From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Discovery of Witches—look for the hit TV series “A Discovery of Witches,” streaming on AMC Plus, Sundance Now and Shudder. Season 2 premieres January 9, 2021! What does it truly take to become a vampire? On the battlefields of the American Revolution, Matthew de Clermont meets Marcus MacNeil, a young surgeon from Massachusetts, during a moment … MacNeil, a young surgeon from Massachusetts, during a moment of political awakening when it seems that the world is on the brink of a brighter future. When Matthew offers him a chance at immortality and a new life free from the restraints of his puritanical upbringing, Marcus seizes the opportunity to become a vampire. But his transformation is not an easy one and the ancient traditions and responsibilities of the de Clermont family clash with Marcus’s deeply held beliefs in liberty, equality, and brotherhood.
Fast-forward to contemporary Paris, where Phoebe Taylor–the young employee at Sotheby’s whom Marcus has fallen for–is about to embark on her own journey to immortality. Though the modernized version of the process at first seems uncomplicated, the couple discovers that the challenges facing a human who wishes to be a vampire are no less formidable than they were in the eighteenth century. The shadows that Marcus believed he’d escaped centuries ago may return to haunt them both–forever.
A passionate love story and a fascinating exploration of the power of tradition and the possibilities not just for change but for revolution, Time’s Convert, the fourth books in the All Souls Series channels the supernatural world-building and slow-burning romance that made the previous books instant bestsellers to illuminate a new and vital moment in history, and a love affair that will bridge centuries.

I love everything by this author
I love this series, love all the characters.
The next step for Phoebe and Marcus plus his backstory. Marcus’s time in New Orleans, however, received virtually no attention – it was basically a summary close to, “and then all of Marcus’ children some did bad stuff – never mind what, it was just bad. And Marcus was pretty oblivious to what was going on and didn’t do anything about anything,so oh well. But take our word for it he felt really bad about it later. Then Matthew killed most of them”. Left me with no real reason for Matthew’s actions or what was so bad or why Marcus even felt bad about anything much later – after great and graphic detail of the rest of Marcus’ backstory, it was a real let down.
Phoebe’s story is so unimaginative and repetitive it’s boring.
Seems like Matthew has turned into a yuppie, whiney soccer dad rather than the badass vampire he used to be. And, our witch is doing magic mostly to entertain her twins and provide fireworks for parties …. really??? So disappointing. Guess the author ran out of good plot lines for the characters.
So: disappointing.
Of you like the author’s previous books, or history, then you will enjoy it. Lots of depth on family dynamics and drama. A bit too long on my opinion but I pushed through it. A good read but not awesome
I really like this series! The story is unique and captivating. The characters are easy to like and realistic. The writing is exquisite!
I don’t really like this series, but this one appealed to me enough to read it because I’m very familiar with some of the locations. Interested in the American Revolution, and learned some new details about smallpox and Washington’s risky policy of inoculating his entire army. Overall, predictable romance though.
I can’t over-state the pleasure I get from reading this series. I’m so glad that Harkness decided to continue beyond her original trilogy. I look forward to seeing where she takes us next
The All Souls Trilogy is a wonderfully original series by a very talented writer. Times Convert is story centered around one of the secondary characters in the trilogy. It was great to revisit these characters.
I found there was too much historical lectures and not enough plot.
Great book-very entertaining.
A good following/continuation of In Search of Witches. Interesting tidbits of history along with the story. Hope there are more to come with this “family”.
I liked the background on some of the characters from the other books. Different.
Not nearly as entertaining (nor interesting) as the first two books of the Discovery of Witches series, not even as entertaining as the third book in that series. Not the worst book I have ever read either. Merely disappointing for this author. It happens.
Absolutely one of my all time favorites! Love this series
I listened on CDs for the entire Discovery of Witches series and it was so wonderful. Great series and amazing amount of history and countries explored.
Time’s Convert by Deborah Harkness is the first book in her All Souls Universe series. This is a spin-off series to the much beloved All Souls Trilogy and focuses on Marcus and Phoebe whom we met in the All Souls Trilogy.
I have read mixed reviews to this series stating that the flow of the story was off, that there wasn’t enough drama, that it was more of a historical recounting than a story and to these I personally disagree. Marcus’s story is a gem of information and insight. We get to see Diana and Matthew and the rest of the family at Sept Tours and Les Revenants. We are there to witness Phoebe’s transition from human to vampire. We are also privy to Marcus’s past thanks to Diana’s passion for anything in history. The story ebbs and flows between these three places and times (Phoebe in Paris, everyone else at Sept Tours, and Marcus in the past from his time as a soldier in the revolutionary army through to his time in Louisiana).
Well-written and the perfect balm to my soul that is desperate for more from this world. Having devoured Matthew and Diana’s story and binge-watched (multiple times) the first season of the show on Sundance Channel, this was a great tide me over. Enjoy!
Absolutely a must read! And again.
Loved this. Like visiting old friends. If you enjoyed The All Souls Trilogy. Then this is a must read!
This is the follow up to the All Soul’s Trilogy. Harness is an amazingly good storyteller.
These Characters are now family. I’m so glad Deborah Harkness has continued to expound on this series and give us these secondary characters backstories. From the reading of Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, inoculations, the Revolutionaries on both sides of Atlantic this story is RICH in wonderful historical stories. The love stories that transcend them all are wonderfully written and completely endearing. I can’t wait to read every single adventure that Ms. Harkness deigns to share with us.
I have to say…..who thought the Discovery of Witches would have brought us all of this glorious world building? Truly Bewitching
The narrator brings every character to life with excellent nuances!
