It is rare for a book to start off with a bang, usually there is an “introduction ” into the characters and a description of surroundings to set the plot and tone, which can be tedious. This book took me totally by surprise, the author dove in feet first and immediately got me captured. It’s so refreshing to start a book where the heroine is in danger from the very beginning and the outcome of the imminent danger is in the very first chapter! Sabine is a really cool character, especially as one gets to understand immediately that she’s a magical being. I loved the fact that she has demon brothers as protectors, it is a wonderful twist. The magic is awesome, the banter between them is heartfelt and at times, humorous. Enter a new magical being, a ship’s captain, with secrets of his own and the magnetism between Sabine and Malek is tangable. When the truth comes out of who and what Malek is, The brothers immediately see him as a threat. Sabine is not so sure, after all, Malek has saved her on a few occassions. And now, being hunted by her family, Sabine has to flee once again. It is a fast paced story, filled with lots of action, totally gripping, I had a hard time putting it down. This book is my 1st by this author and now I feel compelling to read everything she has written!
I received this book for free in return for an honest review

To Kill a Fae (The Dragon Portal Book 1)
By: Jamie A. Waters
5 out of 5 stars
The story To Kill a Fae (The Dragon Portal Book 1) by Jamie A. Waters is an amazing fantasy book. It pulls you in right from the beginning and didn’t let me go until I had read the final page. The story has action, danger, mystery, and magic. It takes you on a journey that will have you wondering what is going to happen next. I loved reading about Sabine. She is a young woman who is intelligent, beautiful, independent, and stubborn. She needs to keep her head down and stay hidden. Never let anyone know who she really is. Those plans soon begin to fall apart. Sabine meets a handsome and charming stranger who has arrived in the city. Both feel a pull and are drawn to each other. What does the future hold for Sabine and the stranger? Will she outsmart the ones that are hunting her? Read this book to find out. This story will have you believing in magic and other creatures such as the Fae. The book does a wonderful job in world-building. I loved reading about the legends and stories that are told. The story is written in such a way that I felt like I was right there with the characters. Don’t miss out on a wonderful story with amazing characters. I highly recommend reading it.

This is a book full of magic, adventure and love. Mostly the love you feel for your friends, who become your family.
I try to save the 5 stars for my favorite books ever and it’s almost impossible that I give them to a book 1 in a saga as there’s so much more left to know. This is the only reason I gave this book 4 stars, although it’s probably around 4.5.
For me it is totally recommendable, and I can’t wait to read the second part.
Being engrossed in this book was like being under a spell; I found myself completely enthralled by the time the first chapter ended. Any time I stepped away, I caught myself lost in my head, wondering what everyone was up to or just processing.
I guess the book’s on the bigger side, but I breezed right through it and wish there was more. It’s fast-paced and with magical creatures, demons, etc. living among humans it still works for plausibility, really. Nothing’s left vague, no shortcuts were taken here. Everything’s well-explained and in a way that makes sense. Amazingly, there’s even originality. Character development, scene-setting and overall story are completely brilliant.
I am in awe.
5 stars – and only because this site won’t let me give more.
I was fortunate to receive a ARC of this book. Awesome beginning to what looks like an amazing series. I am really looking forward to more adventures with these fabulous characters!
This is a new genre for author Jamie A. Waters, but she hit it square on with the very first page. Whew! So much intrigue and excitement starting with the first few lines. I absolutely loved the vast assortment of characters, especially Sabine with her kick-ass attitude, but with a soft side as well. No one… I mean NO ONE messes with Sabine and gets away with it. Add in the handsome and charismatic captain of a smuggler’s ship, with secrets of his own, and you have a dynamic duo that you seriously hope will get together. So much chemistry! There are demons, witches, pixie’s, a goblin and more. All have very unique characteristics set in a world that only Ms. Waters could have created. It was like watching a movie playing in my head as I read! At times, I was sitting on the edge of my seat and cringing and at other times I was smiling and out-right laughing.
Who is trying to have Sabine killed? And what is her connection to Dax and Bane, the two demon brothers? As much as I want to, I can’t give away any spoilers. So you’ll just have to pick up the book yourself and read it. This could almost be read as a stand-alone, but you will be happy to know that Books 2, 3, 4 and 5 are already in the works. I, for one, cannot wait! I read this one in one day. Could not put it down!
Really good fantasy lead with interesting characters. I bought the rest of the books in the series.
Loved it and couldn’t put it down. Great world building, great characters and a super exciting story.
This is Book 1 in The Dragon Portal series by Jamie A Waters and I can wait for more.
Sabine is kick ass with some interesting powers, you find out the source of these as the journey goes on.
Everyone is enamoured with Sabine, (including me) she has some pretty powerful friends. These include, demon brothers Dax and Bane, who you will love equally even though their character traits are polar opposite from each other. Then you have a powerful witch with a garden full of cute pixies. These are just a few of her allies but I saved the newest and best for last, Malic who is a ships captain who sailed into town and saved Sabine when she was ambushed and almost killed. Trust me you will love him. I’m telling you nothing about his story as it unfolds in the best possible way.
Sabine is the heart of this book, she is independent, kick ass and sassy and inspires loyalty from all.
The pace is perfect as is the mystery and suspense as you dont quite know what’s going on and it keeps you guessing and ultimately not wanting to put the book down. I’m being careful not to tell you too much in case I give any spoilers away. BUT,
If you love epic high fantasy romance then you will love this.
Absolutely a 5/5 without a doubt and onto the next in the series.
Good read, I enjoy Fae stories and this one was a good read for me. This is a great set up to a promising series!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book starts out with Sabine being followed by two men. She turns into an alley and realizes she is being herded. When Sabine is attacked by four men in a secluded place, she fights. When two men are down, Malek takes out one of the two men that are left while Sabine takes out the other. The rest of this story is just as exciting with lots of fighting and a couple of demons thrown in, but it ends in a cliffhanger. Highly recommended.
To Kill A Fae by Jamie A. Waters
This book is delicious! I was immediately drawn in and couldn’t put this book down!
Sabine is a fascinating, fierce and strong female MC that has the best sidekicks since Buffy! I absolutely adore Bane and Blossom. Dax loves hard in his own way and Sabine explains in the end why she treats him differently than her brother. I’m eager to see if he survives and continues his pursuit of Sabine in book 2. Malek is a hot addition that has an unmistakable magic flowing through him that Sabine is undeniably attracted to. They burn up the pages in the most innocent of ways, as of now, and I hope something not so innocent happens between them in book 2!
Dragons, people! This book has dragons, demons, witches, Fae, faeries and more!
You need to read this fast paced, action packed book with slow-burn romance.
Bravo, Jamie! What a beautifully written and effortlessly descriptive world that immediately transports the reader to face off with fierce predators, unwavering protectors, awe-inducing magic system and antagonists of epic proportions!

WOW. At first I thought there was a book before this that I had missed. It turns out that Jamie A. Waters reveals the history of the world and how things work in precious nuggets. I was constantly caught off guard by events. I highly recommend this book.
It was a really good book. I was intrigued from the get go. Great character building, suspense learning about the characters, and not knowing what’s going to happen next. I like my books to be a little faster paced but it never got boring. The characters were well developed. I read it front to back and I’m about to start the next one.
I received an ARC and I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.
To kill a fae was my first story by this author, and it will definitely not be my last. I actually found book 2 first and after reading a preview and learning it was book 2, I went in search of book 1. I am definitely not disappointed in that choice.
This story grabbed me from the first paragraph and didn’t let go until after reading the last page. I meant to just get a start on it before going to bed but I couldn’t put it down. Finally at 2:30am, I had finished. No regrets even though I had to get up at 6 am the next morning. I both want to read this story again and can’t wait to dive into book 2. It is a special story that you can return to and enjoy over and over again even when you already know what will happen.
The characters are well developed and the world feels epic. Most of the story takes place in a moderate sized port town, but we hear millennia of history and about different races and the towns they inhabit.
This story is slow burn, and it felt like the relationships developed naturally. There are conflicting personalities and they need to find a way to work together. Trusting the wrong person could be life ending.
I received an advance review copy of this story, and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This was an unexpected pleasant surprise. I really liked Sabine. I liked following her through this journey. I liked getting to know the side characters that were in her life. It’s been a while since I’ve read an urban fantasy where the relationship wasn’t front and center. I liked the change of pace. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Magic, Fae and the Wild Hunt, a dragon, crazy twists abs turns, action and a pretty neat tale. Jamie A. Waters’ To Kill a Fae (The Dragon Portal Book 1) is a fun ride.
4.2 Stars
Hearty fantasy
Magical races, great world building, complex characters and relationships, action, adventure, romance, secrets, quests.
I’m loving it!
Mainly 2 focus POVs, which i appreciate in stories for the extra dimension and contrast.
I was a little surprised that we have long-lived races, immortals. But the main female character, with some experiences and power already… is merely 26-ish years old. Like, we could’ve thrown on an extra decade or 3, right?! Emphasize the strength of protection and depth of danger involved here, at least. I could barely take this seriously as is!
And I’m ambivalent about the nigh-constant tugging and arguing between characters. Yes, basically everyone is too dangerous to tangle with: too many alphas. So there’s a lot of careful discussion of intent and offer. A LOT of negotiating. I like it but it slows things down sooo much!

The way this book opens is astounding. The pacing and poetic prose, the voice of the author shines through in the monologue of Sabine’s thoughts, and it’s all made so much richer still by the 3rd person limited POV it’s written in.
There’s a beauty in the darkness Sabine finds herself in; and a glowing enigma in the shadows of mystery that is Malek. The pacing and banter between Malek and Sabine is akin to a perfectly matched pair of dancers gliding and twirling across the floor in a heated tango.
Every word draws you deeper, every moment of action captures you ruthlessly to the next until you’re so deep into the book you can’t find your way back out and the world around you disappears.
If you like A.D. Winter, Megan Blackwood, Alison Rose, Jessica Feyden, Mary Fan, L.A. Pepper, or Stephanie Rowe, you will love this book!
The first book in this series is one of those books that starts strong, and continues to get better as you read. Several secrets are revealed as you read – a few I guessed, a couple I didn’t. Sabine has been living in Akros for over 10 years, hiding from the people that want to destroy her, her own family. With two demons, a witch, a pixie, a beastmaster and a dragon shifter as her allies, she will need them all and their special abilities to get out alive.
Sabine is a character that is powerful, but cares about the few people she’s let into her inner sanctum. There are many facets to this book, the brewing romance between her and Malek, the bonds between herself and the demons and Balkin, between herself and the witch and pixie and even the orphans and children. The action sequences are flashy and the main arc within this series has my interest. Looking forward to book two.
This was a Excellent start to a new Series and was very well written. The main characters are quite varied in personality and traits. I listened to this on Authors-Direct and the Narrator did a great job of bring the story and characters to life. I will continue this Series in future Audible books.
