A beautifully crafted graphic novel adaptation of Harper Lee’s beloved, Pulitzer prize–winning American classic.“Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”A haunting portrait of race and class, innocence and injustice, hypocrisy and heroism, tradition and transformation in the Deep South of the 1930s, Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird … To Kill a Mockingbird remains as important today as it was upon its initial publication in 1960, during the turbulent years of the Civil Rights movement.
Now, this most beloved and acclaimed novel is reborn for a new age as a gorgeous graphic novel. Scout, Gem, Boo Radley, Atticus Finch, and the small town of Maycomb, Alabama, are all captured in vivid and moving illustrations by artist Fred Fordham.
Enduring in vision, Harper Lee’s timeless novel illuminates the complexities of human nature and the depths of the human heart with humor, unwavering honesty, and a tender, nostalgic beauty. Lifetime admirers and new readers alike will be touched by this special visual edition that joins the ranks of the graphic novel adaptations of A Wrinkle in Time and The Alchemist.

One of my all time favorites.
One of the very best of the high school reading requirements books ever
It’s my favorite book of all time and I’ve read a lot.
read this years ago and again later on. this story will stay wit you forever, could even change the way you view the world around you.
A classic. I’ve read this book several times.
I have read this novel four times, still find it inspiring . and given our current state of race relations I would recommend it to anyone who hasn’t read it. Maybe you will be looking for the Mockingbirds in your world. I couldn’t recommend a book any more than I would this one.
I am too young to recall a debate over the novel vs. film adaptation of Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” but will assume that there was one; there always is. I DO remember some discussion over a stage adaptation that appeared on Broadway in 2018, however. The explanation was simple – each storytelling medium had its own strengths and weaknesses which needed to be considered when using it to tell a shared story.
In the same approximate timeframe as the play, Fred Fordham released “To Kill a Mockingbird” as a graphic novel, taking on both the responsibility for adapting the novel into graphic form, and then illustrating it.
I cannot evaluate the play, as I have never seen it and it is not the purpose of this review. However, having gone through Mr. Fordham’s adaption, I found it to be a loyal re-telling of the novel as Ms. Lee wrote it. This is both very good – AND quite disappointing. Listening to an interview with Jeff Daniels, who recreated the role of Atticus Finch on Broadway, he described how different media require different techniques to tell the same story. I didn’t get a feel that anything made the graphic novel “special”; it was simply a re-telling with pictures and word balloons. Mr. Fordham did eliminate the distinct boxes between panel drawings and he did occasionally explode a picture to larger size for dramatic effect. However, I did not feel that he took full advantage of the techniques available via the comic / graphic novel mechanism to make the story both Ms. Lee’s and HIS.
I am not saying avoid this book, it is a nice telling of the tale. BUT I am not saying rush out and get it and move it to the top of your “To Be Read” list, either, especially if you’ve already read the novel or seen the movie. (On the other hand, if you’re rushed to do a high school book report on the novel and put off reading it until the last minute, this book may be your saving grace.)
RATING: 3 ½ stars, rounded down to 3 stars where ½ stars are not permitted.
Love this book!
One of my favorites!!!
A book that should impact us all for ages.
This may be one of the best books of all times. The characters are finely written, complicated, unique and significant. The story is important for its insight into the very worst and the very best of mankind and the beauty and simplicity of love and integrity.
Hands down, my favorite book of all time
Excellent
I have read it twice and could read it over and over again. Atticus Finch was the perfect father, neighbor, lawyer. It takes us back to a simpler time but one fraught with prejudices and hate.
One of my top three favorite books. Has a deeper meaning for me as a Southerner. Atticus is certainly to be respected for his actions and I understand those he did in Go Set A Watchman
The graphic novel was wonderful addition to the book for younger readers to see the story come to life.
One of the best books ever!
Favorite book ever
A must read! I shouldn’t have waited so long to read this book.
contived and inauthentic
