In mythology, Cassandra was a princess of Troy. She had the gift of prophecy, but was cursed so that no one would believe her–a curse that led to the destruction of Troy during the Trojan War because her warnings went unheeded.
Fast-forward a couple of millennia. Cassandra “Cassie” Palmer has the gift of prophecy and is able to speak to spirits. That makes her a valuable commodity, especially for vampires. When the vampire crime boss she escaped three years before comes after her, Cassie is forced to turn to the Vampire Senate for protection. Vampires never do anything for free, however, and soon she finds herself working with the powerful and seductive master vampire Mircea–brother of Vlad the Impaler, aka Dracula himself.
As Cassie’s powers grow and her true identity is revealed and various factions attempt to capture her, she’ll need to know who she can count on, who she can trust, and who her best allies are. This fantastic series (and it’s equally awesome spinoff, which I’ll review separately) is addictive. I love Cassie and Mercia, the world Karen Chance has built, and the political intrigue and suspense of these novels. The ninth novel in the series will be out in July 2019, so it’s a perfect time to binge the Cassie Palmer series.
One of the more original story lines I have read in a very long time. A true page Turner. I couldn’t get enough of this book. I kept into the next and the next after that. Take a chance you will not be disappointed!
Karen Chance is really creative–it shows in her action scenes, in her world-building, in every little detail.
An entertaining story that is definitely a start to a new series with plenty of background information to help the storyline progress. I thought the story was very good but man are there a lot of characters introduced early on, so much so that I had to stop & grab a piece of paper and write down names and a few words of what paranormal they were & their role. Some of my fellow reviewers compared the story to Laurell K Hamilton’s Anita Blake series…I call BS. I don’t see any similarities other than vampires. Cassie is not a monster hunter nor a necromancer and ghosts are not the same as zombies. Nor does she have the abrasive attitude that Anita does. Great story and I’m looking forward to book 2.
Part of a action packed series. Which I’m still following. Highly addictive.
I loved this book, Mircea and Cassie are great together! I love the Pythia power and i’ve read the books after this one and they get better and better!
“4 out of 5 stars! This story isn’t like anything I expected … it’s set in a world not that much different then some of the other books/series’ that I’ve read before, however her abilities are completely different and constantly changing (it seems).
The only thing I had an issue with…”

An absolutely spellbinding read. The world and characters that Karen has written are first class and the plot is fantastic and exciting. I have read this book a few times now and I always am blown away about how quickly you immerse yourself in this world she has created and can vividly imagine the story as it unfolds, thanks to her brilliant writing and character developement. A must read that I would recommend to anyone.
I’m re-reading this series…again (that’s how much I LOVE the Cassie Palmer and Dory Basarab series!) and wanted to finally post reviews of all the stories in the intertwining timeline.
In Touch the Dark we meet Cassie who is a clairvoyant. She has visions of future and past horrors while also being able to see/talk to ghosts. And as if that isn’t enough to deal with, she’s on the run from the vampire who raised her…after murdering her parents. Now the North American Vampire Senate needs her help and promises to protect her from the Silver (“good” mages) and Black (bad mages) Circles. Yeah, right.
I love Cassie because while the world isn’t real, she is. She has flaws, she’s not perfect. And while she does ok at protecting herself she’s not kicking major a$$. But she’s also smart. “Where my life was concerned, I’d learned long ago that everyone wanted to use me for something.”
What made me pick up the next book is the writing. Karen Chance is absolutely amazing. I also love the world. In this book you’ll meet satyrs, weres, witches, a pixy and war mages. And there are so many more throughout the series. Plus it’s almost non-stop action.
One of my favorite bits:
“I just stood there, not able to believe I was watching a pixie have a conversation with a shrunken head. I think that was about the time I gave up on logic and just decided to go with the flow. If I was lucky, someone had spiked my drink and I was hallucinating.”
Been awhile but I remember loving this book/series.
This is the first book in the series so there is lots of setting up of storylines. There are lots of characters to keep track of and because they are vampires there are “family” lines to keep in order. Cassie is a strong female lead and she really stands up for herself even when maybe she should keep quiet. Lots of action. A great read.
This book is the first in a series of 6 or…7 books by Karen Chance called the Cassie Palmer novels. Chance is unbelievably original if you want a book that you can’t put down, this is the one. The only problem is with the first book. There is a lack of character development in the female protagonist of the story, you may find yourself caught up in the other characters of the book and her highly less desirable. Get to the second installment and you are hooked. I am currently on the fifth book “Hunt the Moon” and have come to learn the author’s quick pace, but a somewhat messy style of high-end imagery, that some may not like. If you can just get past the first, which I highly recommend you do, the exhilarating tragic events will cause you to forgive the protagonists vexing personality.
This novel had a lot of story packed within it’s pages! It was action packed, fully of mystery and I loved it! So many different facets of paranormal creatures and it is amazing. I cannot wait to see what else Cassie gets up to!
This book is an excellent first book in the series, and hopefully, further entries will flesh out the world-building and Cassie’s place in the hierarchy.

Another great series by Karen Chance. I LOVE these books. They keep me enthralled from the first page to the last.
For some reason, I always feel these books start off slow. But within 30 mi s I am completely caught and don’t want to put it down. I have read ever one of her books. Great characters.
A fun, fast-paced story with a strong female protagonist. A quick, easy read that was entertaining.
I loved this first book in n a great series, cassie is a great character, shes not instantly totally kick ass….she really grows over the book and definitely the series…..she is surrounded bbygreat and very different characters and I like the way she just keeps going no matter what. if you haven’t read this book u highly recommend it especially if you like kate series by ilona andrews
I get a kick out of this series! It makes me laugh out loud and is a constant roller coaster of action that I don’t want to get off of. The first book isn’t quite as strong as the next ones in the series, but it’s a fun starting point and gives you the base for the rest of the series. I’m on book four now, and have no intention of putting them down. Fun Urban fantasy!
I adore the Cassie Palmer books. Absolutely one of my favorite urban fantasy series, and Karen Chance is amazing. =)
