The classic bestselling war memoir by the most decorated American soldier in World War IIOriginally published in 1949, To Hell and Back was a smash bestseller for fourteen weeks and later became a major motion picture starring Audie Murphy as himself. More than fifty years later, this classic wartime memoir is just as gripping as it was then. Desperate to see action but rejected by both the … but rejected by both the marines and paratroopers because he was too short, Murphy eventually found a home with the infantry. He fought through campaigns in Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany. Although still under twenty-one years old on V-E Day, he was credited with having killed, captured, or wounded 240 Germans. He emerged from the war as America’s most decorated soldier, having received twenty-one medals, including our highest military decoration, the Congressional Medal of Honor. To Hell and Back is a powerfully real portrayal of American GI’s at war.

One man’s view of war. Made me appreciate what the greatest generation has provided for those that followed.
Not what I was expecting.
This is very well written. It contains graphic descriptions of warfare.
Want to know the life of a soldier. Read this book but don’t look for happy ever after.
Much better than the movie, which was good!
This was an excellent book, I was very impressed.
A reminder that many ordinary Americans were hero’s many who weren’t necessarily acknowledged, fighting for their brothers they had trained with. Most lost their lives. This hero just managed by fate to survive. What a debt we owe to this generation, who were all that stood between good and evil.
A true heroes story a required read if you want to begin to understand the Greatest Generation. A true story of one of the greatest heroes of WWII to modest to tell of the horror it truly was.
It is a surprisingly candid discussion about WWII and what combat was like. Quite a scary book in many ways. He started out as a young farm boy and ended up a well respected combat leader. Almost everyone around him is killed or maimed yet he carries on. Whoever was his ghost writer took the story and turned it into an erudite look at the war. Well worth reading.
This book helped me to understand the “why” of the men who died for our freedom.
I think Audie Murphy was indeed a war hero and a wonderful actor as well. I went to Arlington Cemetery and saw his gravesite. He was a brave American in every way
An realistic depiction of the horrors of war.
