When advertising artist Si Morley is recruited to join a covert government operation … join a covert government operation exploring the possibility of time travel, he jumps at the chance to leave his twentieth-century existence and step into New York City in January 1882. Aside from his thirst for experience, he has good reason to return to the past–his friend Kate has a curious, half-burned letter dated from that year, and he wants to trace the mystery.

A good beach read should be completely immersive and fun. Time And Again is a fabulous time travel adventure, taking the reader back to New York City in 1882, when the raised arm of the Statue of Liberty stood in Madison Square, the Brooklyn Bridge was still under construction, and sleighs were a preferred mode of travel in the winter. Author Jack Finney used historical newspaper photographs to illustrate a page turning classic.
WOW. I can’t remember the last time I loved a book this much. I could not stop talking about it while I was reading it, I started reading it again as soon as I finished it, and I’m pretty sure I’m going to buy a copy for everyone on my Christmas list. It’s that kind of book. Of course, I’m a sucker for books about New York, and the idea of traveling back in time to satisfy one’s curiosity about an earlier, long-lost New York is pretty much catnip to me. The fact that Stephen King called it the best time-travel book ever written, and Audrey Niffenegger wrote the introduction to the new edition, certainly didn’t hurt.
One of the best Time Travel books I have ever read. This is a sequel to Time after Time! Read them both!
Time and Again is a classic time-travel novel. Finney is spell-binding as he moves his protagonist through time. I’ve read this several times. I’ve purchased it and given it away several times. I plan to do it again. And again. (His collection of short stories is a great read as well.)
I do not like time travel books, so when I had to read this book as a book club selection, I was skeptical. However, I was pleasantly surprised that this book kept my interest. Sit back and enjoy the trip to New York City in the 1880’s. The author includes some old photos in this well-written older book. A timeless classic!
Very good book…… The movie “SOMEWHERE IN TIME” with Christopher Reeves was taken from this book
Incredible book
New author for me and great read
I’m in the midst of rereading this classic time-travel novel from 1970. Even though I read it when it first came out, it has been so long now that I have forgotten a lot of the details and it’s almost like reading it again for the first time.
It takes place in New York City where I lived for 10 years while working as an actor, so I was very familiar with a lot of the locales.
Jack Finney is a gifted writer who paints a vivid picture of the city. If you haven’t read it, do yourself a favor.
One of the best time travel novels ever written, and a classic in the genre. I highly recommend it.
This is one of the greatest modern classic genre novels. Finney didn’t INVENT time travel books. I mean, Mark Twain wrote one! But ever since Finney wrote T&A, everyone else has been playing catch-up and color-by-number. The narrator’s tone is utterly unique, and places and people jump from the pages, gleaming in their familiarity. You can actually smell New York. Did I mention that it is SINFULLY entertaining? Not to be missed. You will never feel the same about 72nd Street and Central Park West again. 😉
A classic tale involving time travel. The first time I read this book, I was enchanted. It can be read over and over again without losing its charm.
Great read and good concept. I loved how the author evolved a theory into something as intriguing as time travel, which is always fun to explore.
Immersed in the 1970s as well as the 19th century, this time travel piece is unique in its depth. And the conclusion is gasp worthy.
It may be the strongest instinct of the human race, stronger even than sex or hunger, is (sic) curiosity: the absolute need to know. It can and often does, motivate a lifetime, it kills more than cats, and the prospect of satisfying it can be the most exciting of emotions.”
Simon (Si) Morley, a 20th century office grunt, gets conscripted into a fascinating project that sends him back to 1880s Manhattan. The late Jack Finney has written one of those fascinating “time travel” fantasies since Pete Hamil’s “Forever”, a book that sits on my personal “best books list”. I’m so overwhelmed by how much I loved this book I can hardly articulate how I feel. I can see how authors like Hamil and Audrey Niffenberger were influenced by it.
When I first read about it on Tor.com,I remember make note of it.Six months or so later, when it came into my library reserve queue I didn’t get very far before I had to return it, and decided then and there it was time to get a copy. Why hadn’t I ever heard of him before? His untimely death in 1977 leaves us with a limited shelf of his work. Imagine what he’d think of the 21st century! Highly Recommended 5/5
This book is so good I’ve read it three times. The history is amazing.I bought copies for my friends because every time I loaned it out I didn’t get it back. You have got to read this. I loved this book!
One of my favorite time travel books that I’ve return to read many times. A wonderful picture is painted of the late 19th century New York, romantic and brutal. The characters are wonderfully drawn and the plot is realistically developed. A true classic to be added to everyone’s reading list.
I love this book. I bought it when it first was published in 1970 and it is the one book on my shelf destined to never collect dust because I read so often. Aside from the time travel aspect, it’s just a fantastic adventure.
A Classic…. read it and you’ll see why. A believable time travel story that pulls you in ….
I discovered Jack Finney nearly 20-years ago and only wish he were alive to write more such innovative and fun books. Great fun.
