In a world violated by terror, the old lines have blurred. Meet the next generation of covert ops.
John Dempsey’s life—as an elite Tier One Navy SEAL named Jack Kemper—is over. A devastating terrorist action catapults him from a world of moral certainty and decisive orders into the shadowy realm of espionage, where ambiguity is the only rule. His new mission: hunt down those responsible for the … responsible for the greatest tragedy in the history of the US Special Ops and bring them to justice.
But how does a man torn between duty and revenge walk the line and preserve his soul?
As Dempsey struggles with the games of spies, the case propels him across the globe in a desperate effort to prevent a new, horrifying attack on American soil.
Once, John Dempsey followed orders blindly. Now he sees behind the curtain, and the security of the civilized world rests on one question: Can a Tier One Navy SEAL adapt and become the world’s most lethal spy?

Tier One is a book about an elite Navy SEAL joining the ranks of a shadowy government agency – a hybrid of intelligence and special warfare. The book was written by two former officers in the Navy. As a former naval officer myself, I was rooting for this book to be good. I wasn’t dissapointed.
The Tier One series is written by a former Navy submarine officer, and a former Navy doctor (who deployed and worked alongside SEAL teams).
Two things made this book great: One – the writers did great research. The sights, sounds, dialogue, and weapons nomenclature were spot on. And two – man, can they write. Tier One is a really good book. You care about the characters – their motivations are believable. The descriptions of military special warfare and signals intelligence seemed very realistic to me, having served from 2003-2013. The action and suspense scenes are very well done, and some of the unique ideas around the secretive special operations – intelligence unit were quite imaginative.
The basic premise is that there is an Iranian plot to severely damage US Special Forces, and once that is done, to do much more harm without the threat of an American response. The newly formed SpecOps unit – codename Ember – must solve the riddle and save the day. It’s a familiar theme, but there are some refreshing details that make this plot unique. I highly recommend it.
If you like Tom Clancy’s character John Clark, or the novel Rainbow Six, then the Tier One series is for you.
A Realistic military/espionage thriller, just what I like.
I’m a big fan of military/SpecOps books and this didn’t disappoint. I borrowed from Kindle Unlimited and listened to the book via its Audible companion. The narration was impeccable. Each character had a clearly defined “voice” and was expertly portrayed even with numerous accents, genders, & personalities. Reminiscent of the complexities in The Bourne Identity ~ the world-building was thorough without being tedious, the characters were relatable (even if hated), and the plot-twists create the perfect suspense while still believable. I will say that this novel doesn’t belabor long explanations (sometimes no definitions are provided) for military acronyms, ranks, spec-ops directives, etc. I’ve read a considerable amount of military books, both fiction & non, so this wasn’t an issue for me. I don’t think it would detract ~ but a newbie to this genre might be overwhelmed, or at least need Google nearby to help translate.
Definitely looking forward to the next installment.
Update: After listening to the Tier One Trilogy via KU ~ I enjoyed them so much that I purchased them via Audible. I’ve listened to them repeatedly and they continue to hold my attention.
The first book in the bestselling TIER ONE series. For authentic military action and adventure, this thriller takes you on a different, yet plausible thrill ride. Written by a team of two Navy veterans, TIER ONE is a book you’ll love.
Good book that kept me on edge. Not predictable at all. Ready for more
Seat pf your pants ride, great series.
A pretty good story but I didn’t like the swearing and sex.
A good start to an interesting series that now includes six novels.
