This was a super fun book with characters I really rooted for.
What a great book!
I won this book at a Facebook party, and what a charmer it is! Starting with the cover, which is gorgeous, I was drawn in by it and the blurb. The author’s descriptions of scenes, emotions, and romance kept me turning page after page. “The moon was rising, the horns of its crescents seeming to snag on the day’s last delicate clouds.” I found that line, and many others, beautiful. How could I stop reading? I couldn’t.
The characters were drawn so well, I felt like I was in the story with them. Sarah is young, relatively innocent, yet she can take care of herself. She doesn’t need the hero to take care of her. I like independent heroines who are still true to the time period. Sarah is one such character.
I also liked St.John. He was swoon-worthy, yet flawed, and his recognition of his flaw is well-drawn. He discovered and rectified it over time, instead of it happening overnight. It was unusual to have a blond hero, but it worked for me. I could visualize St. John very well.
I liked the addition of a mystery, and the denouement worked well for me. I was satisfied with the ending, and am eager to read the next book in the series.
If you enjoy Regency books that are set outside of a ballroom (I loved the seaside town setting and additional characters of this book), then I recommend To Kiss a Thief.
Sarah Pevensey daughter of a rich Bristol merchant entered an arranged marriage to St. John Sutcliffe, Viscount Fairfax & she fell in love with him straightaway. But almost before it began, the wedding ended in a scandal that shocked London society. Sarah had a couple of glasses of wine at their ball; she then began to feel ill after hearing Eliza & her husband & was then found in a compromising situation. Things only got worse when the Sutcliff sapphire necklace was missing from around her neck. Accused of being a jewel thief, Sarah fled to a small fishing village to rebuild her life. Sarah’s mother in law helped her escape but then a body was found in the Thames & everyone thought Sarah had died
The last time St. John saw his new wife, she was nestled in the lap of a soldier, Captain Brice, dishevelled, and no longer in possession of his family’s heirloom sapphire necklace. Now, three years later, he has returned to England after fleeing to Antigua following his dual with Captain Brice & has located Sarah and is determined she pay for her crimes. But the woman he finds is far from what he expected. Humble and hardworking, Sarah has nothing to hide from her husband.
A very good debut novel., & story of second chances & lots of misunderstandings. I could have shaken both St John & Sarah at times as it was obvious to everyone but themselves how they felt.
The characters were well rounded & the pace of the book is good, I certainly kept turning the pages. Although the ending wasn’t rushed I felt there were still quite a few loose ends & not everyone got their just desserts
