What a book!
Any day this reader can dive into the world that author Jude Knight has created is a good day. To Wed A Proper Lady grabbed me from the very first page and kept me reading far into the night. James and Sophia were perfect for one another and I was glad to see some returning characters from Jude’s series. The characters (as always) were well written and there were enough twists in the plot to keep me intrigued about what would happen next. To Love A Proper Wife is another fantastic book by a wonderful author that will have you falling in love with these enchanting characters. A must-read!
3.5 stars
Stay with this story because the first part was hard to get through. So many character’s it was hard to keep track. Especially who belonged to which family because they didn’t get along.
This dragged at times, especially the repetitiveness of who the H was courting. How beautiful the younger sister was and no-one would want the older one. I did enjoy the secondary character’s. The h’s brother was describing his two elderly aunts and I thought what a beautiful way to describe them. TWO FADED LEAVES ON FORGOTTEN BRANCHES OF THEIR FAMILY TREE! That touched my heart!
This is a clean story with only kisses. Some nasty character’s who were out for only themselves. Hints at sexual abuse of children, nothing described – thankfully.
Chapter’s are out of sequence – 22, 23 and I think 24. I thank another reviewer for pointing this out before I started to read. It was confusing, even after I knew it was out of order.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, little on romance, some character’s written with more depth than others and only kisses. Ends at about 93% on my e-reader. Did enjoy the epilogue. (ljb)
I loved this excellent book. It had me going through so many emotions while reading this. I loved James and Sophia, they both try to please their relatives. I loved watching their relationship bloom. Hooked me from the beginning.

This book was not what I expected, even though it was predictable. I have read historical romance before but this was different and it was this that had me intrigued.
I love Jude Knight books. They very rarely have the typical hero or heroine that you expect from a Historical Romance. In this case you have a spinster with a tragic past and a half foreign nobleman who must marry impeccable blood lines to gain acceptance. The story is engrossing and the characters entertaining. I would definitely recommend this book.
Thank you Jude Knight and Booksprout for allowing me an advance copy and an outlet for my honest feedback.

This PG15 Regency romance involves social privilege and racism and can be read in a morning. I had an ARC and this voluntary review is my own opinion.
Jude Knight has written a very enjoyable story with a sweet heroine and a hero you will be cheering for. James, our hero, is the barbarian referenced in the title. Raised in a Asian mountain kingdom as a prince, he is trying very hard to fit into the very confusing Ton society. Paradoxically, James is more honorable and respectful than most of the Ton gentlemen. Lady Sophia, believes that she has no hope of marriage and thinks that James is using her as a shield for his courtship of her beautiful younger sister. A comedy of miscommunication ensues, where James is sure that he has conveyed his growing affection for Sophia and Sophia is increasingly sure that this very attractive man she is falling for will marry her sister. Add her sister’s various suitors and misguided matchmakers to the mix and the result is a memorable sweet romance.

Jude Knight never fails to pull at my heartstrings and this sweet and charming romance between James, Lord Elfingham and Lady Sophia Belvoir is no different. Jude has woven a story of family loyalty, love and affection into a tapestry of amazing characters.
You’ll find yourself rooting for James and Sophia who have obstacles to overcome from outside forces in order to celebrate their union and marriage. James desire to marry for love and have the kind of relationship he saw his parents have his whole life is so honorable and sweet. He had chosen Sophia, who sometimes lacks self-confidence but James is in love with her.
I loved the story, I’ve loved all of Jude’s stories! I like that they are unique and driven by love. There are lots of fun hijinks in the story and a wonderfully paced plot. The road to love isn’t always an easy one and James and Sophia have to to fight for their well deserved happily ever after.
There’s lots of drama and fun too. The writing is excellent, the dialogue is wonderful and the characters are interesting and divine.
Thank you so much dude percent of charmingly delightful love story.
Good historical read. Entertaining and interesting characters. Like a good historical story of love but the characters don’t want to follow their hearts. Good conversation and interaction. Would recommend!

Love is often when and where you least expect to find it and Lady Sophia and Viscount James experience just this. James has returned with his father heir to the Dukedom, at the request of the dying Duke. The deathbed request of the Duke is for his son Earl Sutton to disavow his marriage and 10 subsequent children simply because his now deceased wife was a foreigner and not recognized by the Duke. The far reaching consequences involve all of the Earls children, but most of all James, who is expected to marry one of his cousins just to insure the lineage will continue. This story has heart and will reel you in and hold you till it is done. Great story.

I am always excited when another Jude Knight book comes my way! Once again, she did not disappoint. What a wonderfully written story! This is such a delightful story filled with intrigue and romance, I found myself immersed in the book until the very end. I just could not put it down! Her descriptions and writings style are so well put together that the story pulls you in and keeps you captivated until you finish. This story had me enchanted from start to finish. James was torn between his loyalty to his family and his love for Sophie. Despite her love for him, Sophie does not want to stand in the way of James’ duty to his family. These were both beautifully portrayed characters who had such heart and depth. I enjoyed following them on their journey to love.

Women’s Lib in Historical Regency England

Jamie was born and raised in an area close to Iran, his late mother is a native of the area. His father, the King of the Mountains and Earl of Sutton, sired a passel of half native children, five of which have accompanied him to see the Duke. The Duke, now bedridden, never recognized his marriage.
The Dukedom is in disarray, broke, owing all the creditors. They have sold off all the unentailed properties, let go many servants, and the estate is beginning to look rundown, inside and out. It is up to James’ father, Lord Sutton, to restore The estate.
The Duke of Haverton, is contesting James’ claim to the Earldom, and then eventually the Dukedom, because of his native mother and the supposedly unrecognized marriage. He is seen as illegitimate. Unique and wonderful historical romance!
A delightful romance full of emotion, drama, action, plot twists, and love.
Where heroes are strong and brave and the women are determined and resilient.
This was such a sweet story about expectations, fitting in, societal rules, family dynamics, discrimination, sexism, courage, determination, hope, and love. It had a wonderful cast of characters, plenty of humor, and an entertaining plot.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
I am always delighted with the writing of this author. It is a simple story but somehow the detailed descriptions and the slow pace of the events make it a pleasure to read. I am always awed by the amount of detail that she can convey in each scene making it much livelier. The room decorations, clothes, food, street atmosphere, everything is lovingly described in detail.
To wed a proper lady continues the story of the Mountain King. After the death of his relatives, he must come to England and assume the dukedom. He arrives with some of his 10 children namely his firstborn, James. The ton considers them barbarians and their succession to the title is disputed. To ensure that their reputation is safe James must marry someone from a respectable family. And his sight is set on Sophia, a wallflower overshadowed by her pretty younger sister.
A good story that entertains and delights. I am looking forward to seeing what happens to the other children.
To Wed A Proper Lady is book #2 in the Children of The Mountain King series, but can be read without knowledge of the previous book. The series is about James Winderfield’s children getting their right place among the British aristocracy – a hard task since Winderfield had been away from England and married to a Persian princess for almost 30 years.
Being back to England to pay his respects to his dying father (the Duke of Winshire), Winderfield must also prove his marriage and children are legitimate. He brings with him part of his family, including his heir, another James Winderfield. James II sees himself in a predicament because he must marry quickly, but after meeting sweet Sophia Belvoir by chance, he doesn’t even want to even hear about other ladies, although he is willing to do his duty if necessary.
Sophia Belvoir is also attracted to James II, but they are in opposite sides in the ton, since her family is supporting those who don’t want to accept James II as the heir to the dukedom of Winshire. Plus, due to two unsuccessful engagements, Sophia is not confident about Winderfield son returning her feelings for herself. She fears he may be just after a lady from an old and respectful family.
Around the main pair, we come to learn the reasons why Winderfield father left England and the dukedom years ago and a little about the other Winderfield children – the ones who will have their own books in the series. I loved reading this instalment and I can’t wait to read the next ones about this adventurous, but loving family

This story grabbed me on the first page when James Winderfield accompanies his father who returns home after thirty-five years in the mountains of the east, summoned by his dying father. After decades as The Mountain King, the elder Winderfield faces a step down to the title of an English duke, and the challenge of shepherding his children, whose mother is a Persian princess, into the life of the ton with the respect they deserve and their innate dignity intact. The family bond, loyalty, and affection radiate from every page. James, as his father’s oldest, accepts—if he doesn’t precisely embrace— a courtesy title as next in line, and can handle English society, but he detests his one large challenge. Both his vile grandfather and his loving father expect him to marry a proper English lady, a prospect distasteful for its implication his blood isn’t blue enough and a sense he’s being set out to stud for family purposes. What he wants is a loving marriage like his parents enjoyed. His journey held my heart from start to finish.

This was a marvelous romance. I loved the lovely and intriguing journey. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book in exchange for a free copy.
This historical romance had an exotic feel to it with an heir returning from a foreign land after he had married a foreign princess bringing with him his half-English son James, who would one day be a Duke. There are claims against the right to the title and whether or not the marriage was legitimate along with threats against their lives. Meanwhile, James is tasks with marrying a wellborn English lady and from his first meeting with her he has his heart set on Lady Sophia. If only her brother would accept him and she would accept his hand during the time his father mandated that he marry before his grandfather passes away. I loved the horses and employees James brought back with him that were all strong, tough, and unique.
This book was a pure delight to read!! I loved all of the characters and the things that the family of the H, James came up with were an absolute hoot!! Sophia needs to get a little confidence in herself self and that was where James was so perfect for her because he and his irreverent family were just the ones to instill that confidence in her. I always enjoy anything that Ms. Knight writes but this one was extraordinarily special!!
