A New York Times Bestseller
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn comes the story of Eloise Bridgerton, in the fifth of her beloved Regency-set novels featuring the charming, powerful Bridgerton family, now a series created by Shondaland for Netflix.
ELOISE’S STORY
Sir Phillip knew that Eloise Bridgerton was a spinster, and so he’d proposed, figuring that she’d be homely and … that Eloise Bridgerton was a spinster, and so he’d proposed, figuring that she’d be homely and unassuming, and more than a little desperate for an offer of marriage. Except . . . she wasn’t. The beautiful woman on his doorstep was anything but quiet, and when she stopped talking long enough to close her mouth, all he wanted to do was kiss her . . . and more.
Did he think she was mad? Eloise Bridgerton couldn’t marry a man she had never met! But then she started thinking . . . and wondering . . . and before she knew it, she was in a hired carriage in the middle of the night, on her way to meet the man she hoped might be her perfect match. Except . . . he wasn’t. Her perfect husband wouldn’t be so moody and ill-mannered, and while Phillip was certainly handsome, he was a large brute of a man, rough and rugged, and totally unlike the London gentlemen vying for her hand. But when he smiled . . . and when he kissed her . . . the rest of the world simply fell away, and she couldn’t help but wonder . . . could this imperfect man be perfect for her?

Eloise is so pivotal in the first season of Bridgerton, that I was really looking forward to her love story and match. Everything though came as a total surprise and thrilled me to the very end. The book made me laugh, love, and even cry at some point or another. The timelines of these books starts to get a little wonky since the courtship of Eloise and Sir Philip is over the course of a year, but picks up at the epilogue of Colin’s story. At first, we wonder why Eloise always has inkstains on her hands (could she be Whistledown?), but eventually learn she truly loves penning letters to any one and everyone possible. Eloise is witty, intelligent, brazen, and bold – everything a powerful female main character should be. Sir Philip is just such a lost man from the beginning. From the loss of his wife to how to raise children alone as a widower in the time period, it pulls on your heartstrings. And it’s so refreshing to read how Eloise swoops in to save him and his family completely instead of the strong commanding male lead. I have not enjoyed the books as much as the show, but this one was nothing shy of perfect. I really can’t stop gushing about this installment of Bridgerton and absolutely canNOT wait to see it come to life on the big screen.
4 1/2 stars. I loved Eloise’s story.
I absolutely loved Eloise’s story with her Sir Philip. It wasn’t anything like the other books with their focus on the ton and society and all that. This book was simpler, subtler, and somehow more beautiful and poetic for it. I loved that Eloise took her fate into her own hands snd I loved seeing how her presence changed Sir Philip and the children for the better. Just beautifully and heartbreakingly good storytelling.
Book 26 towards my goal of 240! 4/5 stars for this Regency Romance read! So far, Eloise has been my least favorite Bridgerton book, but still so good! Absolutely loving this series! Such great characters! Cannot wait to see what happens in the next book! Can’t recommend this series enough!
After finishing the Bridgerton season on Netflix, I couldn’t help revisiting my favorite Bridgerton novel, especially with some of the teasing moments in the final episode. While this novel shows its age in some of the gender norms and language excusing sexism, overall I was pleased with how it held up. Phillip is still an iconic grumpy hero in the best way possible, and Eloise is as impulsive as ever. I still haven’t read some of the earlier books in the Bridgerton series, so my enjoyment was definitely improved by watching the show and getting a sense for her brother’s characters. I really really hope the series has enough seasons for this book to get a turn, since it would be a true delight to see it done justice in film.
Do you prefer the shy romantic or the sexy devil characters?

Book 5 and 6 on the series
Rating:5/5
Eloise is amazing, I knew she was going to end up doing something crazy and I was right. I loved her book and Phillip was without even trying a very shy and romantic sort of fellow. Perfect match I tell you.
Now, now on When He was Wicked we get to finally meet Franchesca. She’s pretty cool and down to earth. Some things happened and she ends of entangled with Michael who is the sexiest rascal ever. I adore him.
I don’t know if I like him more than Simon though but pretty close.
So the fifth book was good but the sixth was perfection. I loved it.
Now on to the last two.
I will say some parts of this book was slow, but I also thought how some things were funny especially with Philips children Oliver and Amanda. The beginning was really sad. I think this is the darkest prologue of them all so far. I can’t help but moving on to the last half of this series, is that I find my interest not a high as I was with the first 4 because we saw much of the elder siblings interact with each other and barely heard much on the last 4 siblings. With Francesa’s book being next its almost as if this is the first I will hear her speak! I still look forward to reading the series though. Julia has way of surprising me.
After nearly a year of correspondence, Sir Phillip Crane decided there could be no downside to proposing to spinster Eloise Bridgerton. He assumed she’d be desperate and thrilled to marry and help him manage his mischievous children. With this in mind, Phillip invited Eloise to visit his home meet him in person in order to determine if they’ll suit. Only, the woman who arrived unannounced on his doorstep, without accepting his invitation, is none of those things. She’s beautiful and she never ceases speaking, but she ignites a desire Phillip hasn’t felt in years.
Eloise Bridgerton knows she’d be foolish to accept an offer of marriage from a man she’s never met in person, but she finds herself thinking and wondering what if…and then hying off to the countryside in the middle of the night, hoping to find her love match at last. But Phillip is brooding, and his manners are rough, even if he is handsome. Yet, when she spends more time with him, the connection she feels is undeniable and leaves her wondering if this difficult man could in fact be her perfect match.
I loved this book. Phillip was broody and a bit clueless, but in the best possible way and his vulnerability when it came was so emotional and sincere, it gave me all the feels. Eloise’s sunny disposition was the perfect foil for Phillip and just what he needed to bring him back to life. His children were utter hellions, but they wound up being charming in the end and Eloise’s expert handling of their antics injected some much-needed humor into what could’ve otherwise become a heavy book. I also greatly enjoyed the sibling camaraderie Phillip developed with Eloise’s brothers and it was so endearing to see Phillip learning to lighten up, enjoy life, and to give and receive affection. Even with his initial grumpiness, Phillip wound up being nearly everything I want in a hero. This was a whirlwind, unconventional courtship and a rather odd match, but I loved these two as a couple, I enjoyed the narration, and I think this is my new favorite Bridgerton book.
I just discovered these books in 2020, when I read that they were being turned into a Netflix series. I love historical fiction so I am reading them. For the most part they are great. This was one of the better ones. The plot was a slow burn but the story was captivating. The characters were well written and lovable. A great addition to the series. Can’t wait to read the next one!
Love this book! I think it’s my favorite in Quinn’s Bridgerton Series, which is saying something. It’s a precious and emotional read.
This book was a lot of fun laughed and had a great time
I loved this story…and the fish in the bed!
I loved this one too. Eloise Bridgerton has been a great character throughout the series so to see her get the spotlight was most entertaining. I loved who Julia Quinn chose to court Eloise and the situation in which she thrust this formidable character into right from the start. It was different than the rest yet still held that awesomely hilarious and reverent tone to the story that has become synonymous to me with the Bridgerton series.
Great series
Eloise Bridgerton at twenty eight was still unwed , and truly didn’t care till her best friend married her brother Colin. Upon writing letters to a Sir. Phillip he ask her to visit and possibly wed if they suit. So she fled in the night leaving only a note to her mom. Upon her arrival which was unexpected since she didn’t respond back to his invite she meets a family who needs the famous Bridgerton touch.
Sir .Phillip widowed with twin kids , decides a letter from a cousin to his late wife. Upon writing her for a year he decides maybe they could suit as husband and wife and invites her to his home. She never responds but just shows up at his door , she was not what he expected but more. Upon her few days there her brothers all four show up and now marriage wasn’t a question and Eloise now feels they might not suit because why wed someone just out of command.
Great story , great series . Funny banter among the siblings and their soon to be in laws. You can’t get enough of the Bridgertons , they seem so real and most of all they make you fall in love them all.
