Finalist for the Inaugural Sue Grafton Memorial AwardMaisie Dobbs—one of the most complex and admirable characters in contemporary fiction (Richmond Times Dispatch)—faces danger and intrigue on the home front during World War II.During the months following Britain’s declaration of war on Germany, Maisie Dobbs investigates the disappearance of a young apprentice working on a hush-hush government … apprentice working on a hush-hush government contract. As news of the plight of thousands of soldiers stranded on the beaches of France is gradually revealed to the general public, and the threat of invasion rises, another young man beloved by Maisie makes a terrible decision that will change his life forever.
Maisie’s investigation leads her from the countryside of rural Hampshire to the web of wartime opportunism exploited by one of the London underworld’s most powerful men, in a case that serves as a reminder of the inextricable link between money and war. Yet when a final confrontation approaches, she must acknowledge the potential cost to her future—and the risk of destroying a dream she wants very much to become reality.

I’m a Huge fan of the author, Ms Winspear and have read a number of her Maisie Dobbs books. So much history! I love the way she puts her words together to form a fascinating story.
I’ve read everyone and they’re all FIVE STARS.
I love this series, especially the character Maisie Dobbs.
I found this book haunting, It seemed to stay with me even after I finished reading it, Some of the things made me think of myself. Some times I felt drained after reading it and I had to put it down for awhile, but I always picked it up and read it. In fact I have bought all of her books in that series.
Windspear brings the past to life. Her characters are complex but likeable
Great insight into WWII from the civilian point of view.
ANYTHING by Jacqueline Winspear is an automatic great read. Maisie and her crew are very memorable; wonderful historical novel.
She is my favorite author!!!
Once again the Maisie Dobbs series has kept me awake reading through the night. Jacqueline Winspear has created characters of mystery and soulfulness.
Same good story with same good characters.

This is an excellent addition to a wonderful series.

I enjoy her books and characters very much
A solid addition to the Maisie Dobbs series.
I think I have learned a lot about the early 30th century and the war from reading Winspear’s books. Maisie Dobbs is quite an inspiration for her time.
Not as good as others. Characters were not that interesting.
A look at life in England during the early days of WWII and the evacuation from Dunkirk. Maisie Dobbs, as always, manages to solve the mysteries with which she is presented. I simply could not put this book down.
I enjoyed the vivid descriptions of the time period.
I’ve enjoyed the whole serial very much. The characters are well developed.
