn’t moving mountains or anything huge, she is one of the strongest women I’ve read in a while. She doesn’t push, but she stands her ground and keeps moving forward no matter what. Sometimes it’s the quiet strength that proves to be the most lasting.
I really enjoyed my time back in Lark Cove. I felt like I got to catch up with old friends, while making new ones! Let’s just say, I can’t wait for what comes next.
And just like that, Devney Perry and her beautifully flawed characters and compelling storytelling won over my heart yet again.
Hot dog, you guys. Ms. Perry knows how to dish up emotion in a way that I feel at a nearly bone deep level without every feeling like my feelings have been manipulated or that she’s gone over-the-top on me. This story sometimes hurt to read, but I couldn’t put it down and I loved every minute of it.
I have a soft spot for grumpy heroes. I adore strong heroines. So the mixture of Kaine and Piper was just perfect for me. They’re essentially opposites, but that only added to their chemistry for me. And, oof, their chemistry, y’all. It sparked and smoked and flared over the course of this entire story. It’s definitely a slow burn, but it burned just right for me. My heart did all kinds of acrobatics for them: aching, flipping, soaring, and beating double time over the course of their love story.
Tragic was simply beautiful. Tender. Touching. Sweet. Sometimes brutal. It was an experience, and one I am glad to have had the opportunity to feel. This book was FANTASTIC, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Dear lord, from the opening words of Tragic, I knew I would fall in love with the beautifully broken Kaine Reynolds. That he somehow managed to live through such a heartbreaking tragedy. That he didn’t want to think. That he didn’t want to feel. That he wanted nothing more to be left alone. That he didn’t know what to do when his “new neighbor” showed up. All those that’s are what totally endeared Kaine to me.
And Piper. Jeez, she’s a force to be reckoned with! I love a strong, independent woman—one who’s not afraid to speak her mind, but also one who’s loving, honest and real. And that’s exactly who Piper is.
And Kaine and Piper together is something magical. Something healing. Something wonderful. Something they both need desperately to be able to get through their hurt and anger and look toward the future.
And their romance is not an easy one. Their pasts come back to haunt them in the most incredible, potentially tragic of ways. But somehow, someway—with lots of love, hope and forgiveness—they find their way. And there’s nothing Tragic about their happily ever after.
Do you love gruff men? Men that are hard on the outside but once you dig deeper, you can find the softer side? Yes? Then you will love this book! Actually this whole series and all of Devney Perry’s books. Do you like strong heroines? Well then this is definitely for you. Piper is strong yet sweet and I love that in female characters. No doormats here! You will quickly get sucked into this story. Lark Cove neighbors Kaine and Piper have undeniable chemistry yet try to fight it because Kaine just wants to be left alone. Another amazing story from Ms Perry!
Tragic is the third book in Devney Perry’s Lark Cove series and without a doubt my favorite. It might even be my favorite book of 2018. I’m a huge fan of second chance stories but this isn’t a second chance at romance story, it’s a second chance at Life story.
Like Kaine says “I needed some magic” and Devney definitely give us magic with this book. Piper and Kaine desperately need each other and their story is so tragic it’s beautiful. Both have suffered loss and deceit. One needs healing and the other needs a fresh start. I always look forward to new books by this author. She owns her craft. Her characters are so enduring and her stories are believable.
Tragic is tragically beautiful in all the best ways. Five stars…I’d give it ten if I could!!!
Her magic brought him out of the dark…
I have a confession to make…I don’t know how to be and act around people who have faced tragedy. I don’t think I’m alone with not knowing what to do or say. What are the right words to show you care? How soon is too soon to try and make them smile? Do I hug them…what if they’re not into hugs? See, I’m bad. All these things flow through my mind when I’m face to face with someone who is facing or has faced devastation. I think, therefore, I was a little overwhelmed and in awe of Piper. Her first glimpse of Kaine is when he is at his darkest, most vulnerable and tragic place. Did she want to run? No, she was pulled towards him. She wanted to help him. Tragic is the story about how love can turn tragic into magic.
Both Kaine and Piper have already lived and faced plenty of hurdles in their lives. They’re mature, established and comfortable in their skin. Sure, mentally they are struggling a wee bit but who can say they don’t have a few inner demons lurking? Piper is divorced from a selfish, egotistical and manipulative jerk, and Kaine is battling depression after a tragedy destroyed his family. These two are licking their wounds and trying to just live each day.
Tragic is a very emotional story that deals with loss, depression and betrayal. I never felt overwhelmed though. Sure, it made me sad and I felt helpless that the characters suffered so much, but I knew, together, they could make it. Piper never shied away from Kaine’s grief or frustration and was always ready to help and support him. Kaine took control when it was needed and made sure that Piper’s ex knew when he’d gone too far. They may not have started their relationship with love on their mind, but the connection grew stronger and their feelings couldn’t be denied.
As we progress through Tragic, more of Kaine’s past comes to light. I was so very angry on his behalf and I wanted him to turn his back on those who had betrayed him. When he starts finding happiness with Piper, he starts to forgive…and I got a little cranky. How could he forgive them? I’m not sure I have it in me to forgive this unforgivable thing. Then, I realised, I’ve only had hours to deal with the betrayal (while reading) and Kaine’s lived with it and breathed it for 3 years. Yep, I can see you’re all shaking your head at the “crazy” book reader who takes the unreal way too realistically. What was a blink of an eye for me to suffer (yes, I’m only the reader, but I do suffer), was 3 whole years of solitary, miserable grief for Kaine. Luckily, Kaine’s a better person than me and managed to move on to bigger and better things.
There’s something about the way that Devney Perry manages to make such a tragic story inspiring, romantic and beautiful. Because I know it will be emotional, I tend to go in bracing myself for the heartbreak. I take a few knocks and a few tears will form but it’s not long before someone makes me smile, smirk or shiver in delight.
Talk about shivering in delight…HUBBA HUBBA!! Kaine certainly does have the MOVES… I was a little surprised with their first encounter but oh so very delighted too. Neither of them was thinking too much of what would happen after, but who doesn’t love a little reckless abandon now and again. Just thinking about that scene is making me smirk.
We get the pleasure of catching up with some beloved characters and meet some new ones too. This is not a series you have to read in order. Once you try, you may find that you’ll want to go back to the beginning to meet and get to know the rest of the gang better. Lark Cove is somewhere that I wish was able to visit. I want to meet the people, head to the diner for a burger and check out the bar with the bra hanging off the antlers.
This series has become one of my favourites and each instalment gets better. I’m a Devney Perry fan and if you haven’t tried her stories yet, I highly recommend starting NOW! Tragic was FANTASTIC!!
Another breathtaking addition to the Lark Cove series! Tragic will have you both ugly crying and happy sighing throughout the pages of Piper and Kaine’s magic filled story. As always, Devney Perry’s incredible writing is completely captivating in the book. Grabbing your heart from the very first page and continuing to build into one of the most beautifully emotional books I’ve ever read.
Kaine’s past is beyond devastating and his present still completely clouded in grief. Keeping himself isolated from everyone and everything for three years before Piper pretty much bulldozes her way into his life. While Piper has been dealt her own blows she’s still surrounded by wonderful friends and caring family and her bright personality still shines through it all.
These two have a love that will have you glued to every page. Their story having heartbreaking loss that only serves to make the love they share even more magnificent. Grief and healing happening side by side with romance that captures your heart.
I am absolutely in love with the Lark Cove series by D. Perry…and I can say that Tragic is my favorite one in the series yet! Not only do you meet a dark, grieving and broody hero, and a sassy and determined heroine in this story, but you also get a glimpse into favorite characters’ lives from both Tattered and Timid. I have come to know and love these people who call themselves family and friends in the small town of Lark Cove, and I just keep wanting more of them all!
This story is about Kaine Reynolds, a broken and secluded man, who has run away from his tragic past; and Piper Campbell, who came flying into town with her colorful and passionate personality. She was not intimidated by this man – at all. I loved Piper from the beginning. Her excitement about living in Lark Cove, and getting away from her own past and NYC was like watching Christmas through a child’s eyes. Her carefree attitude and quirky personality are adorable, and you can’t help but want to be just like her – smart, compassionate, thoughtful, fun-loving, silly, and gorgeous. The girl believes in magic cake for goodness sakes! I LOVE HER! She was just what Kaine Reynolds never knew he needed.
Kaine is in so much pain when you first meet him. His initial scene literally gave me goosebumps, and the draw to him was immediate. He was broken and a mystery that Piper was determined to fix. The push and pull of their relationship was surprising at every turn. They both needed SO much from each other, yet were afraid to take too much at once. As their story unfolds slowly, you see more into Kaine’s past, and watch Piper face her past head on. I love how head-strong she was, and what a calming and positive force she was for Kaine. Their chemistry was undeniable, and the magnetic attraction went beyond just the physical – these two were destined to be together. He was dark and she was light. He was fiercely loyal and protective, and it made me fall for him – HARD.
There was so much about this story that I loved – the setting, the characters, the families, Kaine’s passion for his woodwork, and both of their resilient spirits. This book will make you cry, laugh, sigh and swoon. It is passionate, emotional, and heartbreaking. After a while, you will feel like you know these characters and town so well that you have a front row stool to watch their story unravel at the Lark Cove Bar. Well done once again D. Perry! I can’t wait for the next in the series – I know it’s going to be just as fabulous!
