Wow another great instalment to the time traveling taxman series , although I think it should be called the Nancy series because there is no way Alfred would still be alive or sane without her. This is book four and each book is so different from the last that you never know what to expect, the writer certainly hasn’t backed herself into a corner write about the same old thing., The only constant thing is its quirky, funny and enjoyable. Oh and the characters. This time the book sees a different twist on the Robin hood fable. Off to start the next book.
Nancy has managed to talk Alfred into camping and she has prepared for everything, being a Tec genius she has planned for everything. Even the fact that Alfred will forget something but the one thing she didn’t plan for is the one thing that will send there lives spinning out of control. Leaving the time traveling device in the tent when there is a storm in the area, a tent with a leak. Water damage and Alfred PRESSING the button soon has them slipping into different realities, some that they didn’t see coming . Before dumping them in Yngil-wode a world where out laws steal, refuse to pay taxes and live in woods. If living in woods wasn’t bad enough for Alfred he now has to share this reality with another Alfred (called Fredo) and Justin (an annoying office colleague at the tax office) that got dragged with them from another time before the machine broke for what seems like the final jump. Can Alfred and Nancy get back to there world and time line or are they stuck for good?
I have grown to really like this narrator and his interpretation of Alfred and his friends.
I was provided a review copy, the review is an honest review.
Time travel stories have always been my favorite, as far back as I was a child growing up in the 60s. So when I get a chance to read one I will always try to. I had not looked at the previous stories in this series so I did not know there was a history of the characters..
The story starts off fairly slow, on a camping trip of all things. The time travel device does not show up till a few chapters in, and that got me near the point of giving up on it. That and the narration. He stops at the end of every paragraph for almost 2 full seconds. If you have a chance, speed it up to about 1.4 speed, you will thank me. I did not do that thill about 1/2 way through. But the slow pace and slow reading was not a great thing.
It was interesting in a time travel story that it was more a philosophical discussion on things like soul mates, is taxing good or bad, addiction, and the multiverse. Yet, in this story they all seem to fit.
Overall, it is a good clean story, with an engaging story line. I would recommend it to all.
Time Slips & Tax Thieves (Time Travelling Taxman Book 4)), my fourth read from author Rachel Ford. This book is so well-written & enjoyable. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reading & reviewing it. John Carter Aimone’s talented narration adds greatly to the book’s enjoyment. I look forward to the next book in the series. “I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.” (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
**** SPOILER ALERT ****
Ford delivers an interesting and quirky retelling of the “Robin Hood” trope in “Time Slips & Tax Thieves”. The author continues their superb world building and character development in this book. I couldn’t put this entertaining book down until I’d finished it.
I strongly encourage you to get this book, or splash out and get the boxset that has volumes 1-6 of this lighthearted series.
In the interest of transparency: I was given a review copy of this book and I am voluntarily sharing this review.
It is my own honest opinion.
This was a wonderful story. I cannot wait to read more from this storyline. Rachel Ford really knows how to write a story that keeps your interest. I love the two main characters plus all the others. Keep writing Rachel Ford, I love it. I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Time Slips & Tax Thieves (Time Travelling Taxman, Book Four) by Rachel Ford and narrated by John Carter Aimone is another fun one with Alfred and Nancy (and everyone they drag into their time travel shenanigans)! Definitely recommend this one- the books get better as the series moves forward.
What’s it about? Alfred and Nancy go camping and while “roughing it”, their tent gets full of water, resulting in the time machine malfunctioning. They then glitch to multiple alternative realities before ending up in medieval times. From there, the good and not so good times roll. This is a book for those wanting a happy end.
The narrator, John Carter Aimone, was OK. I’ve made it clear in previous reviews the speed is a bit slow my taste. My solution to this is to speed up the narration a bit and that solved my issue with it (if you find this is the case, try this before quitting the book). John does voice Alfred well- I can’t imagine another voice for Alfred.
Parental guidance/trigger warnings: Overall the book is light. Alfred doesn’t believe in swearing and is a very by the book kind of guy. There is an addiction theme in this particular book.
*I was given a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you for allowing me to listen and review the book!
Another great story from Rachel! This story was really great, the characters make you feel like you are part of it all, rooting for the home team. I loved the world she wrote in this novel as much as the other worlds she takes you to.
Review of Time Slips & Tax Thieves by Rachel Ford
Moralistic adventure plays out in medieval England defending taxation and a generous ruler – 3.5 stars
Two people in the IRS get a time travelling machine manage to visit other domains, sometimes with co-workers including themselves from another time dimension. In book four of the Time Travelling Taxman series, we travel to medieval England.
Enjoyable if not a bit silly, Alfred the taxman is not the hero; his soul mate, Nance from information technology (IT) support is the brains of the operation.
Giving Nance the persona of the nerdy IT specialist and Alfred the guise of a straight laced, will-never-swear demeanor makes for early 20th century sensibilities with late 20th century technology.
Instead of science fiction, we see primitive living conditions which can be greatly improved by water power and sanitation upgrades.
The notion that taxes are good because they finance infrastructure improvements like roads and hospitals as long as the hereditary rules is benevolent.
In this idealistic story, everyone benefits and the ruler is enlightened. The simple story could be considered to be a corollary to Aesop’s Fables, the story of a few visitors who disappeared after a short visit. Not deep, just fun.
This book is part of a series, but it is the first book in the series that I have read. Each book stands on its own and you do not need to have read the other books for this to make sense. It also has a true “ending”; which is a always a good thing. Sometimes series books do not have an ending, which is always annoying.
Since I had not read other books in this series, I did not know what to expect. It starts like a normal rom-com and then all of a sudden, you get zapped off to another dimension. I actually could have done without the zapping part. But I guess it gives you an endless number of different settings. The story was okay, but not amazing.
The characters were decent and not annoying. They were generally likable, which is a bonus.
This was a pleasant diversion. It is not going to solve any world problems, and none of the technology makes any sense. But I would read another book in the series.
There were a couple of minor editing issues, and a couple of places where word choice was not correct. (The word chosen was exactly the opposite of what I think the writer was trying to say.) But this only caused me to think, “Huh?”; a couple times and did not majorly detract or distract from the book. The rest of the editing was not bad.

It helps that I have a retired tax agent friend who is surely related to Alfred, but this book made me laugh again and again. It was well written and witty, and I can’t wait to read more by Rachel Ford.

I like Rachel Ford’s ideas – this kind of time travelling mayhem can be hilarious. Her writing style is deceptively light and easy to read. I just have a real challenge relating to the characters. Alfred in particular is the person ends up accidentally travelling in time despite his preference for an orderly life and all forms properly completed and filed. My question is this – after 3 previous adventures, hasn’t Alfred developed some self-preservation skills that do not revolve around an ordered office?

Once Again Alfred and Nancy skip through time and dimensions, but this time things go horribly wrong! I really admire Nancy for her never ending cheerfulness and ability to get things done, but I do question her taste in boyfriends – Alfred would drive me batty! Readers of fun and quirky time travel romantic adventures would love this. I am looking forward to the next installment of the Time travelling Taxman.
