How exactly has one good deed landed me in the penalty box? Ice Knights defenseman Zach Blackburn has come down with the flu, and my BFF–his PR manager–begs me to put my nursing degree to use and get him back to health. Of course she would call in a favor for the most hated man in Harbor City. But when he’s finally on the mend and I’m sneaking out of his place, everything goes sideways. … goes sideways. Paparazzi spot me and pictures, plus accusations that I slept with him, fly faster than a hockey puck.
At first, all of Harbor City wants my blood–or to give me a girlie-girl makeover. But then…the team finally wins a game. And now this fickle town wants me with the big jerk twenty-four seven.
Argh. I never slept with him the first time! But no one will listen. Then the grumpy bastard goes and promises to break his no-fan-appearances rule to help raise money for a free health clinic–but only if I’m rink-side at every game. That’s not a deal I can turn down.
But when the team keeps winning, and I realize there’s more to him than his bad reputation, suddenly remembering to keep my real hands off my fake date gets harder and harder to do.

This was such a great read! The writing flowed well, and I LOVED Zach and Fallon together. They had great chemistry, and I loved that neither wanted to change the other. They fell for each other just the way they were. As a tomboy myself, I understand the frustration that other people just can’t accept you for the way you are. Fallon wasn’t a girly-girl, and I loved that she owned it. Zach and Fallon were both pretty stubborn, and it was frustrating to see Zach think that he deserved the treatment that his parents gave him. Although Fallon’s heart was in the right place, she shouldn’t have betrayed Zach’s trust. Just because you think you’re right, doesn’t mean you are. The ending was really sweet (and funny), and I love seeing these 2 get their HEA.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.
Bravo Avery Flynn!! Another great book! I absolutely loved this book. Now I am having a hard time deciding which is my favorite. Darn you, you marvelous writer you. Darn you!
In this third installment of the Hartigan Series, we not only get to see more Lucy, but we get to know more about Fallon. Fallon is not a girly girl. She doesn’t where makeup, fix her hair or date. Fallon is a workaholic nurse. Always taking care of everyone and fueling herself on little to no sleep. Between working at the hospital and volunteering at the clinic, Fallon barely has time for a life much less sleep. So when Lucy calls with a favor she wants to say no. Especially since it is her long weekend off. But Fallon knows something and that something has her saying yes.
Zach Blackburn is the Ice Knights newest recruit and the most hated man in Harbor City. Yep he is an asshole. But all of this asshole came from a really shitty past. He really has some deep dark secrets. Secrets that could ruin what little bit of his life he has left. All this has him on the defensive, kinda like his position on the team. Team member he is not, charity supporter, hell no, friends, none and girlfriend, what’s that! Yep he’s a loaner.
Zach is sick. So sick he calls the only person he trusts, Lucy his PR rep. Lucy is the only person he has bonded with since the trade. She understands him and helped him when he needed it the most. So imagine what he is thinking when he finds Fallon at his gate demanding to be let in. Dam that Lucy!
How will Zach get rid of Fallon? Beautiful, sassy Fallon. He won’t! She will fulfill her promise to Lucy. But what neither of them realize is that this will change the course of both their lives.
This book was amazing. In pure Avery form it has a deeper meaning behind the romance. It is a story that most readers can relate to. Zach has trust issues and Fallon has confidence issues. Most readers, like myself don’t have the confidence in ones self and struggle to fit in or feel good about how they look. This book touches on these struggles that are real. These type of subjects and stories hit close to home for some and usually make for the best books to read. I love a good book that has meaning and this book is one.
This book was beautifully written and really touched my heart. I melted when I read this book. There were tears, love and plenty of laughs to go around. I am in love with all of the characters in this series. I am having a hard time trying to decide who’s story I love best.
Overall this book is a wonderful steady paced read. It has strong independent characters, who are lovable and real. The story is well thought out and written. It is never rushed and has plenty to keep the readers attention. It is a fun read, full of laughs. I loved everything about this book and you are sure to love it as well. So grab your copy today.
No good deed goes unpunished. Avery Flynn never disappoints. When it comes to fiesty heroines and hard to resist heroes, she never misses the mark. Humor takes center stage when it comes to melting your heart. Tomboy is a captivating, laugh out loud temptation. Fallon proves that she’s no pushover. Zach is about to meet his match and his heart will not be prepared for the blow. Flynn always delivers a good time.
Though she isn’t playing a game, Fallon definitely comes out the winner! Tomboy nurse with a heart of gold and a bitchy attitude…yeah she’s my hero!
Fallon and Zack, #TeamZuck, are this romcoms winners even if they are on a losing streak. Cute and full of “piss and vinegar”, Tomboy is my MVP both on and off the ice.
This is the third book in The Hartigans series. I truly enjoyed this romatic comedy between Zach and Fallon. It was easy to read and entertaining. It was a well written story.
All Fallon wanted was to go home and take advantage of her days off to catch up on some sleep. But a phone call from her friend and future sister-in-law makes her end up babysitting the most annoying guy she’s ever met. Her job as a nurse has prepared her for any situation, but controlling the hallucinatory urge to punch the huge man in front of her will be a difficult task.
Zach is the most hated person in Harbor City. The long-awaited and equally expensive new Ice Knights player is not delivering what was expected, and to make matters worse, his closed and even antisocial way, makes him an unwelcome person in a city that lives and breathes hockey. He has his reasons not to trust and not let anyone approach, but in the state in which he is, all fault of a cupcake and a beautiful rival fan, it will be difficult to get rid of Fallon, who apparently is not afraid of his threats.
And what happens when a grumpy player approaches a woman who does not take any crap from anyone and abhors makeup? Many fights. But the unthinkable also happens. Zach returns to present the performance that made him famous and with this, Fallon is elevated to the status of lucky lady. And the confusion is armed.
Zach and Fallon will become the most talked about topic on gossip sites, and while Zach tries to persuade her to help him, Fallon will eventually enter a world where being a celebrity means getting nasty comments about her appearance. Add an intrusive Irish family, unfiltered friends, a great secret to explain Zach’s behavior, a team that is a family when someone need them, parents who look more like villains, and a blog with a tendency to gossip, and we have a beautiful romantic comedy.
Fallon and Zach were funny, stubborn, annoying, passionate and simply wonderful. The couple complete each other, despite the fights and strong temper. Fallon does not care for appearances and is content on her skin. Nursing is her passion, the need to help others is what drives her, and by knowing little by little who Zach really is, it is impossible not to fall in love with him. Zach may have tried to keep everyone away, but Fallon actually sees him, expecting nothing in return, without using him for something bigger.
This determined, beautiful woman with a huge heart is able to fill a huge void and bring Zach back to life.
Tomboy was a good read and a great addition to the series. Zach and Fallon deserve to be heard. With several situations that will bring a smile to the reader, it is impossible not to fall in love with these two.
***ARC received in exchange of an honest opinion***
I was about to lose it reading this book. It was so good and hit so many true feelings that people battle rather they are famous or not. Tomboy is just a must read because Fallon and Zach are two peas and a pod and momma hit her with the truth one two punch. Yep, the trueness of “she get it from her momma”.
Yet another great Hartigan story…
In fact, I think Fallon’s and Zach’s might be my favorite so far. These two have so many great moments which run from sweet to steamy, and it’s a reader’s delight to follow along with them. After a rough deal thanks to his parents, Ice Knight’s defenseman, Zach Blackburn tries to keep everyone at a distance; however, all his walls are no match for the take-no-prisoners Fallon Hartigan. Fallon is a strong h, who fights for who and what matters to her, even if they might not want her to. I love that she never once considers being anything but true to herself; as with Gina and Lucy in the previous books, Flynn has made a heroine who refuses to be confined by the boxes society insists on fashioning for women. Fallon is more than capable of standing up for herself, as well as standing by Zach.
Another enjoyable element here is that we get to visit with old friends – the other Hartigans and Fallon’s best ladies – and Flynn also sets up some potential Hs for her forthcoming Ice Knights series. I am a sucker for a good series, especially a good hockey series, so I am very excited to see how those possibilities play out.
I listened to as well as read this one. Narrators Brian Pallino and Savannah Peachwood both return for this installment and once again add another dimension to Flynn’s already likeable characters. Peachwood strikes the perfect balance of tough yet vulnerable for Fallon, while Pallino is pitch perfect as the gruff but lovable Zach. Their performances make this one well worth a listen.
Recommended for anyone who enjoys a broody hockey player and the no nonsense nurse who wins his heart.
I’m obsessed with this series!! This audio had me laughing so much!! Fallon is so fierce that she’s the perfect match for the most hated man in Harbor City!! I can’t wait for more Ice Knights and I definitely need more Hartigans in my life!!!
Fallon is one of my favorite female leads in a while. I love that she just is who she is, and that’s all there is to it. She’s fierce and fights for the people she cares about. She’s human and makes mistakes. She’s just a woman I’d love to be friends with. There is this scene when all the shit hits the fan, and she has eye liner on one eye, and I just related to this so much, I’d tell you more, but I don’t want to spoil anything.
And that brings me to Zach Blackburn. The muffins, oh the muffins, it’s too ridiculous and hilarious. Also, I love his dark and messy back story, but with his attitude he is definitely lucky he’s hot. And I do really like when his cinnamon roll center peeks through that bad personality he’s adopted. Which brings me to the Ice Knights–which now have their own series, starting with Parental Guidance that came out on June 17th and was my favorite book of 2019!! Okay, so Blackburn is a dick to everyone, even his teammates, but do they give up on him? NO. They are a freakin’ team and they show up for their members. I love that, and I am so excited to get all of their stories in the new Ice Knights series.
Best one of the series!!
This series was designed to focus on main characters that are generally looked down upon in society. In Tomboy, as the name suggests, the main character is not the preppy girl and is a tomboy. The male character is the defenseman for a pro hockey team who generally has women falling all over him, and you can imagine the type of women, so when no-nonsense doctor Fallon Hartigan falls into his life, she isn’t the type he thought he would fall for.
In the previous books, it was the females who was the interesting characters. In this one, I found Zach to be the more interesting one. He isn’t the typical, rich sports player we see often in these books. He is hated by the fans, he is making the team lose constantly, and he is not rich due to a horrible previous mistake, which I will not spoil. All this built an interesting character.
As the other ones, it was funny and hot and super meaningful and full of emotion. Zach was moody and full of attitude which was a wonderful match to Fallon’s no-nonsense. They both avoided the unavoidable: falling for each other, but when it happened neither could stop it.
I can’t wait to read more from this author!
LOVED THIS ONE!!!!! Zach is really just a great big teddy bear when you get to know him and has had a hard time of it but now that he has Fallon Hartigan on his side as his Lady Luck things are looking brighter for him and the Ice Knights. What starts as a bad case of food poisoning and Fallon nursing him back to health at Lucy’s request turns into so much more. Add in the banter, the texts, the Hartigan family meals, and all those well intentioned and helpful nudges from friends, family members and teammates and how could they go wrong. Definitely cannot miss this one!
This is book #3, in The Hartigans series. This book can be read as a standalone novel. To avoid spoilers, and to understand the series, I recommend reading these in order.
Fallon gets suckered into taking care of a spoiled hockey player when he is ill. Her friends and family think its funny since she loves hockey and is a nurse. Being attracted to the big lug isn’t what she plans either.
Zach does not understand why so many people want to hate on him. All hockey player have off days, even some off seasons. Why is it someone wants him to suffers so much? Then an angel comes to make him better with her bitter tongue. If only he didn’t want to see his torturer naked.
This battle of wills turns into such a great story for the two most hardheaded characters! I loved the banter, so fun and witty. Lots of heat and more people from the great series and families that make this such a good book. I enjoyed this book, and feel the wait for it was worth it.-
I want to say that this is my favorite book in the series, but I enjoyed it so much that I want to go back and read Butterface and Muffin Top just to make sure (and also because they’re pretty awesome books too). I’m so stoked to read Parental Guidance and get more Ice Knights delightfulness! I also hope we get more from the Hartigan clan because I sort of love them. I loved how fierce and unapologetically self Fallon is – she knows her strengths and weaknesses and embraces them. I also love how vulnerable Zach is – he’s just a big old softy in a hard shell. I think that my favorite part of Tomboy though, is that we get enough drama for the plot to move at a good pace, but minimal angst (I had enough of that in the last 7 books I read – your girl was in need of a break). This was just a fun, sexy (perhaps even sexier than the first two books?), lighthearted gem of a story and a great intro to a new series that I’m SUPER excited for! 4.5 out of 5 wine glasses.
Cute quick read
This is the third book in The Hartigan series. It is a stand alone sports, rom-com with interconnecting characters from the first 2 books. It is the story of Fallon Hartigan and Zach Blackburn and it’s thankfully told in the third person POV! Fallon is a ER nurse who happens to be bossy and bitchy and Zach is a grumpy, distrustful, hockey player. When these two are together the sparks fly along with the snarky humor. Pick it up, read it and you won’t regret the laughs that come with this sweet, sassy story.
Enjoyed this new-to-me author so much that I have begun working my way through the other books in this series.
Disappointing, boring and worst of all unromantic.
The interaction between the 2 main characters was entertaining. She didn’t put up with his drama & told him like it was.

There is something about an Avery Flynn book that captures you and holds you captive. (In all the best ways!) I adored the first book of this series, loved the second, and I loved this one just as much as the last.
One of my favorite things about Avery Flynn’s books is the down to Earth characters. Her characters aren’t just cookie cutter rom-com characters. They are real. They have flaws, insecurities, and problems. The realistic characters make the story more believable. I loved both Fallon and Zach’s characters. Zach was a perfect bad boy character with a secret. Once his secret is revealed it is easy to see how he acted the way he did. Fallon was a perfect female lead. She didn’t take crap from anyone, especially Zach. She was selfless, vulnerable, and totally relatable. I also loved getting to see the characters from the first two books!
I loved the underlying theme of friendship that was spread throughout the book. Fallon had her girlfriends that were always there for her. They came over for a girls night when Fallon was at rock bottom. Even her mother joined them. It was beautiful. And then there was Zach’s hockey team. They showed that they were there for him in so many ways, even when Zach was a total douchebag. By the end of the book, I was jazzed that his friendship with his teammates finally seemed to be going somewhere. I hope that we get to see more of their friendship in future books.
The romance was great. It really worked between them. I love the way that they came together and broke through one another’s defenses. I also love how Zach was the one to realize that what they had was real and to push for it. Men are normally the ones to shy away from relationships, but not Zach. He saw something real in Fallon and in what they had together and he went for it. I also loved how the romance between them showed that people make mistakes, sometimes with the best intentions.
Overall, this book will have you fangirling so hard. You will connect with these realistic characters and fall in love with their love story. I can’t wait for more of the Hartigans and I can’t wait to see more of these hockey players!
