’m not sure I can even do this book justice. To say that I laughed out loud for the first three chapters is an understatement. Several people in my family were gathered around laughing with me even though they had no idea why. It was just that contagious. This was a delightful book. It had an unusual premise and somewhat broken characters which ultimately just made it all the more relatable and yet truly delightful. Rose is such an intriguing character and Carter is the ultimate heartthrob. Since I have already read book two, To Catch a Suitor, I know that I get to hear more of this duo throughout the series which makes my heart glad. In fact I just realized today that this book is coming out on Audible this week and I will most certainly be buying it to share with my daughters. I will absolutely continue to read through every book in the series and will continue to be on the lookout for anything written by Sarah Adams.
“A Beautiful, feisty woman. And he was in trouble.”
I found Sarah Adams, after reading her wonderful rom-com, The Match. When I saw how much I enjoyed The Match, I knew that I had to try out her Regency books. I really adore Regency books and this one was no different.
To Con a Gentleman was a laugh out loud rom-com set in the Regency era. I loved the witty humor and the story line. It was different from other Regency novels that I had read before, but it was still really enjoyable. In To Con a Gentleman, Carver is hiding and hurting. After the death of his fiance he has hidden himself in London away from the memories of his past and his family. Rose has been living as a con woman ever since her father died and she is content in where she is in life. But this last con has a way of changing everything for her.
Rose was an awesome heroine. She has had a hard life, but she did not let her get bitter. She was still kind and she cared for those who couldn’t care for themselves. She worked hard to make sure that children didn’t have to live on the streets. But she was also lonely, the kind of job she has makes it hard to get to know people. It was so funny reading about her trying to con Carver not knowing that she had the wrong man.
I loved that Rose was quick witted but she was also compassionate. I loved her conversations with Carver. They truly made me laugh. Carver was a sweet hero, he truly loved his family. I really enjoyed the interactions between Carver and his family especially with Robert. I love books that show families being families, it really reminded me of the way I interact with my family. Carver was hilarious as he missed with Rose, but he was still nice and considerate.
This was a great book, I didn’t know how it was going to end and it kept me interested the whole way. I loved To Con a Gentleman and I would definitely recommend it. Now I am off to read the second book, To Catch a Suitor!
A funny, complex, emotional read – I loved it from start to finish! It starts as a comedy of errors with Rose working a con. She has a sad history and her goal in doing her cons is unexpected and sweet! Her target is a wealthy man with whom everything goes awry from the get-go. They are funny together as they each try to trick the other. Their lies eventually are revealed! An entertaining story and, as always with Sarah, lots of laughter in the interaction between all the characters. On to her next book!!
Guess who is a new Sarah Adams fan?
I couldn’t put this book down! I was a little skeptical at first, unsure of how this plot could be pulled off. But my goodness, the author delivers! The romance is spot-on and I laughed out loud several times. My heart went out to Rose and Carver and I loved their development, even if they frustrated me at times (stubborn knuckleheads). In fact, the whole cast of characters were delightful. I’m anxiously diving into the next one!
I loved this book, To Con a Gentleman by Sarah Adams. Rose is a thief, a con artist and an orphaned woman unofficially adopted by a man called “Uncle Felix”. Uncle Felix sends Rose on a con mission to deceive a scam a gentleman/rake out of money. However, she knocks on the wrong door and finds herself is a situation that is highly unusual for her.
The is a story filled with emotions, grief, romance and family. It is a growing process for both Rose and Carver. I loved the interaction of all the characters. The plot and the characters are well developed. This is an enjoyable, clean Regency romance story that I received as an advanced reader and I always review every book that I read. I highly recommend this story.
Wonderful combination of deep emotion and wit. Loved this book!
What happens when you cross a thief with the son of a duke? You get a story that is fun, heartwarming, and emotional.
Rose is a con-woman out to capitalize on gentleman with far too much money. Her current target is a rake of the worst sort who took advantage of a lowly maid. Rose takes on the maids persona, but is given wrong information about where the dastardly Earl lives.
Carver is lost in his grief and doesn’t want to return home to the place where it happened. Much to his surprise Rose shows up at his door and he plays along knowing her story to be untrue and knowing she has the wrong man.
I could barely put this book down, but it took me a couple of nights because my eyes weren’t cooperating. I loved this story. I loved the characters. I loved the perspective on grief and loss and redemption.
I would recommend this book and read it again.
As a reader of hundreds of books in this genre, I can honestly say that To Con a Gentleman has a refreshingly unique premise. I loved the multiple layers that were carefully peeled back as I progressed through the story. For a change, the typical “brooding bad boy with a past” character is our flawed heroine, fallen for by our grieving hero, both of whom have vowed to never love again, for reasons which are skillfully revealed as the reader gets to know each character’s backstory. And all is not as it seems. For one thing, the experienced con woman gets conned. There are elements of the Robin Hood story as well, which brings to mind that sometimes “good” and “bad” definitions are determined by perspective and are not as simple as they seem. The story brought me to tears at times because the characters’ pain was so palpable. At other times, some scenes were so comical, I laughed out loud. I enjoyed the accepting and supportive family dynamics. The dialogue throughout the story was charming and amusing. An enjoyable read for anyone looking for something a little different in a Regency romance.
*I received an ARC of this book, and this voluntary review is my honest opinion.*
This was such a unique regency romance and I loved every page of it! Rose has grown up as a con artist by necessity but gets in way over her head when she accidentally mistakes Carver for her intended target. Sparks fly and hilarity ensues as they try to figure out how to deal with their growing feelings for each other while maintaining the charade. I laughed, I cried, and I even had to put the book down a few times because I was so emotionally involved I couldn’t bear to see something embarrassing or tragic happen to one of the main characters. Of course it only lasted a few minutes and I had to keep reading to find out if they got their happily ever after. Take a chance and pick this one up – you will be glad you did!
I had access to an advance copy of this book but am voluntarily leaving a review of my own opinions.
I really enjoyed this story!! It was so much fun. The characters were so awesome! It was an original story idea with heart and depth. I LOVED our heroine! Rose was just the kind of leading lady I wanted. Carver was just the man for her. I liked it from the very beginning and just loved it the more I read, until the end which was a little wonky. Ends are so hard sometimes! There is what you expect and think you’ll find and sometimes books aren’t what you think and this one was a little too much exactly what you expect. But it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of this story. This is a proper romance that is for 14 and up.
To Con a Gentleman is a wonderful addition to the regency genre scene. Full of great wit and humor throughout, I really enjoyed the premise of this book. Rose is a thief/con artist set on swindling a rakish earl out of his money. When she accidentally gets the wrong gentleman’s house, Rose gets pulled into Lord Carver’s ruse after he proposes to her catching her entirely off guard. After coming to an agreement, the two end up keeping up the charade only to let the chemistry flow for real between them. This was a fun novel and I am looking forward to more from this new author. I definitely recommend this book.
I received an advance reader copy, this review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
This was such a fun book! I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing. Carver and Rose were such strong characters they matched each other perfectly.
Both Rose and Carver had difficult things in their past that shaped them into who they were, and I loved that these things weren’t brushed over. They’re addressed and shown why and how those things affected them, and why they have difficulties from them.
I loved the banter between them, the whole family, and especially Uncle Felix.
I went from laughing to crying in this book, and I honestly didn’t want it to end.
Can’t wait to read more from Sarah Adams!
P.S. The paperback is lovely!
