Take a trip to exotic South Florida with this dark, funny book that established Carl Hiaasen as one of the top mystery writers in the game. The first sign of trouble is a Shriner’s fez washed up on a Miami beach. The next is a suitcase containing the almost-legless body of the local chamber of commerce president found floating in a canal…The locals are desperate to keep the murders under wraps … the murders under wraps and the tourist money flowing. But it will take a reporter-turned–private eye to make sense of a caper that mixes football players, politicians, and one very hungry crocodile in this classic mystery that GQ called “one of the top ten destination reads of all time.”

Carl hiassen has the most intriguing characters of anyone. If you can really find people like this in Florida and can hangout with them, I am moving down tomorrow.
Hiaasen is always wacky fun. Great characters, twisted endings, out loud chuckles.
Great read.
I have not read a Carl Hiaason book yet, that I have not enjoyed!
Dumb
The book is an easy and light read. Characters
are in line with the story basics and add to interest. Author tells s good story.
Too far fetched
I love Hiaasen. He always make me laugh. This is good, but not his best. I read all of them long ago so don’t remember details. That’s why I read this one. Wanted to laugh and enjoy an absurd plot.
Well I read almost everything this author puts out and I’m always happy I did.
A great combination of plot and humor.
I love this writer. His characters are always funny but with an edge and his plots are always interesting. This was one was one of his earlier works so it was a walk down memory lane with some of the references.
Gory
I wasn’t thrilled with the ending, but it kept you interested. And it made me laugh out loud a number of times, which is rare in mysteries.
Not amusing as I had hoped. It is grittier/gorier/more upsetting than I prefer to read. My husband would probably like it.
I have not read a Carl Hiassen book that I didn’t love!
The hero was a surprise & turned out to be a great hero. The bad guy got to be predictable. There was some great humor, a little sex, grusom killing. It was a page Turner.
Only in south Florida are events like this NOT news. Once again, Hiaasen has captured the insanity that repels some easily offended people, but is as sweet as honey to a hummingbird for anyone who likes their humor honed to an edge.
I LOVE Carl Hiaasen’s books. I think they are amazing, funny, and great to read. Perhaps this book is disappointing only when you compare it to his other works, but I couldn’t even finish it. I didn’t care much for the characters and the pace was just off. Sadly, I cannot recommend this book. I highly recommend his other books, though!!! He is a great author!
Not my favorite hiassen. Not funny.
Funny, funny, funny…I laughed out loud
