This story starts out with Sabine being tracked then attacked. She is then rescued by a stranger who is curious to her. Through this story we learn more about this stranger, 2 demon brothers and 1 faithful protector. This story starts slowly as you learn of the main characters then goes along at a nice clip from there on. I enjoyed the story but felt her character could have been portrayed a bit stronger. I will read the next book in this series to see what happens next. I was given a free copy of this book at my request and this is my honest review.
The premise to this book is what drew me in but what kept me was the world building and the mystery behind what was happening.
It starts off with Sabine, a woman with Fae powers, being ambushed and a stranger coming to her aid. Right place, right time kind of situation. Malek, said stranger, is then gifted a “mark” from Sabine which means she owes him a favor, if you will. Her demon protectors, Bane and Dax, aren’t too happy with the situation, as they are possessive over Sabine, however they cannot do anything about it unless they want to unleash her wrath upon them.
The relationship between her and the demons has Malek wondering what it is about Sabine that allows this strange “friendship” to work. While he is wondering that, he also has come to Akros for another reason, he is looking for artifacts and believes Sabine can be the one to help him.
Sabine is curious by nature so she is intrigued by Malek and trying to figure out where his power comes from. Somewhere along the line they end up in a situation where they are all better off helping one another while staying cautious at the same time.
This book is definitely a slow burn in all aspects but that is something that I prefer. I don’t like when a book shows their cards early in the game. With that being said, it can seem a bit “slow”, it is a great and easy read. The writing is excellent with a perfect balance of details and story entwined.
One last thing…I LOVED the chapter header designs! Beautiful!

To Kill a Fae is Book 1 in the The Dragon Portal Series. It was a fantastic way to bring readers in and kick off a new and exciting series. The book blends fantasy, action and drama together in one thrilling and exciting adventure.
Sabine is on the run. She’s trying her best to remain under the radar and evade her pursuers. Even though Sabine is hiding under a glamour she is still found (obviously, or else why would there be a story) and has an unexpected savior.
Just because she gets saved please don’t mistake her or a damsel in distress. Sabine is a kick butt, no nonsense badass. All the characters are well written and dynamic. The relationships between some are explained to the readers as they get further into the story. I fond the plot moved quickly and kept me engaged. I was entertained from start to finish and can’t wait for Book 2.

To say I enjoyed this book would be a massive understatement. From the very first page, I was captivated by the intrigue of hidden fae, overhanded demons, and a wealth of other magical creatures that all worked to keep Sabine and her secret safe. The author has such a way with words that I wasn’t reading the story, I was deep on the streets beside Sabine and Malek as they ran through the dark of night.
I’m excited to see how the story unfolds from this point forward, and eager to see how the tensions between our characters settle. Readers who enjoy fantasy stories like Throne of Glass would most definitely enjoy reading this one.
I wanted to like this book but several tries unfortunately left me only completing the first chapter. None of it was engaging: characters, setting, etc. It’s a shame it didn’t work out; I was immersed by this author’s Omni Towers series because you could lose yourself in those books.
This was an interesting PNR story. There was intrigue, relationships, and romance. There was a full cast of paranormal characters including , fae, demons, dragons, fairies and magic. The story center around Sabine and the friends that she surrounds herself with. It took me a while to warm up to the story but by mid book I was invested to see how it all played out.
This first book in The Dragon Portal series by Jamie A Waters took the reader on a journey through the thoughts and decisions of Sabine as to whom of the two demons and the dragon she could trust and how much of her secrets to divulge to them. The book delved into the realms of Fae and human, and how they interacted with each other as all the main characters, Bane, Dax, Malek, and Sabine, attempted to stay alive from their various hunters and persecutors. It was also a developing love story that I’m certain will either grow further or not in book 2 of the series. This is a voluntary review of this book through an ARC from Hidden Gems Books.
Our heroine is hiding from her past, trying to avoid notice, but those hunting her are relentless and she has obligations.
This is the first book in the series so a fine place to start.
This is an urban fantasy story featuring the entire gamut of paranormal and fantasy creatures, which gives us a lot to work with and our author does just that. The story is well written and easy to read, but the setting is complex and detailed, with lots of elements only hinted at, leaving you anxious to know more. Similarly, the characters have hidden depths and I found myself constantly looking for hints to the past. Which leaves plenty of material for the plot to weave together in a complex tapestry which drew me in from the start and didn’t let go. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and look forward to learning more about the characters and setting in future installments.
Highly recommended.

This is the 2nd book I’ve read written by Jamie A. Waters; she has done a great job at writing a good book; I can’t wait to read more of her books.
The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.
I loved the chemistry between the characters.

Sabine is one of the Fae. She was falsely accused of murder, and has spent the last ten years of her life living in the city of Akros amidst the humans, and other magical races trapped there after the portal closed.
Fascinating, compelling, and wonderfully well written characters racing against time to prevent the return of the old gods, and another devastating war. Magic, mayhem, exciting action, and plenty of plot twists that kept me guessing. Fantastic book, I loved it!

Fun and different fantasy
I really enjoyed this well-told adventure about Sabine, Malek, and the others from Akros. The world-building was creative and solid, the characters had complex motivations and interactions, and the plotting was interesting. There were a number of different peoples/races in this world, and some of them are not quite the ‘traditional’ fantasy version of those people, which makes the book even more different and fun!
This isn’t a book where you learn everything at the beginning, the author definitely parcels out the information as you go. So, sometimes you might not understand exactly what’s going on until you get more info. It took me a few chapters to get into the book all the way, but by the time it finished I definitely wanted to continue and went looking for book 2, only to find it hasn’t been published yet! Looking forward to it!
This was a good introduction to a new world filled with magic. I found Sabine a really interesting character who had complicated secrets. Her relationship with the demon brothers was fun to read about, especially the games she has to play with Dax. Captain Malek started off really interesting but by the end he felt kind of one dimensional. Maybe he was a little too nice for my taste? He is still my favorite romantic prospect for Sabine. The magic system in this book is pretty cool and I’m interested to see how it will develop as the series continues. If you’re a fan of fantasy books with some romance, this is a great read!

Love the mystery and intrigue!
“To Kill A Fae” is a well-written fast-paced, and intriguingly twisted tale with a strong storyline plot, and amazingly entertaining characters that keep you invested in this mystery until the last page.

Jamie A. Waters blew my expectations out of the water with her imagination and stunning character dynamics. I was immediately entranced with the bond shared between Sabine, a Fae in hiding, and the two demon brothers, Dax and Bane. The details of their peculiar relationship were slowly revealed throughout the book, and I have to say: I LOVE THEM. I can’t tell you what direction the author plans to take with Dax and Bane, but I really, really hope one (or both) can have some sort of romantic relationship with Sabine. The way they protect and take care of each other is so real and raw and just… *sigh*.
I know, I know. “But what about Malkin?” one might ask. WELL, I just wasn’t feeling it with him. Yes, he’s a great guy, he’s super duper sweet, but my heart yearns the most for Dax because he challenges Sabine in a way that had my heart racing!
I’m also very interested to see what happens with the Wild Hunt and for Sabine’s father and brother to make an appearance in book two.
She managed to get away but they are still after her. She has been able to stay hidden but all her plans are about to hit the fan when a stranger appears. She can not stay away from him. She owes a debt and she must help but in doing so she will reveal herself. What will she do? Will she help? What will happen when they find her? See how she gets on

To Kill a Fae (The Dragon Portal Book 1) by Jamie A. Waters. I’m just going to start this review with wow, Because honestly no words will do this story justice. I’m a person that truly has to be in the mood for a fantasy type story but from the description I hoped right in and was taken on quite the adventure. The characters are so well written and you can’t help but get drawn into their world. I was constantly finding myself trying to read faster so I could see what happens while also not wanting it to end. The author takes readers to a whole new world and I loved it. I can’t wait for more! Five stars all the way and highly recommend!

5 Star
To Kill a Fae (The Dragon Portal Book 1) by Jamie A. Waters is a wonderfully written fantasy book that once I started reading I couldn’t put it down till the end. I was drawn in from the beginning and found myself lost in the pages. Sabine has been hiding in the city among humans. Not very many know what or who she really is ,that is until s stranger comes to town. He seems very intriguing but also knows way to much about her kind. What does her future hold? Find out what happens next in this must read. I can’t wait to read more from this Author
This book is captivating with its intricate and diverse characters. The author does a wonderful job building the fantasy world and balancing several different personalities and different species of beings. The intrigue and gradual development of plot details and secrets ensures that the story is not predictable, and keeps you interested and reading to see what will happen next. It is truly a great introduction to a new world and a new series.
To Kill a Fae (The Dragon Portal Book 1) by Jamie A. Waters – 4 stars
