Kendra and her friends decide to join a magical girl team competition. They’ll definitely win, right? They’re the greatest team there.Nope.They lose. But there’s something odd about the first place winners. There’s a hidden secret that might tear the whole team apart . . .. . . and an unknown villain who wants to destroy them.
I absolutely love this prologue! If you have been reading this series, this is a great little short to give you a little look into Kendra’s team before the events in book one happen, but if you haven’t read anything it’s also a great starting point. I also enjoyed the look into another magical girl team, which had one heck of a twist. It always amazes me how much world and character building there is in these short books! This was a great story and I would love to read more stories diving straight into other magical girl lives.
To Prevent First Place is the prologue to the Magical Mayhem series. These stories are very quick reads for those who enjoy reading young adult fantasy books with a good dose of humor.
I voluntarily received and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

Oh, What a Wonderful Twist!
Author Emily Martha Sorensen employs brevity as an art form and wields snarky humor like a magical girl talisman. I find myself blithely accepting “good” and “evil” without questioning WHY the villains are attacking willy nilly, nor what they seek. In this brief prologue to her “Magical Girl” series we get some background on Queen Hemlock with a decidedly clever twist.
What a terrific quick read with a strong affirmation of being true to yourself despite what those around you think.

Take three young ladies, insert an interesting idea for an extracurricular event, result = instant argument over top billing. The reasoning behind their individual beliefs of superiority. Interesting, very, very interesting.
{The easiest way would be alternate who s in the center spot}. Yes, I know I m male and don t understand females. Not really sure I really want to either, what with the petty bickering}.
They came in sixth and we hear the principal character explaining the winning team s powers. Only to find out that their arch nemesis is also fighting them. {Maybe competing can be a good thing, if they end up working as a team when fighting. With no bickering over who s who in/on the team.
Interesting to see how she winning “team” actually are just sidekicks to the one. All the powers went to the one and none to the rest.
Then we find one actually is an imposter and a better fighter than the two. Even though she s a construction -a humunculus- and on the side of evil.
Who “wakes up”, changes sides, and seems to have a bright future ahead of her.

Good series especially for young girls. If you’re on a team do you work together to achieve a goal or do you have your own agenda? It’s a question even adults may want to answer themselves as I believe we have all found
ourselves in that situation. There are consequences for sure based on what we do.
I found this book to be an enjoyable read even though science fiction is my preferred genre. I am looking forward to the reading the rest of them.
The author obviously loves characters and provides a tale full of unpredictable twists.
