This book was such an awesome surprise!! I picked it up and had a hard time putting it down! It is such an unusual concept. Brenna died in a very bad car accident, and she was dead for 6 minutes! But the EMTs worked hard to bring her back and she came back to life again. But now doomed to leave her body every time she fell asleep. She was amongst the dead, or the Faze as they called it. She sees doors, fairy doors and demon doors. It’s sooo cool. Not going to say too much.
I LOVED Brenna as a protagonist!! She is sooo very well written. She’s insecure, but puts on the “I don’t care” attitude. She’s sarcastic. She and her friend Aeria both tend to have that sarcastic attitude. I think everyone agrees that, Damon, “the Watcher” is one of the best characters!! Even some of the more minor side characters were really well written. I love books with well written, complex characters, and this one definitely fits the bill!!
Overall this is just such an awesome book!! I am REALLY looking forward to the next one!! There’s so much more that going to happen, i can’t wait!!! I VERY HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS!!! Definitely 5+ Stars!!!
The premise of To Dream is to Die was what drew me to request to review this book. After an accident, Brenna died for 6 minutes. Now alive, she enters “The Fade” while she’s asleep. There she’s merely a ghost of sorts, who isn’t wanted because she’s not truly dead. Determined to move on with her life, she heads off to college. Only one night while she’s roaming The Fade, someone sees her, and that scares her because no one alive can see her, until Damon.
Brenna is actually making friends for the first time in her life, first her friend Aeria, and then slowly, Damon, the man who can see her while she roams. Each time Brenna explores her new life at college while she’s asleep, she discovers something new, and she meets someone who sheds some more light on what exactly Brenna is, and what is going on around her. But things are getting dangerous, and it’s up to Brenna to fix what’s going on around campus and also to figure out what their president is up to.
I liked Brenna because she was strong and assertive, and that is my most favorite kind of main character. Watching her make essentially her first friend in Aeria was a lot of fun. I loved Aeria’s feisty personality. While sometimes I thought the duo was a little harsh on another girl in their dorm, Brenna’s first roommate Erica, I could see why they were.
If there were any downfalls to the book for me, it was that it ended on a cliffhanger, which I absolutely do not like. I thought sometimes the conversations got a little repetitive and long-winded.
Overall this was a fun read. The characters were good and so was the setting. I’m actually looking forward to learning more about The Fade and watching Brenna’s powers develop. A fun read.
Cool premise, boring execution. Also, the main character was quite annoying and unlikable.

This was a fantastic book. The main character (Brenna) is sarcastic and slightly obnoxious, for all the right reasons. She’s easy to relate to and easy to love. Just the right amount of dark humor (a lot), slightly unrealistic romance, and it seems like everyone in the book is just too damn pretty, but it was totally enjoyable.
The narrator was easy on the ears, and put enough emphasis on different voices to make it easy to discern who was speaking in the book. I would gladly listen to another book read by her.
Talk about a conversation starter…I was dead once now I can walk amongst the dead. To Dream is to Die is a uniquely entertaining “ghost” story. A young college freshman has to deal with going to classes and fitting in. It might be easier if she didn’t walk with the dead every night!
I am thoroughly intrigued by the concept and highly excited for the next book. I have a feeling Sophomore year is going to be twice the mess that was Freshman year. Good thing Brenna has backup!
