Nicholas Sansbury Smith reboots the post-apocalyptic genre with Trackers, a carefully plotted, skillfully written, and exquisitely paced story that combines the best elements of the post-apocalyptic genre with a unique twist. From the big picture catastrophe to the daily struggle in the wake of an unthinkable attack, the author moves the story forward at an incredible and believable pace. You won’t regret starting this series.
A great genre to start reading
Estes Park police chief Marcus Colton, has a missing girl on his hands and knows there is only one person capable of finding her, and that’s tracker Sam “Raven” Spears. Raven is the best and, even though he has been in trouble with the law, Colton knows Raven will do his all to help. Raven, Colton and Raven’s dog set out to hopefully find the girl alive.
Meanwhile, Major Nathan Sardetti, is on his way to visit his nephew when he is called back to base. A plane has entered US space and the pilots are not responding. The plane is coming up as a Chinese plane. Nathan is a fighter pilot and goes up to investigate. He is not far over Estes Park when he realises something is really wrong because, for 1 thing, it doesn’t look like the plane it’s supposed to be, and for another, it’s rising steadily. Before Nathan and another pilot can do anything, there is a blast of light and the electronics and everything on board fail. Nathan has some time to eject before his plane crashes.
Nathan’s sister, Senator Charlize Montgomery wakes up to the news that there has been a nuclear bomb denoted in the atmosphere causing an EMP to happen. It’s not just in one place, there have been a few bombs detonated and things look bad. While fighting to keep the US government going, she is also trying to find her son Ty, who was at a camp near where one of the bombs detonated. She is also worried about her brother, Nathan who she knew was on the way to Ty.
After finishing this authors other series about Variants, I wasn’t too sure how he could top that. But top it he did. Now this one isn’t as action packed as the other series, but it is just as gripping and just as scary, not monster scary, but real thing that could happen scary! Especially with the tension that is happening with North Korea!!
This has so much happening in it that it is impossible to put down. We not only have an EMP attack and all the ramifications that happen with that including Nuclear fallout, but we also have, what looks like a serial killer, running loose in Estes Park!! Plus, it doesn’t look like an ordinary serial killer either, this killer seems to be trying to bring and old Cherokee legend alive. It’s a legend that frightened Raven when he was young and it’s even more terrifying now.
One thing I’ve noticed about this author is his ability to create characters that you immediately connect with. Every single one of them were well written and developed and they are characters you can easily care about. The book starts with when Raven was a soldier, he had a secret mission in North Korea and it’s stayed with him. Now that North Korea has attacked, Raven is racked with guilt that the mission he was on could have caused all this! I loved Raven, and his dog!!! I also loved Colton and how genuine he was. There are also a wider variety of characters, but those 2 were my favourite, though I’m starting to like Nathan too.
Anyway, this book is incredibly scary because it’s a threat that could happen. You can tel that the author did his research with how descriptive he is, not only with the EMP, but also the effects it has, and I particularly loved how descriptive he was with the Cherokee parts. It was fascinating!! I read this as slowly as I could because I wanted to savour it, and I have to say that I’m glad I went and bought book 2, because I seriously needed to dive straight in after finishing this one. With it’s amazing characters and it’s exceptional story telling, this is a must read!!!!
I listened to this book on Audible. Beginning Chapter 2, the narrator did an outstanding performance, which made it a lot of fun to listen to after the drab first chapter.
This book is similar in nature to Andrew Watt’s 6-series of War Planners in many ways.
The most basic similarity is that an enemy of the United States deploys an EMP. The fight for individual survival supersedes that of community. Domestic terrorists reign and there grows anxiety over when the basics, like water, electric grid, and food will be met.
I found the book interesting and engaging. I would highly recommend this book. The author performed a lot of research to make this a factually logistical book. And the chilling factor is THIS could easily happen to us.
What will we do in this situation?
The book starts off with a special ops mission to go into North Korea and rescue 2 girls who made it to the wrong side. One was a Senator’s daughter. They had a South Korean with them to help find the girls. After the girls was saved the marine in charge killed the South Korean, he said so it wouldn’t start a war with North Korea. Then in the small town of Estes Park there is a murderer on the loose who kills and then sets the person feet on fire. The first to die was a little girl Melissa, but she won’t be the last. Then the next thing that happens is aT least one EMP is st off high above the Rockies. Two fighter jets were chasing what they thought was a Chinese jet, but they had hidden what they really were an old Russian aircraft that the North Koreans use. When they set off the EMP it caused both American jet fighters power to go off and they crashed into the mountainside. Not too put later the Koreans drop a nuclear weapon on Washington, D.C.
Who will survive and is the entire country off the grid where nothing but vehicles made before computer chips survive. We really have three stories in this one book but they are tied together through different family members. I loved this book and will be reading the second one next.
Many of the post-apocalyptic stories I have read might have been good yarns, but they lacked an event that was believable enough to make the story scary – because it could happen.
This is not the case with Trackers. Nicholas Sansbury Smith tells a tale grounded in the reality of present day weapon technology and world events. His disaster event is plausible, making the story take on an edge it would otherwise lack.
Throw in a serial killer in them mist of everything else and you’ve got yourself page-turner!
I loved Smith’s Hell Divers series. I already read the first two books and pre-ordered the third one. While waiting for its release I figured I’d check out what else he had to offer and the Trackers series immediately caught my attention.
I love a good apocalyptic story. The world falls apart. People do horrific and/or courageous things to survive. Good guys do bad, bad guys do good. It’s an epic struggle to carve out a place in the new world.
What scared me the most was how real this felt. This wasn’t about zombies or a flu epidemic decimating our country. It was EMPs taking out our power grid and crippling our way of life.
Smith does an amazing job of dropping you into hell. His characters are genuine. I quickly formed some strong connections with many of them. Including one heroic dog. Even though many made some mistakes, I hung on every word, hoping they’d make it through some bad situations as things imploded.
If you’re looking for some apocalyptic and post apocalyptic stories, look no further. This author brings it.
I’ve recently finished the four book Tracker series. These are really good! The action kept me wanting to read more all the time. Fortunately I’m retired and could keep reading when I wanted to. Some parts are a little gruesome and there is some swearing which I don’t really like. If you survival type stories you will like this one. It was easy to give the whole series five stars. (I often don’t give a book 5 stars.)
Half-way through the first book. Post-apocalyptic novel that is very true to life. Smith has characters that I can identify with, the story MOVES!
The trackers series is starting out to be another great post-apocalyptic series by Nicholas Sansbury Smith. I love his Hell Divers series and want to check out the rest of his work. The trackers series is a post EMP story with a little bit of nuclear fallout. It’s more than just that though. This story is more of a murder mystery in the middle of the apocalypse. Great series so far and I’m excited to listen to the rest.
This book is so good. Once you start this series, you would not be able to stop. This a great intro to what could happen in this world. Such good characters, thrilling descriptions, and real life scenarios!! Seriously you have to read this!!!
Trackers is not the type of apocalyptic story we’re accustomed to from bestselling author Nicholas Sansbury Smith, but don’t let that sway you. This story is a first class, nail-biting suspense/horror/thriller that hits close to home.
The author’s background with Homeland Security and Emergency Management got the chance to take center stage with this shockingly plausible threat to the way of life as we know it in the United States. He has mixed a nationwide catastrophe with multiple local threats in the beautiful tourist town of Estes Park, Colorado. The result is a powerful story that will keep you reading into the wee hours of the night.
A killer is loose in the wilds of Colorado, kidnapping and mutilating a young girl. The search for the victim and killer are hampered by the loss of power and failure of all electronic devices. Tracked by Raven, a native American hunter and his well trained canine friend, the killer eludes capture as the U.S. devolves into chaos.
Well written about a totally believable scenario, the characters lead the action of this terrific tale. I highly recommend this book and can’t wait for the continuing story.
One of his best yet. Nick has brought a fresh look at the survival EMP story with not just an apocalyptic event in the US but also a horrific serial killer terrorizing the town of Estes Park in Colorado along with a separate nuclear attack on DC. This book combines these stories and brings to life the devastating after effects of an EMP while describing the beautiful Rocky Mountain scenery around Estes Park. I devoured this book, loved his diverse characters and the interacting scenarios.
Very well done Nick!
Great action-packed and real life situation
Chilling!
While some of the scenarios were a bit far fetched, this post apocalyptic series of four books was intense, possible, and bone chilling. The characters were authentic enough so the reader became very invested in their survival. The gory violence was not at all gratuitous, but nonetheless upsetting. Certainly, it is not difficult, especially in today’s environment,to believe in the inhumanity of men, but to also believe that somewhere down the line, good triumphs over evil. This book is a definite page-turner and will have you buying MRE’s for your basement cache.
I would recommend this book only if you have nothing else to read.
Excellent read highly recomended
Great read for those who like dystopian reading. I higly recommend the whole Trackers series.
A must read
