Kylara Vatta is the only daughter in a family full of sons, and her father’s only child to buck tradition by choosing a military career instead of joining the family business. For Ky, it’s no contest: Even running the prestigious Vatta Transport Ltd. shipping concern can’t hold a candle to shipping out as an officer aboard an interstellar cruiser. It’s adventure, not commerce, that stirs her … soul. And despite her family’s misgivings, there can be no doubt that a Vatta in the service will prove a valuable asset. But with a single error in judgment, it all comes crumbling down.
Expelled from the Academy in disgrace — and returning home to her humiliated family, a storm of high-profile media coverage, and the gaping void of her own future — Ky is ready to face the inevitable onslaught of anger, disappointment, even pity. But soon after opportunity’s door slams shut, Ky finds herself with a ticket to ride — and a shot at redemption — as captain of a Vatta Transport ship.
It’s a simple assignment: escorting one of the Vatta fleet’s oldest ships on its final voyage… to the scrapyard. But keeping it simple has never been Ky’s style. And even though her father has provided a crew of seasoned veterans to baby-sit the fledgling captain on her maiden milk run, they can’t stop Ky from turning the routine mission into a risky venture — in the name of turning a profit for Vatta Transport, of course.
By snapping up a lucrative delivery contract defaulted on by a rival company, and using part of the proceeds to upgrade her condemned vehicle, Ky aims to prove she’s got more going for her than just her family’s famous name. But business will soon have to take a backseat to bravery, when Ky’s change of plans sails her and the crew straight into the middle of a colonial war. For all her commercial savvy, it’s her military training and born-soldier’s instincts that Ky will need to call on in the face of deadly combat, dangerous mercenaries, and violent mutiny.…

The Vatta series is great as a whole. Not just space opera, lots of moving parts that she keeps track of
Great classic space opera. Thanks, Norman for recommending it to me 😀
A really great sci-fi adventure. Lots of danger and intrigue and a heroine thrown into the deep end. Maybe not quite as action-packed as some books, but totally worth adding to your read-now list!
Elizabeth Moon is a great, creative writer with a strong understanding of military leadership. She writes terrific stories that teach leadership skills as they entertain the reader.
Love this series!! Even though in the far, far future, I connected with the characters and their challenges !!
I read many of her books that she coauthored and discovered this series. I enjoyed other books that she co-.wrote and i was pleasantly surprised to find the style I enjoyed in them was her style. Believable yet still the future technologies that make this a sci/fi book. I love sci-fi that deals with behaviors and this one was particularly …
Elizabeth Moon is an exceptional author.
The first volume of Vetta’s War. This is a stand alone story. Given command of a freighter before she is ready for it. Kylara Vetta is challenged by unusual circumstances that force her to grow and mature as she overcomes them with the help of her experienced crew.
The author is a great at creating realistic, relatable characters.
Elizabeth Moon’s Trading In Danger is the first in an extended series. The first 5 are great…this first in the series especially so. The world building is complex but not so much that you tire and lose interest. You feel vested in the heroine in the first chapter and by the end of the 5th book you will be cheering. Rated 5 stars because I …
This is the first book of a great series. I was excited when it came on Bookbub. It is the third time I have read it and it still kept me so engaged I read it over two days, staying up too late as I wrapped up I. The story. I love the lead character and how we see her develop over the course of the story and the series. I highly recommend this …
Any book by Elizabeth Moon is a guaranteed good read. Put her on your must buy list. Her space adventures are the best as she actually has the background to understand military tactics. And does not just want to fire the maximum number of weapons.
Very much enjoyed this military space opera. Despite the lack of romance, (my go-to read), I’m still inclined to hand out 5-stars. It was action-packed and entertaining, and most importantly had a few feels to help it along.
This series is an absolute favourite of mine now.
It’s also on sale right now (July 12th, 2019)! A bargain must-read!
great series with amazing characters
I’m having a lot of fun with this series.
Moon’s story lines are always great ‘space opera.’ This is the first in a series and they are each great. My kind of sci-fi.
A fantastic read highest recommendation
A young spaceship captain faces unexpected hazards on a routine trade run. I can’t say why i enjoyed this so much but i look forward to the next book.
Wish there were more books in this story line.
The first in a five book series. I wish there were more than five. Really enjoyed the setting and the technology. the main character is very likable.
