A passionate, fast-paced story set in the untamed western frontier by an exciting new voice in historical romance.Niall MacLaren is the oldest of four brothers, and the undisputed leader of the family. .
Katherine is determined to live the life she’s dreamed about. Life is perfect for this adventurous, beautiful young woman, until an accident throws her into the arms of the one man who can destroy it all.
Fighting his growing attraction and strong desire for the beautiful stranger, Niall is more determined than ever to push emotions aside to focus on his goals of wealth and political gain. But looking into the clear, blue eyes of the woman who could ruin everything, Niall discovers he will have to harden his heart and be tougher than he’s ever been in his life…Tougher than the Rest.
Excerpt:
Kate heard her doorknob turn, and the door open. Niall stood inside her room in bare feet, dressed only in his dress pants.
His skin was darkened from the summer months of working without a shirt. His body was muscled from the heavy work a ranch required. His dark hair was tousled as if he, too, had been lying awake in bed, unable to sleep. His arms hung limp at his sides. His expressive green eyes bored into hers as she turned to face him.
Does she know that with the fire behind her, I can see right through that nightdress? It was as if she had nothing on. Even as he advanced toward her, he knew he shouldn’t have come. This was wrong in so many ways. But his body had a mind of its own and he was unable to deny it…
…Now he was in her room, half dressed, and wanting nothing more than to pick her up and take her to bed. He advanced slowly, waiting for her to make a sound, to tell him to stop, but she just watched him advance.
“I shouldn’t be here,” Niall whispered. “You belong to someone else.”
Kate said nothing, just continued to stare into those dark pools of emerald green. Niall stopped a couple of feet away.
“We don’t have a future.” His throat worked as the words came out. He wanted, needed, Kate to understand that the pull between them, if they acted on it, wouldn’t change his plans. He advanced until she was only inches away. “Tonight won’t change anything,” he rasped, the words barely discernible. “We can only have this one night.”

Pretty predictable.
Loved this story so much, I bought the 6 book series! These books will be read again in a few months!
Although well written I couldn’t stand the premise of the book that men can sleep with anyone anytime and the other women in their lives will be okay with it!! Spreads untrue and damaging ideals and although I enjoyed some of the characters I wont be reading any more by this author.
Disappointed in main male character. He was self-centered and rude. The main female character was inconsistent in her resolve.
Niall MacLaren is a widower who runs the family MacLaren ranch, has a young daughter and a few female companions. His life begins to tailspin more when he stops for a stagecoach accident and rescues the injured including Kate Garner who his family takes home till she heals from her amnesia. Niall tries to stay away from Kate but feels drawn to him despite his relationships he has with some of the town women already. He must make a decision for his future but it won’t be easy.
I did not finish this bool because I felt it was very predictable and I was not interested un the setting. My mistake in selecting it.
The sexual morals of the handsome cowboy left a bad taste in my mouth. As the young woman, knowingly about his “woman”, I wouldn’t have had anything to do with him. Curiosity, perhaps, but romantic, nada for me!!
Perhaps others can overlook it but I wasn’t made like that.
I loved this whole series!
Enjoyed reading this story.
A fun read.
To predictable, not very interesting.
I already reviewed this at least once. It is well written, interesting and at times violent as would be realistic in the old west. Filled with characters both good and evil, compassionate and just plain stupid. Sort of like any time anywhere so a person can identify with the struggle to be honest and productive against the mass selfishness and self interest.
Although I could see what some other reviewers had criticized about Niall’s character, I found it to be a realistic picture of a male during the time period presented. Loved the steamy scenes! My only criticism would be that I wish there had been more. I’ve also read books 2 and 3…so far 3 is my favorite. I’m in the middle of book 4, and I’ve liked this series enough to have already purchased books 5 & 6.
Great western theme
Loved Tougher Than The Rest! I enjoy reading about the history of our country, the bravery of the early settlers; how life was hard but people persevered. Loved the characters. I could see how Niall struggled with the choices he felt he had to make between love and the success of his ranch. Great story. Shirleen Davies, you nailed it and I look forward to reading more of your work.
Good story – and no yukky sex.
Good read
Character and storyline development was poor at best. The ending was best because it was over.
One of my favorite western romance books. Well written with lots of intrigue & tears along the way.
Great book
