Wow just wow!! You know how you have a set favorite author list,,,, throw it away and start all over with Rhett, you can’t get any better! Malcom Graves is my hero,, I cheer for him to get up and keep going the whole series!
Titanborn is the first book in a four book science fiction series. It follows the struggles between humans of Earth and our cousins on Saturn’s moon of Titan that have been separated from us for hundreds of years. Rhett C. Bruno has done a masterful job of creating a future world full of history and culture. The people of Titan, known as Ringers, have had three hundred years of progress without Earthbound humans, and have developed their own civilization. When these civilizations collide the action begins. The story in Titanborn is told from the viewpoint of Malcolm Graves, an aged collector whose job it that of an enforcer for a mega-corporation with business on Titan. Malcolm has a deep history that is revealed through flashbacks and encounters throughout the book. You get a real sense of who Malcolm is. Much like Malcolm, Bruno’s world is vast and is presented to the reader as it is relevant to the story. The more books in the series you read the more you learn about the people and places and you are drawn in as if it were your own history. The Audiobook was narrator by R.C. Bray. His deep, gravelly voice lends itself to adding a gritty atmosphere to the story. R.C. does a wonderful performance when giving different tones and speaking styles to different characters. You often know who is speaking before you are told. R.C.’s pacing is slow and precise. He speaks clearly and you can understand every word.
I couldn’t put it down. Exciting plot, intriguing characters and unexpected twists.
2019 BIBA™ Science Fiction Winner!
I have found over the years that, for me, reading science fiction is either hit or miss. And, this book was definitely a hit!
Malcolm Graves is a collector, getting paid as a bounty hunter for Pervenio Corp. He is in it for the credits and doesn’t mind who he has to kill to get the job done. After a high-profile bombing by someone from Titan, he is reluctantly partnered with an enhanced young man named Zhaff. Since Malcolm has always worked alone, he is not too happy about the partnership.
This book is so much more than just sci-fi/dystopian fiction. By the end of the book, I had grown to care about the characters on both sides of this evolving revolution. There is plenty of action, but plenty of emotion is involved as well. There are some humorous moments as Malcolm and Zhaff work together and the author does an excellent job in developing the characters.
I have to say that I was almost in tears by the end. Tough choices have to be made, but who will survive? This book has lots of elements with other memorable sci-fi stories, but it also has unique twists that caught me off guard.
The narrator does a wonderful job and really adds a lot to the listener’s enjoyment of the book. I will definitely be looking for more narrated by R.C. Bray! And, I look forward to reading more books in this series. Malcolm is a great character and I hope to see what Mr. Bruno has in store for him and the Children of Titan.
I was given the chance to listen to this book by the author/narrator/publisher and chose to review it.
Titanborn by Rhett C. Bruno and narrated by the wonderful R.C. Bray. This audible book has the best characters! I really became attached to a couple of them quite quickly. The plot is unpredictable and totally surprised me at the end . Lots of action, great world building, or universe building lol, and it made me feel like I was there.
The narration was terrific as expected by Me Bray! He always performs so wonderfully!
I received this book for free. I am voluntarily leaving this review and all opinions expressed herein are mine.
This is the first book in the series Children of Titan. It is a standalone – no cliffhanger ending.
Here, Malcolm is a collector [bounty hunter]. He has worked this job for close to 30 years and become immune to the violence he creates/stops with his job. He appears to have no empathy for others and does the job required for the money with unquestioning loyalty to his company. However, as the story progresses, Malcolm’s backstory is revealed including that he has a daughter who rejected his way of life. His last assignment did not go as well as expected so Malcolm is assigned a partner, who is unemotional, extremely capable, and keeps tabs on him. After a bombing, Malcolm and his partner are assigned to investigate.
The world building in this book is incredible but what really drew me in was the character of Malcolm. He is not a one-dimensional grumpy drinks too much guy – he is grizzled and scarred because of his past which continues to haunt him. He also has a sardonic sense of humor, which rubs off on his partner. His relationship with his partner is fun to watch as it evolves. The ending is somewhat heartbreaking but in conformity with the characters.
I listened to this book – the narrator has a smooth yet gritty voice which embodies the vision I had of Malcolm. He complimented the written word with his narration.
Excellent new technothriller series! This author is new to me, but after this book I’d be interested in checking out more of his work. I mainly picked this book for it’s narrator. R.C. Bray is one of the best narrators I’ve come across! This story takes place in the future after humanity is almost wiped out by a massive meteor. There are some survivors left on Earth, while other ventured out into our solar system. I am certainly looking forward you the rest of this series!
