Gwen Hywel is a talented weaver and when she is hired by the MacFhearguis clan to create a tapestry, she’s thrilled. While on a ride around the property, she discovers more about a family curse and with a tug on a thread, everything turns black. She awakens in the past and must find her way back, somehow. But when she meets Patrick MacFhearguis, her heart is conflicted. Even though she yearns for her previous life, her heart craves to be close to him. Will she choose love and break the curse or will she turn her back on destiny?
To Weave a Highland Tapestry is a beautiful holiday romance set in 13th century Scotland. The Fae are hard at work bringing together scarred souls, no matter which century they reside in. Gwen and Patrick are lonely yet will never admit it. When they first meet, they spar verbally but like most people, they are scared to fall in love. Past hurts rear their ugly heads and the couple must communicate better to overcome the obstacles. The romance is slow-burning but so worth it. I loved watching them dance together and apart towards their happy ending.
The best thing about To Weave a Highland Tapestry, though, is the Dragon Knights and their families. I loved catching up with Adam and Meggie with their children in modern-day and all the Dragon Knights and their families in the 13th century. It was like a family reunion and I became part of the clans, at least for a little while.
I also loved the medieval Mid-Winter traditions and customs Mary Morgan weaved throughout the story. It transported me back in time and I imagined pulling my husband into an alcove for a kiss.
If you love time-travel romance with independent heroines and virile heroes, you’ll love this book. Fans of Outlander will love this one.
Favorite Character/Quote: Gwen. From the moment she appears her honest reactions to everything she goes through rings true. Her time-travel adventure is impossible yet she’s experiencing it. Her lightness contrasts Patrick’s darkness and together they bring out the best in each other. One of my favorite Mary Morgan heroines.
My Rating: 5 stars
Patrick and Gwen’s story was truly enchanting and it was such a joy to go back and visit with old friends! I absolutely loved this story. We are once again taken on a journey to the past when Gwen is hurdled through time and rescued by Patrick in the nick of time. Patrick tries to resist the pull his heart has towards Gwen because of an ancient curse and Gwen is looking for a way back to her own time, however the Fae have other plans for both of them. Mary Morgan definitely knows how to expertly weave a tale with so much heart and emotion in it that keeps the reader riveted from beginning to end. I look forward to many more books from Ms Morgan as she is certainly one of my go to authors. This is definitely a book I will re-read and hopefully it will be available in audio at some point. Thank you once again Mary Morgan for sharing your amazing talent and giving us another wonderful story to enjoy! It was an honour to have been chosen to read an ARC of this book.
Mary Morgan weaves another magical tale with Patrick and Gwen’s story. When Gwen finds herself 800 years into the past, not only must she accept that she’s traveled back in time, she must also try to find out WHY and it all starts with a tapestry.
Patrick is a Highland warrior who believes his family is cursed by the Fae and has hardened his heart towards ever finding love. When he meets Gwen, it’s instant attraction but he fights it while trying to understand why she was sent to his time.
I so enjoyed seeing some of the characters from previous books and this story is as well written as the others in the Dragon Knights series which I also thoroughly enjoyed. I was given an ARC of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Gracious, where to start!
More STARS! They need more stars as some books, like this one, deserve so much more!
So that being stated, i want to thank MARY MORGAN for another highland romance that’s superb in detail from perspectives of the present day and past . The story of Patrick and Gwen , will have you gasping for air as Gwen plummets to the past , hold your breath as she’s found in dire circumstances by Patrick and the achingly poignant story of who they are, what drives them and then realizing they were meant to be together.
Mary , like Gwen ,weaves her tapestry of words into a story that you are sure to love and want more . I hope she ( Mary) revisits Patrick and Gwen in her future writings ( yes, there’s a hint given about WOLVES) .
Im an avid fan of Mary Morgan’s books and hope you enjoy resding this and her other books in this series .EXCELLENT STUFF!
****I recieved this as an ARC and these are my tboughts given freely****Mary Morgan
Readers who enjoy romance blended with a the combination of history and the mystical will be utterly enchanted by this clever ‘weaving’ of a tale. In To Weave a Highland Tapestry Mary Morgan offers us a wander through the past thanks to a bit of time-travel; which works in her quite contemporary main character surprisingly well.
Gwen, whose sense of history is apparent in her study and use of ancient weaving techniques, was attracted the the task of stitching the tapestry at the MacFhearguis’ castle. An act of kindness gives us a bit of insight into just who she is and, as the story goes forward, we cannot help but admire her curiosity, her strength and her determination. This one main character brings together many ‘threads’ of story, fom the curse knotted by the slighted Fae, so long ago, the struggles of clan MacFhearguis and, the one we are waiting for, Patrick. But how can a romance evolve from almost different worlds, at utterly different times?
From the outset, we readers wait for the moment that we do see coming; when Gwen must go back…but then, we are swept along into and unpredictable story that is more than romance. There was that ancient wrong–the Fae were indeed slighted–but can the two change what has been written into the lineage? Can they, together, weave a different future for what should be a magnificent castle, sitting now on utterly barren lands? Their challenges and their quest move this story right along.
More, the backdrop and sense of place is wonderful. Readers will feel as if they have traveled the highlands. This is however, very much a time travel paranormal story and I would only recommend it to readers who are already firmly fans of the genre. Looking forward to the next by Mary Morgan. Do read!
Patrick is a warrior with a land that has been cursed. Although his Knight friends and brother have found love and wives, he swears he will never do so.
Gwen lives in the current world. She is a weaver using the traditional methods, hired to make a tapestry for descendants of Patrick. Since the curse involves special threads weaved requiring a special person to reverse the curse. Neither realizes that their lives spanning eight hundred years are about to coincide.
The warrior in him rescues Gwen and is taken by her beauty and baring. Another beautiful story of love in the present and past. I loved seeing old friends from previous stories. The touching love story and the characters with the wonderful world-building make for a wonderful read. Another winner by the author.
Modern-day weaver Gwen Hywel travels to a recently restored castle in the Scottish Highlands in order to weave a tapestry for Adam and Meggie MacFhearguis, the couple residing in Leomhann Castle, the home of the ancient Clan MacFhearguis. Little did she know magic was abundant in the forest surrounding the castle and that time travel was real. By removing a gold thread from a sacred yew tree, she was embarking on the journey of a lifetime.
Highland warrior Patrick MacFhearguis refuses to take a wife. His family, land, and home are cursed, and the women who the men in his family wed are doomed to heartache. Then he meets a strange woman in the forest who desperately needs help. Their attraction is instant, but will he risk his hardened heart and Gwen’s future happiness for a life spent together?
OMG. I love Gwen and Patrick. Both of them are such strong, well-rounded characters. While she’s opening her heart for something better, Patrick is trapped between doing what his heart desires and what he thinks is the right thing.
The book skipped from present to past, and back again a few times, but each time jump was perfectly done. I was never confused as to what time period I was reading in.
I wish I had the opportunity to read the other books in the connecting series, in particularly The Order of the Dragon Knights, before I read this one. From what I can tell, all of Ms. Morgan’s paranormal/highland books are connected, but of course can be read as standalones. Anyway, I was sometimes confused since there were so many characters, but that was cleared up as I got to know them better.
The large cast of secondary characters includes Adam and Meggie along with their sons, the four MacKay brothers and their wives, Patrick’s brother/laird Alex (is he getting a story?), and various friends and children. For fans of the previous books, I’m sure they loved the scenes with Adam and Meggie raising their headstrong boys, and the MacKays enjoying married bliss. As a newbie to Ms. Morgan’s books, I’m definitely interested in learning more about those couples.
There were a few typos, but nothing that took me out of the story. I like Ms. Morgan’s writing style and use of Scottish words. This is the first book I’ve read from her and certainly won’t be the last.

To Weave A Highland Tapestry by Mary Morgan is book 8 in the Order of the Dragon Knights Series. This is the story of Gwen Hywel and Patrick MacFhearguis. I haven’t yet read the previous book so for me this was a standalone book. This book is a time travel story also which is a nice change for some of the stories I read. Gwen has won the chance to weave a tapestry for a castle that is being restored. This leads her to look around the property to get motivation for her tapestry. But the unexpected happens and she wakes up in the past and meets Patrick. Patrick is part of the MacFhearguis clan who have been cursed. Nothing has brought them enjoyment nor has anything been prosper for them. Can Gwen being that change that they?
Enjoyed their story.
Prepare to be enchanted as you are taken on a journey through time that will spark your imagination and grip your heart! Mary Morgan, master storyteller pulls us into another tale of enchantment with visits from previous characters and new ones that were meant to be together.
Patrick MacFhearguis, a strong Scottish warrior (*sigh*) is tired and weary from the past. Due to the “curse” of his clan, Patrick feels he cannot marry and subject a wife to it. Yes, his brother Adam had gone to the future and married and now had a son, but he was out of their realm.
Gwen Hywel, 800 years in the present has a tie to the Clan MacFhearguis because she is commissioned to weave a tapestry of the family for Adam and Meggie his wife. But when she sees a yew tree with threed woven through it, she pulls it loose and her journey begins back to 1209 Scotland. Only to be set upon by three men, but luckily (okay yes fate) has Patrick and his two guards rescuing her, but Patrick is wounded.
Thus the true journey begins!! Dragon Knights, time travel, angst, curses, fae magic and wonderful characters turn this into an extraordinary story as old as time! Loved it!
A Tale from the Order of the Dragon Knights series a well written story with a very good storyline. Patrick MacFhearguis and Gwen Hywel’s story of time travel and the love these two find. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Aptly titled, superbly executed story
Mary Morgan has done it again. To Weave a Highland Tapestry is the story of a modern woman Gwen & an ancient warrior, Patrick and a journey through time from Urquhart Castle to happily ever after. But it’s so much more. In this author’s expert hands the story manages to bring strands of her other series’ heroes and heroines into the fray. We journey into a magical, time travel fantasy taking moments to look in on the Dragon Knights and their ladies while Gwen and Patrick experience their own emotional and physical trials.
The weaving theme is beautifully embodied by Gwen who travels to Castle Leomhann with a commission to weave a tapestry for the laird and his lady. Of course nothing is smooth or simple for Gwen who, well versed in medieval Highland lore, is hurtled back through time and meets Patrick MacFhearguis. With the meddlesome help of the Fae, Gwen discovers and unravels the true meaning of the legend of the yew tree and in so doing weaves a strong bond and a happy future with scarred Patrick.
A well-told tale with enough emotion, action and heat to keep one up well past bed time and craving more.
A Touch of Scottish Magic and Romance
As an American of Scottish descent, I’m always drawn to fiction that takes place in Scotland. What a delight that this book added the faery and magical elements as well. The author did an excellent job of setting the mood and place. She was able to define the struggles of the main characters well so that they were believable and relatable even with the magical backdrop. I like how she had a prologue in the beginning that set the scene for how the backstory of the novel was set up. She almost gave it a mystical quality, like the beginnings of the Tolkien movies; I could just about hear it intoned like those. I found this to be a page-turning read. I wanted to see what was going to happen to the characters. If you like your Scottish fiction with romance and a touch of magic, you may very well enjoy this book.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
This is time travel Scottish romance at it’s best! Mary Morgan weaves a tale of Fae magic and healing love for the ages. Gwen Hywel travels through time to break the curse on the MacFhearguis’ of Leomhann Castle.
In present day Gwen arrives at Leomhann Castle to gain research on her commission to weave a tapestry for the castle from the owners Adam & Meggie MacKay MacFhearguis. She is trained in the old art of weaving after being fostered after her parents died. As she learns the lore surrounding the castle and the surrounding grounds she learns of an ancient yew tree. When she visits it with Adam’s son Jamie she finds a golden thread wrapped around the tree. Jamie warns her to leave it alone unless she’s willing to accept the consequences. She unravels it finding herself in the year 1209. Patrick MacFhearguis rescues her from agents of the English King John on his trip to bring home mead from the neighboring MacKays. As he’s wounded they end up at Urquhart castle home of the MacKay Dragon Knights. And so begins the tale full of characters we have come to love and other 20th century women each brought back through time by the Fae for a purpose. We find Gwen is there to begin a legacy of love at Leomhann instead of the cursed suffering there. She weaves a tapestry with the family history pictured and leaves instructions to her descendants to present it to Adam & Meggie on the Midwinter Solstice of 2019.
I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have to confess I’m a fan of Mary Morgan’s fabulous stories of Medieval Scottish Highlanders who find love with modern-day women. To Weave a Highland Tapestry fits in with the award-winning stories it followed.
Both Patrick and Gwen have history weighing them down that makes them miserable and hopeless. The only way to rise above it and discover their love and happiness is to work together. It’s a journey I loved reading.
Also, I loved the chance to visit and catch-up with my beloved Dragon Knights and how their lives have changed.
I don’t know how Ms. Morgan would do with a tapestry, but she certainly knows how to weave a story.
Gwen studies medieval times, and weaves beautiful tapestries. The castle owners have requested that she make a family tapestry for them, and she finds herself 800 years in the past. Patrick is a warrior. His family has had a curse for many years. When he meets Gwen, he believes that they Fae are messing with him again. What will it take for these two to stop fighting fate and embrace their destiny? This was a pretty good book, a bit out of my comfort zone and not what I generally read. I didn’t love it, but I certainly enjoyed reading it.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Past and present are woven together beautifully in lovely holiday story by Mary Morgan. To Weave A Highland Tapestry (A Tale from the Order of the Dragon Knights) bring a MacFhearguis to the MacKays for a curse to be changed into a blessing of love and hope. Personal internal struggles, political loyalty, family, friendship and love are blended into an amazing story.
Patrick MacFhearguis finds accidental time traveler Gwen Hywel along the way on a trip to Urquhart Castle. The struggles of cultures, time and fears make their story fascinating especially since the captivating characters are well-developed emotionally and personality wise. The charming conclusion back to the future is one of my all-time favorite endings.
The beginning of the new series is intriguing with the hints the author gave. However, I hope that the other MacFhearguis brother, Alex, gets his story along with a supporting character who simply stole my heart, the young but old soul Jamie.
No cliffhangers and easily a stand-alone story but you will find the other time traveling women enticing, so much so you will want to read their stories, too.
The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Do you believe in fairy tales?? How about Dragons? No?? Oh my, you have no idea what you are missing.
Gwen Hywel is excited to be hired to do a weave, for the MacFhearguis clan, yes, that’s the one the Dragon Knights.
She has pulled a thread from a place that will either change her destiny and have family or be what she has always been, lonely. She is funny and quirky, and yet has painful memories of lost desires.
Patrick MacFhearguis, *sigh* is tired of the meddlesome fae, and will not succumb to the spunky, stubborn short haired fairy like female. If he does, he fears losing his life, but not only his life but his family’s life.
Both of these strong willed people will either yield to their desires, or turn to another path. Which one should they take? Who will be the victor?
I thought the kids were cute and oh so mischievous. What am I talking about?? Oh no, you have to get the book to find out. hahaha. I can’t wait to read their story.
I also enjoyed revisiting all the women of the future, and the past, and of course the Dragon Knights that changed how we live. 😉
I really enjoyed this story. But Mary Morgan has always intrigued me with her books. I’ve been reading her stories for four years, and yes, I have read every single one of her Dragon Knights books. I am so glad I found her, she is truly and wonderful author. Her imagination has no boundaries, and I love her stories.
Thank you Mary for giving me the opportunity to read To Weave A Highland Tapestry.
There are so many reasons why Mary Morgan’s work speaks to me.
Morgan’s world-building is phenomenal. She has tied two exhilarating series (Order of the Dragon Knight’s and Legends of the Fenian Warriors) together letting me revisit characters that are dear to me. – Beam me there Scotty!
She combines my favorite genre into some really classy writing! Time travel, medieval historical settings, and a fantasy world of Fae. It’s entertaining, imaginative, and credible.
The characters have their flaws, merits and secrets! Some are bold, daring to break rules, others are confused and scared. She has a delightful cast of emotions and conflicts which will either anger or endear. She knows what buttons to push to totally, 100% engage me!She ties family, love and passion into the mix. What is not to like about all that?
Styling and pacing unfold the story naturally, while leaving threads of unanswered questions to gnaw at my curiosity!
Traveling in Mary Morgan’s world is not for the weak of heart. It’s for the dreamer in us, the one who reaches for the unbelievable just to find reality within her grasp.
Her series are the kind where a reader gladly rereads the story and the series, many times over. Very worth it to listen on Audible, too.
You will be charmed with To Weave a Highland Tapestry. This story is somewhat pivotal providing the reader hints of what challenges face the world, spanning time.
A little about the story:
Gwen Hywel is a woman a bit out of step with her present life. She loves medieval history and tapestry weaving. When she has the opportunity to create a mural for the MacFhearguis, she jumps at the opportunity. The MacFheargius are not the ordinary family. They are time travelers themselves, coming from the past. (their story is in her earlier series)
One day as she’s trying to decide what to weave, circumstances send her whirling into the past. Can she cope with her new world? Can she return to her own time? What about her promise to make the tapestry?
Gwen Hywel is a Weaver who has always had a fascination with medieval times. When she wins the contract to make a special tapestry for a castle that is being restored, it’s like a dream come true.
Patrick MacFhearguis and his family have been living with a curse on them for generations. The land is barren and none of them enjoy happy lives. What starts as a short trip to collect something to help with the mid winter celebrations could change more than his life.
There is lots of adventure and excitement for our heroine, and lots of soul searching for our hero.
A fascinating timeslip romance that takes us back to visit the “Dragon Knights” we have met in previous books in the series. They are not really involved in the story, except as secondary characters. That makes it easy to read this book on it’s own, but be advised it will make you want to read all the others.
I have read and loved all them. They are absolutely magical.
Get ready to be blown away! 5 stars plus
I love Mary Morgan’s novels. Every time, she dazzles me! ‘To Weave a Highland Tapestry’ is a real page-turner! Her carefully chosen words seemed to float on the pages. She is so talented and descriptive that she makes us dream and propel us into an imaginary world that revolves around Urquhart Castle in Scotland. Her characters are nicely blended into an imaginary web where anything can happen. It’s a little gem to discover! Get ready to really be captivated by a story of old and new friendship, trust, hope and peace.
After a journey of many ups and downs, Patrick and Gwen will discover that they are destined to each other regardless of their past! Hope will become a determining factor in their lives! Hope you enjoy their love story as much as me! I loved following the Dragon Knights!
On a personal note, I visited the ruins of Urquhart Castle in Scotland and felt it enchanted!
