A story that touched me to the core and tore at my heart. At times I had to close my eyes and take a deep breath as this author’s descriptive words evoked the scenes in my mind. Yes, war has it’s horror’s and our hero, and yes, he is a hero, Burke Nicholson, endured more than a single person should or could. He had been a spy for the crown and he was now going home.
His first duty was to go see the wife of his friend and fellow spy who had died because of him, Lady Covington, or Gemma, as Rob had called her. What Gemma saw as she met him was a haunted man.
I want to just tell you the entire story because it touched me so much.. I have to say that I adore this author and her writing. As soon as a new book comes out by her I have to read it and know it will always be something I will enjoy and not want to put down.
Secrets, spies, intrigue, torture, murder, and of course two hearts who were meant to be together if only they could endure the journey there… One of the best stories I have read this year and know it will stay in my thoughts for awhile. Cannot wait for the next and hope it is Reid.
I believe this is my first book by Alexa Aston, it won’t be my last. Yep, it’s that good. Ms. Aston has provided historical romance readers with a well-written book furnished with an outstanding cast of characters. Gemma’s father has decided to marry her off to a man old enough to be her grandfather. Gemma talks her best friend Rob into marrying her before he leaves for the war. While he’s away she becomes a code breaker for the Crown. Burke is a Major but does a bit of spying too and is asked to team up with Gemma’s husband to spy full-time. That endeavor got them captured and Gemma’s husband is killed and Burke tortured. Burke and Gemma’s story is packed with drama, humor, spice, action, suspense and intrigue. I enjoyed reading To Tame A Rogue and look forward to reading more from Alexa Aston. To Tame A Rogue is book 2 of the Soldiers and Soulmates Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
All I can say is wow! I love stories during Napoleon’war and this one is a great one. Burke and Gem left me breathless, frustrated, scared and in the end so happy.
Facing a marriage to a gentleman in his seventies Lady Gemma Barton is desperate and she begs her childhood friend Robert Covington to marry her. Burke Nicholson serves a soldier and spy, using his charisma and charm to gather intelligence. He feels guilty and responsible for his partner Rob was death. He’s sent home to heal and recuperate. Eventually he returns to London to continue his spy work. Much to his surprise he’s partnered with Gemma and tasked to find a group of traitors within the War Office. I love how the relationship builds out of mutual respect and attraction, Burke realizes Gemma’s life is in danger as they get closer to finding the traitor in the War Office. Can their feeling overcome can Burke ever forgive himself and can Gemma for give him for her husband’s death? A great story of loyalty, love and betrayal. An excellent story I loved and I voluntarily wrote a review.
Lady Gemma Barton was about to be married off to an old geyser of a Lord until she begged her best friend from childhood Rob to marry her to save her that fate. Unfortunately, she and Rob didn’t have the future she’d envisioned and Gemma was left a widow.
But, a bright young woman, Gemma began to work for Britain’s War Office in the fight against Napoleon. It’s during this task she meets Burke Nicholson, a former compatriot of her deceased husband, and now a cohort of hers in her employment.
Burke has long been a reputed ladies man, and used it to his best advantage. He has done this both personally and professionally. Now he’s “doing it” for God and country.
He and Gemma are given an assignment that will give them a chance to know each other better but also put them in danger. Thus begins a web of intrigue jeopardy, flirtation and romance.
This is a terrific story, read start to finish as it’s so difficult to put down. It’s the second in a series and I am really looking forward to the next. I highly recommend it.
Gemmas father is going to force her to marry a man twice her age. When she comes up with a plan to marry her childhood friend. After the marriage Rob goes off to war and Gemma helps his father who works for the war office.
Burke Nicholson is an intelligence officer and when something goes very wrong his partner gets killed and Burke blames himself. Severely injured Burke goes home and plans to meet with his partners widow and try to tell her that her husbands last thoughts were of her. When Burke goes to work for the war office he is pared with Gemma to take on a mission. Both Gemma and Burke are fighting an attraction they feel for each other. Burke is full of guilt for getting Rob killed and Gemma is feeling guilty for being attracted to a man who possibly got her husband killed.
Guilt can be a tremendous thing and Burke and Gemma will need to overcome it in order to find love. This is such a wonderful story. The second in this series although a stand alone book. I loved the first book and definitely loved this one! Definitely recommend reading this series! Can’t wait for the next one.
To Tame a Rogue by Alexa Aston was a heart-racing book centering around the war with France in the early 1800’s. Gemma called for her good, friend, Rob, Smythe, second son to the Earl of Covington, to come and bail her out of a situation, that situation being her impending marriage to Lord Willows, a man at least three times her age. The only way she could see her way out was Rob; he would marry her and save her from her doom. Rob readily agreed to this marriage of convenience and she was indeed saved. Two days after the wedding he was off to France and she went to live in the home of the Earl of Covington, where they quickly became fast friends. After observing Gemma, the earl came to recognize how bright she was and how mathematical her mind was and so he set her to decoding messages intercepted by the War Office, his employer. At the same time Rob, in France, is given an interesting assignment working with a much more experienced spy, Burke Nicholson, a charismatic and intelligent man who had an education, but nothing else as he was a younger son. For a while they were successful but eventually they got captured and Burke blamed himself. He didn’t know what mistake he had made, but he knew he had made one. They were tortured for days but neither of them gave up any information. Eventually Rob died from the torture just before they were rescued. Burke walked away a broken man with one less eye. Rob had given him a message for Gemma with his last breath and Burke was determined to deliver it.
This was a terrific spy novel as well as a love story. Burke came home to England and broken man and it was only after months living by himself in a remote hunting lodge that he felt recovered. His old life was gone, as was his old, rakish personality. He felt the need to see how he could help, now that he was recovered. Gemma, was still secretly working for the War Office, but without her father-in-law’s guidance as he had died shortly after he had received word of Rob’s death. Gemma was the dowager countess since, shortly before the death of her father-in-law, her brother-in-law had drunkenly walked in front of a moving carriage. She was fortunate that she had not money worries and had a home of her own, since the earldom had passed to a cousin upon Rob’s death. She was a strong and intelligent character, and was no one’s fool. She made the perfect partner for Burke Nicholson in attempting to discover who was leaking information from the War Office to the French. This was a terrific book, I seriously enjoyed in, including the appearance of old friends of Burke: Grey and Charlotte Crampton from the previous book, To Heal and Earl. I recommend this book as a lovely, but not mindless, romance.
I received a free ARC of To Tame a Rogue from Dragonblade in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions and interpretations contained herein are solely my own.
Lady Gemma Barton needs to persuade her best friend to marry her before her father marries her off to an old man. The problem is her friend doesn’t love her that way and is about to leave for rhe war.
Mr Burke Nicholson works as a spy for the British . He and his partner are in very perilous conditions.
This is a very exciting story, full of danger and intrigue. Working as a spy is always dangerous, but could it be even more so in London than on the continent?? Our brave and very clever heroine is nothing like the Lady most of the “ton” believe her to be. Our roguish hero has given a lot for his country’s war effort. Has he got the strength to give more??
Although this is part of a series you can easily read it on it’s own. You will meet some characters from the previous book but not enough to spoil it if you haven’t read it yet.
I loved every page.
Lady Gemma Barton has just discovered that her father is going to wed her off to an ancient peer; just to be rid of her. After her discovery, Gemma talks her best friend, Rob, into marrying her. Rob then ships off to fight Bonaparte in the Peninsular War. Burke Nicholson serves the war effort as a spy. He enjoys the lifestyle and soon becomes friends with Rob. The two of them are sent on a mission where they are caught and tortured. Rescue comes late for Rob and Burke carries the weight of his death with him consistently. Gemma had moved in with Rob’s father and starts working with him in the war department. He treats her with kindness, and he becomes the Father of her Heart. Alexa Aston has provided a wonderful mystery, plenty of spies and an unexpected villain. I enjoyed this book very much and kept turning the pages until the end.
