I’m different. There’s a darkness that stirs restless in my soul.It craves blood and violence then feeds off of my anger and despair.I can control it… most of the time.I can starve it, but I cannot starve myself.Because it’s not just the darkness that craves these things… I do, too.My mother grounded me and helped calm the storm, now she’s dead and everything changed. My life is now lived … everything changed.
My life is now lived through red hued glasses and anger simmers just under the surface.
Until him…
Now my dark soul craves his and I won’t let anything come between us,
even if I have to kill… with my bare hands.

I loved this story of Ember and Vin so much that now I am obsessed! I can’t wait for more books in the series!
I will read anything and everything C.A Rene writes. I absolutely love the way she creates a world and characters. With that being said I’m reading this series backwards. I first stumbled upon C.A. Rene when her Whitsborough Progenies series released and I quickly devoured those. Reading Through the Pain i get to actually read about how Ember, Travis, Carm, Vin and Ari met and what they have to go through. This story was everything I knew it would be and more. I love Ember. Her darkness and her light. And the men in this story Holy Heck! I want them all This is a fast paced read which included Suspense, mystery, a heck of alot of steam, badas* women and alpha men This book HAS IT ALL!
Holy crap, this series!!!!! I have no words! Go READ THIS ASAP!! Here are my thoughts from each book:
Book 1- dark, mysterious, plot twists, FMC is a badass? I am here for this!!!
Book 2- INTENSE!!!! Definitely darker than book 1 but I love it! There wasnt a dull moment at all in this book!!
Book 3- My favorite of the series so far! I have no words to describe my love of this book!!!
Book 4- Holy Sh!t, what an ending!!!! These characters, these stories, are all phenomenal and everyone needs to read them!!!
If you have taken anything from this review, it’s you should read this series and CA Rene is the Queen of Dark and Twisty Romance!!!
“Emberlise, baby look at me.” It’s my mother, she’s standing in front of me with a serene smile on her face. Her white-blonde hair blowing in the wind. “You’re going to be okay, baby.” “I’m so tired.” “Rest baby, I’ll be here.”
First time reader of Ms Rene and I want more, so much more and can’t wait to get lost amongst the pages of Into Darkness. I feel going into this book blind is beneficial so I’m not saying much. These characters are raw, with scars and not all is as it seems. This is a twisted plot with those who feel something is missing and their lives are tainted. Tough girl from the Bronx picks up and finds herself surrounded by luxury when her life is turned on its axis. A new school, bitchy girls and a green eyed boy shrouded in darkness. Ember is feisty, funny and knows how to survive.
Why did I wait so long to read this? I love CA Rene’s work – the Desecrated series ripped my heart out and had plot twists I definitely didn’t see coming. I had such high expectations for Through the Pain and this book definitely delivered.
Ember is a fierce FMC – she’s a fighter (literally and figuratively) and doesn’t take crap from anyone. She quickly finds allies and enemies in her new school, but it turns out that Whitsborough isn’t as idyllic as it seems. She’s pulled towards the notorious school playboy Vin. The chemistry between the two is off the charts.
Without giving away spoilers, this is an excellent dark romance, full of secrets, cage fights, gang warfare, and twists and turns. I’ve heard that this series gets darker as it progresses and I can’t wait!
I really enjoyed this one a lot despite the characters being of high school age this is actually a new adult romance.
Emberlise is sixteen years old and an MMA fighter she has participated in legal and illegal fights where she grew up in the Bronx so has loose ties to the local gangs there.
After a fire that kills her mother and lands her in the hospital, she finds herself moving to Canada with her mum’s sister and husband relatives she had no idea existed.
Starting the local school and her new family’s wealthy lifestyle is so very different to her previous upbringing in New York. Though got to say her aunt and uncle were fabulous, real sweethearts.
A new School also brings its own set of teenage angst which Ember is more than equipped to deal with.
I adored how strong and capable Ember was she didn’t take shit from anyone including her new obsession Vin who at first doesn’t know quite what to make of the new girl but he does know he definitely wants her for his own.
Initially, he’s a bit of an ass used to girls falling at his feet and with Ember he has to put in some actual work and she nobody’s plaything.
Add in the resident mean girl who I’m sure has a lot more up her sleeve for our girl especially considering her jealousy of Ember now claiming Vin for herself and this was just so good.
Embers put-downs and comebacks to Marlana’s venom were priceless and I was egging her on all the way, This girl has a core of steel.
This also had fabulous secondary characters and Ember and Vin had so much chemistry together.
Then we took that dark turn and I was on the edge of my seat on absolute tenterhooks throughout.
How Ember is going to come back from this trauma is anyone’s guess.
A fabulous start to this series and I’m excited to see where this goes next especially considering that intriguing epilogue.

Ember goes through so much, from the very beginning when she loses her mother all the way to the action packed ending. After her mother dies, she begins to find out so much more than she ever knew about her own past and her mother’s. When she finds out she has an aunt and uncle, she goes to live with them where old secrets are starting to be uncovered. We meet Vincent, Adrianna, and Travis when she moves to Whitsborough and starts to form new friendships. You definitely do not see what is coming when she decides to find out more about who her dad is…. I can’t wait to read book 2!
This is the first book by this author I have read and it did not disappoint! I was glued to my kindle and riding a roller coaster of different emotions throughout the whole book..
CA has a way with words to keep you intrigued and wanting more, and more she gave! This is a dark romance with lots of drama and twist and turns..
CA has written out her characters really well and I love Emberlise, she’s a kick arse take no bullshit FMC who’s has had a pretty shitty start to life!
Can’t wait to see where CA takes us next in the rest of this series!!
ARC REVIEW- Through The Pain by C.A. Rene
O.M.G….Through the Pain is dark, intense, and so very steamy . Through The Pain starts off its Ember losing someone and then goes on to show the life Ember has with her Aunt and Uncle who she quickly fall in love with. Then something happens and Ember goes through something traumatic and she returns to Whitsborough feeling numb and very much changed. She is trying to find her way when she is confronted with someone who was part of her previous experience. When she does she get the shock of her life. Through the Pain is so engrossing that you are hooked from beginning to the end. Of course, being part of a series it ends with a very shocking secret. C.A. Rene is now one of my top ten fave authors. I have only read this book and the Desecrated Duet and I have to say she writes books that are deep and has characters that you can definitely empathize with and touches your emotions in a big way. You (readers) will laugh, cry, get mad at the characters, get frustrated, get lost inside of, and will keep you wanting more. I can’t wait for Into Darkness, Book 2 of the Whitsborough Chronicles. I totally and and truly recommend Through the Pain and reading any of C.A. Rene’s books. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Amazing fast burn love story about family, friendship, & survival. Ember’s mom dies in a house fire & she has to move to a small town in Canada with family she never knew she had. Unfortunately, this small town has many hidden secrets that are hiding just under the surface. Ember has such a spitfire personality! She’s an underground MMA fighter and all around badass who has zero problem kicking ass to protect those she loves Such a great read, 10000% recommend.
I read this after reading the Desecrated Duet without realizing you COULD(don’t have to) read these first. It doesn’t mess either storyline up to read one series before the first, but there is a cross between them.
My intro to Wittsborough was not what I was expecting. After reading Desecrated I knew C.A. Rene leaned toward the “darker” side. I don’t mind it. I wasn’t expecting the intensity of the characters she gave us.
Ember & Vin together are an explosion of darkness and love. They balance each other perfectly in my opinion.
Ember has such strong loyalty to those she calls family. She will do absolutely anything to make sure they are safe and protected. It’s not just anyone that gets that loyalty from her.
I have no idea where to begin…this book was beyond amazing!! The plot, the characters, the cover, everything!! Was just breath taking and amazing! Ember…she is amazing! I loved her from the start! She a MMA fighter! For some reason I just loved how she was a fighter and able to defend herself if needed. Travis and Vin.. both apparently handsome and fuck boys but from the minute we met them and a little bit after.. I don’t know why but I just loved them. Adri she is a bad ass like Ember and I immediately liked her. I was wishing she and Ember would become best friends and I can’t lie that I’m glad they are friends. I truly never thought I would love any other darkish high school book better then other ones I love but I must say this is listed as possibly book 3 of top favorites for me. Definitely a book to reread and I plan to reread someday in the future. C.A. Rene did an amazing job!!! This is definitely a 5 star rate! I loved this book so much and all the best funniest moments I had to stop to breathe from laughing to much!! Also let’s not forget to about the cover design by Samantha La Mar @TalkNerdyPR, the cover is beyond amazing! I loved it! So gorgeous!
I’ve got this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book gets like 50 out of 10 stars!! It’s freaking amazing!!!
What the hell just happened? I have finished the book and the ending??? Like what the hell???
This is my very first book by the author and I can tell you she scored! This book is everything I need!
I loved the main character Ember. She’s strong, independent, resilient, loving, caring and an MMA fighter!!! Omg…I’m so in love!
I love how fast-paced, but also not exactly completely fast-paced this story is. At one point I thought that the storyline is going too quick, but then I thought that maybe I just read slow books. This was perfect! I got everything I wanted and even more!
Last book I loved this much was Pretty Little Savage: A Dark Enemies to Lovers College Romance (Sick Boys Book 1), because it has this darkness and heroine (the main girl) is a fighter and fights. These two books are really similar and just beyond perfect!
In this book the main girl (Ember) has been living without her father, never knowing who he was. Only her mother and she, until one day there’s a fire in their home and her mother dies, nearly taking Em along with her. Our girl is moved away and “starting” (very freely used word) new life and finding new friends.
MMA fights took at least away the tiny bit of darkness that her mom knew how to take. Now she needs to figure out another way to get rid of off it.
This story is so much more than just what I’m writing about! It’s dark, it’s steamy, it’s vengeful, it’s painful, it’s bloody, dangerous and I loved every little freaking second of it!
I loved how the relationship between the two main characters started and took off. It wasn’t rushed (even though it felt like it at some points), but the wait they fit and knew a lot about each others’s darkness and pain…I knew why they ended up together right there.
Honestly, I’m glad that our girl had someone by her side. I loved her best friend and the way they were calling each other? Hilarious!!! Haha (insert cry-laughing emoji).
There is so much to discuss, but just know you HAVE TO read this book!!!
I think this should be classified as more on the light side of dark. It did keep me entertained enough to want to continue reading. It did feel rushed though. With that being said as soon as you read it tragedy hits. However, I feel as though I didn’t get enough of the story to make a proper review. I will continue reading and see how it plays out.
This was different than what I expected the h suffers from the loss of her mother and has to find ways to cope. It took a while to become dark, but it was a great read.
‘Through The Pain’ is the first book of the whitsborough series by the author C.A. Rene . Told in dual perspectives , get ready to meet Ember and Vin!
Ember is officially my favourite heroine. The woman is a MMA fighter for crying out loud. The way she fights is an absolute wonder to watch and her attitude is everything! Despite being so alone and losing her mother, I loved the way she kept herself together, not giving shits about who tried to break her. And trust , a lot of them tried. When she moved to a new place , she finally met the man who would be able to control the darkness she has inside of her. He is her perfect match and there is no way she is letting him go now.
Vin is one of the most swoony heroes ever. That man was sin incarnated and I loved the way he handled Em. He knew she had a darkness inside and the way he calmed her down and sparked her too was amazing. They were a match made in hell and they were simply kick-ass together.
I loved the storyline of this book and just can’t wait for the next book now! This series is different than everything that I have ever read and I can’t even tell you people how addicted I am! The writing style was moderate and I won’t lie and say that it was ok all throughout. There were scenes where I got bored and had to push myself to keep reading but it was good on an overall basis.
The other characters definitely intrigued me and I would love to know Tristan’s Story!! If you are a fan of kick-ass Heroines and heroes who know how to tame them then definitely read this one!
While I was reading it, I wasn’t so sure about anything really. But then the plot twists came.
I. Did. Not. Expect. That.
Ember is a 16 y/o who had a horrible life, but then she finds home, family. Sadly, C.A. wasn’t ready to give her a break and now she has to be like this kind of shield for everything and everyone she loves.
This is a little review since I’m about to read book 2 so I think the most complete one is going to be the one about the fourth!!
Through The Pain by C.A. Rene is a dark revenge romance. This is the first book in the Whitsborough Chronicles series.
I absolutely love C.A. Rene’s books! She pulled me in from the first chapter and I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next. There are so many twists and turns that kept me captivated until the very end. I loved the friendship that is blooming between Travis, Adri, and Ember. The chemistry between Ember and Vincent is off the charts. I really liked that at the end of the book we got Vincent’s point of view as well.
The book does end on an amazing cliffhanger and I can’t wait to dive into the next book in the series Into Darkness so I can get more of Ember’s story.
I would highly recommend this book if you like dark romances, contemporary romances, or romantic suspense.
Holy shit his books was awesome. I literally Could Not put this book down . C.A. Rene you are coming to be one my favourite author. Holy shit the twist turn threw this books and ember I absolutely love her now I am off to the next book and trust you want to read this book
“I had great hope on this story but it wasn’t as I expected. It took me three times to finish the story. The first part of the story was frustrating and the second didn’t got better. I couldn’t stand Emma. She was annoying, frustrating and to me beyond childish.
Vin was a typical bad guy who’s broken and it’s hard to resist. He was the reason I decided to finish this story. Emma was more likable with him though not enough for me to like her.
I’ve come to term that ‘dark’ can have different meanings. It’s countless the number of books that I’ve read with seriously dark themes. The kind of situations that gives you goosebumps but with this one I couldn’t feel it. The darkness didn’t felt dark at all more like… hopeless?
It’s really hard to write thoughts about a story you didn’t like but I need to be honest. The characters and the plot itself lacked and didn’t trapped me.”
