Kit Jernigan is ta female officer in the K-9 unit. She’s having a hard time fitting in with her co-workers. They are close-knit and have a difficult time letting anyone new into the fold. When fires begin raging through Monroe, her co-workers are so rigid they don’t listen to Kit explain who the firebug is or how to stop her. Local fire spotter Wesley March knows Kit is correct and wants to help her prove it to her co-workers. As Wesley and Kit become closer, someone inside the K-9 unit wants revenge, regardless who gets burned.
Through the Fire is another anxiety-filled story in this series. I enjoyed the content, the pacing, characters, and the continued world building. There is wonderful character development. The dynamics between Kit and Wesley are wonderful. The world-building also allows for clear visualization of the story as I read along.
This novel in the Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit series nicely wraps up the storyline in Book 1, Run to Ground, concerning Jules and her sisters. We get to visit with the characters we’ve grown to love throughout the series and see additional character development. Kip’s training sessions with Sam and his dog are endearing.
I enjoyed this action and emotion-filled novel by Katie Ruggle.
Loved this book as well as the other books in the series! It was entertaining to see a female officer with her dog try to fit into a small town police force and try to navigate through all of the secrets held between all of the men and their ladies. It is very helpful to read this series in the order it was written! The bad guys just keep on coming! One of my very favorite series and I highly recommend every book in the series!
I absolutely loved this book. This is one crazy ride back through that great small town of Monroe Colorado, accompanied by all the favorite characters I’ve come to adore through this series. The book would stand alone, but seriously, read them all for the full appreciation. You will fall in love with the cops (Theo, Hugh, Otto, their dogs, and the women that have come to Monroe with hope for a new future.) This one is a bit different, yes a new woman shows up in town and moves in with Jules. But a new cop (Kit) arrives on the scene and tries to fit in with the police force that is recovering from some seriously trying events. I like Kit, but Wes stole my heart. While there is tons of action and suspense in here, the romance between Kit and Wes is absolutely adorable. Jules sibling Sam is another great character in this story, and 3 cheers for Murphy. Mr. Espina arrives on the scene, and Jules story finally reaches conclusion. I’m sad this series is over. Ms. Ruggle weaves together a series like no one else can! Start at the beginning, fall in love with Theo and Jules, then keep reading. You won’t be able to put these down until the gripping conclusion.
Through the Fire, the fourth and last book in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series. It picks up from the explosive ending in book three.
This installment differs from the previous books. In this story the heroine is not looking to hiding her identity. She is a police officer. The one thing she shares with the other heroines is that of running from her past. During her relocation to Monroe she meets an awkwardly social, Wesley Marshall.
Wes is a math/computer genius and local fire spotter. Hermit by choice be lives in the middle of now where. He has no friends and finds comfort in his gadgets. As a result, he has difficulty interacting on a social level.
Oh my, I loved their first encounter, which was awkward but sweet. It had me smiling from ear to ear.
Kit’s meeting with her coworkers did not go so well. They kept her at a distance and refused to listen when she disclosed her suspicions regarding their women’ newest roommate. I understood why they reacted the way they did, but Kit being the newcomer was clueless.
I enjoyed the romance. Wes is so adorable. His interaction with Kit was so full of sweetness and it made me smile throughout it all. I loved how Wes slowly came out of his shell. One highlight for me was when he called his sister to get romantic advise. Awww.
The villain had everyone fooled, well except for Kit and Sam. Kit knew she was up to no good if only she could convince the others. The twist at the end shocked me to the core. That turn of events never once entered my mind, but it fit the story. My heart went out to those who were affected by the event.
I enjoyed this installment; it was fun, sweet and suspenseful. The tying up of the story surrounding Jules was a long time coming, and I thought it was well done.
Conclusion/Recommendation
Another hit from Ruggle. Fans of romantic suspense would enjoy this series. I recommend that you read the previous books before venturing to this one.
I read the entire series of these books. I enjoyed them a lot. I would recommend this author.
Having loved the first book in this thrilling series, I came to expect something more with the following ones. And after finishing each one I’d think, this is my favorite. I did get more than I expected with each book and each one did become my favorite. Guess that means the author will surely have to wow me again with this fourth book. And I won’t keep you in suspense. She did.
Kit Jernigan and Wesley March are the star character’s this time around. Kit is the beta to Wesley’s alpha. She may seem like the alpha in the beginning, as Wesley is a bit of a loner and prefers his time alone. But when the danger comes calling in the guise of one of their own, Wesley sheds his loner persona and steps right into his alpha role, making them a formidable team.
I like how Katie changed things somewhat, giving a female K-9 officer a leading role. And where usually the previous character’s have a more supporting role, this time they all come out to shine together. This worked gloriously. There were so many funny, adorable scenes, my face hurt from grinning. And my jaw hurt from clenching my teeth at the scenes of extreme danger and betrayal. Every one of my feels came into play and I couldn’t have asked for more.
The author wraps up her series with an ending that set me back on my heels. Whoa. I sure want to tell you all about it, but……..
Genuine character’s with flaws and insecurities have continuously stepped up to the plate throughout this series. Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten their brave, true and most loyal four-legged partner’s and companions. Being a binge watcher, if this were ever made into a television series, I’d watch it over and over again.
Did I enjoy Through The Fire? Oh, yes. Every single bit of it. Would I recommend it? I gave it the highest rating allowed. That should answer the question!
4.5 stars
Katie Ruggle is a genius. Throughout this series, the reader has gotten to know the K9 officers of Monroe, Colorado, as well as their significant others. The author blew me away with the way she brought Kit into the mix and helped the reader to understand the feelings of being an outsider Kit would have in such an environment. Of course, we know why the guys and their gals would be so secretive. We understand why they would be protective of Elena. We get the fear of outsiders they whole gang naturally has at this point. To Kit, it feels as if she’s being shunned and her instincts are being dismissed.
The silver lining of her new job in Monroe for Kit is meeting the burly fire spotter, Wes. Oh, Wes. Beautiful, awkward, brilliant, geeky, lovable Wes. I don’t know that I’ve read another hero so endearing with his lack of social skills. Another thing that struck me about this story is the author didn’t define Wes. Which means I’m not going to define him. Just know he is gloriously different and very specific. His was of looking at the world brought a smile to my face over and over.
Not only did I love Kit’s instincts, I also loved her way with kids. Jules’ siblings took to her immediately and all of the dogs love her, how can you deny that’s a good person? On top of all of that, Kit and Wes have the sweetest chemistry. They’re both unsure of themselves win it comes to romantic relationships yet somehow help each other over any awkward bumps in the road that they hit along the way. Their relationship develops in the innocent way of a middle school couple with all of the maturity and life experience of being an adult thrown in. I thoroughly enjoyed watching them come together.
While I’m not sure if this is the last story of the series, I know I will be seeking out more books by this author. She always hooks me from the start and keeps me turning pages.

Katie’s stories are a slightly off-beat look at some of the lesser known branches of law enforcement/rescue work.
Kit Jernigan is the newest member of the K9 Unit having arrived in town after the unit’s police department was blown to bits by the previous novel’s bad guy. Needless to say, her male counterparts are a little gun shy to trust the new girl in town. The day she arrives she is called to the scene of a fire with her bloodhound Justice to track a potential killer. When that trail points to a seemingly innocent person, Kit is the only one to believe that her story may not be true. Until Wes comes along. Wes, the local fire-spotter who works for the National Park, did his job and spotted the fire. When Kit goes to interview him, their chemistry sizzles and as they get to know each other, Wes is on hand to help her investigate her suspect.
This is the final book in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series and it wraps up the series story arc very nicely. It was refreshing to have Kit’s perspective as the only female officer in town. Don’t let that book cover fool you, that should be Kit next to the dog not Wes, since she is the officer in the unit. (The guy on the cover is handsome, but Wes was described as a huge mountain man with a lot of hair and I’m not seeing it at all on that cover!) Kit was smart, and her inner dialog made me like her even more. I also liked how she was attracted to Wes’s personality. It is obvious that he is borderline autistic or at least severely uncomfortable with person to person contact of any sorts. Katie Ruggle wrote his character as if that was totally normal and didn’t explain his peculiarities at all, which was really refreshing in an age where “diverse” characters are celebrated. She didn’t draw attention to it, it was just who he was.
Wes was completely charming! He was a hot mountain man with a brain. He was also willing to face his fears of being around people socially to be a part of Kit’s life. That is romance! My only critique is that she wrote him a little too well? I liked his personality with Kit, but because of his awkwardness the reader may have had to work a little harder to connect with him.
If I had to classify this book’s genre, I would classify it as romantic suspense or an action novel. There was a lot going on and the mystery definitely took center stage. However, I really liked Kit and Wes and was happy with the romance sub plot. This series started off flat but slowly built up steam and I liked Through the Fire the best of the four novels. You definitely must read the other books before reading this one since there is an overlying plot that runs through all four novels, sorry! Reading a Katie Ruggle book isn’t a hardship so even with the slow start I’d recommend reading this series. I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley for my honest review and it was honest.
Kit is the new K9 officer in Monroe. She has a memorable meeting with the local fire service lookout Wes, when he has to help her park her trailer, using maths skills that left me dizzy!
Wes is not your average, cookie cutter hero. He is tall, muscly but reeks of nerdydom. He is a bit of a mad inventor and is waaaaaaay beyond scary smart. He is socially awkward and I loved the way he turned to his sister for help in deciphering what to do with his feelings for Kit!
Drawn together by their joint feelings of being outsides for whatever reasons, Kit and Wes are soon thrust into danger. Bad things seem to happen to those sent through Mr Espinas underground railroad and the newest, Elena, just seems to give off weird vibes that Kit can’t ignore.
There are great scenes with Jules and her brothers and sisters. Sam is just a wee hero and I love him to bits. I love learning the why’s to everything that has happened to the girls and why for such a small town Monroe has a homicide/accident rate to envy any major town!
An epilogue to wrap up the story lines of the other couples and that of Wes and Kit would have been nice as sometimes I felt they were sidelined as the other storylines were concluded.
I’ve had my ups and downs with this author’s different series, but on the whole it’s been a good experience overall. After the ending of the last book, I was hoping for a lot from this book and I wasn’t disappointed!
I wasn’t sure who could be left to pair off, so bringing in two new characters was a good move to me. I really liked Kit and Justice, but really wanted a lot more of their background than what I got. I also wanted more background on Wes, but I was able to easily connect with him and saw a lot of my son in him as well. He really made the book for me! I absolutely loved the fact that this book tied up several loose ends in the series! It provided that final bit of closure and really made the series shine overall for me. There were a couple of nagging questions at the end of everything, but on the whole I quite enjoyed it!
Love this author
Action packed book..from the beginning to the end.
Hot guys, dogs, action, loved it.
I LOVED this book. It kept me turning the pages all nite till I finished the book. The story had some good twists that kept me guessing. I’ve read all the books in this series, so it was really great to see how the characters in the previous books were faring. This book tied up the ending for some of the people in the other books. I truly wish Katie would keep this series going, it is way too good to end. The humor in the story had me laughing, it was great, even though there were some tense moments which kept you rooting for the good guys. Fantastic Reading!!!
This is Book 4 in the Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit series. It can be read as a stand-alone without any problems understanding what’s going on. I haven’t read the first 3 and really enjoyed this one. Kit has just started with a new K9 unit and she’s finding it hard to connect with them. There’s a killer around and she knows who it is but can’t convince anybody because she’s the newcomer from the city.
Then she gets involved with Wesley, who is a fire spotter for the town. This is a story that flows from the start and keeps you interested in trying to catch the killer before it’s too late. The ending is not what you would expect but I think that is what makes it so good. I can’t say enough about this book, but I know you will enjoy the suspense and the slow romance that’s in here. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book that I received from Netgalley.
I volunteered to read an advanced readers copy of Through The Fire by Katie Ruggle .
This is my honest review . This is the second story by Katie Ruggle I have ever read but it will definitely not be the last . I really found this story interesting .
Author really wrote an intense , pulse pounding story . I could not put this story down . This story has many interesting characters . They are unique and quirky , and some just quite strange.
The story line starts with officer Kit and her blood hound Justice moving to small town Monroe in Colorado to work in police station , where she meets the interesting people . Little does she know that soon action , suspense and intrigue and romance start . This story has a little of everything and a bit of humor . I highly recommend reading this story.
Monroe, CO, may seem like a sleepy mountain town when Kit takes a new job with the police department, but her first day on the job is a surprise for both Kit and her K9 partner, Justice. Not only are the police station and two other businesses nothing but burned out skeletal remnants but before she can check in with her boss, she and her new partners are dealing with arson and a possible homicide. And then things really get interesting.
The advance copy I read of this book started out a bit slowly for me, but when things took off, they really took off! And don’t let the cover fool you. This book is all about the heroine, Kit, while she settles in to her new job and tries to track down a murderer. Then there’s the growing attraction between her and Wes, the solitary, quiet smoke spotter for the forestry service. I absolutely adored Wes, with his brilliant brain, inner nerd and social awkwardness. His first meeting with Kit is as cute as it gets, with him using geometry to help her back a trailer into the driveway, and I fell a little in love with both Wes and Kit from that scene alone. With a wonderful cast of secondary characters, of both the human and canine variety, this was a delightful, intriguing, heartwarming read.
A great read about a new canine unit officer, Kit, who comes to a small town that’s been devastated just recently and the hits just keep coming to the small town making it hard for her new partner and fellow officers to trust her. Wes is a recluse who hides in his “tower” watching over the natural habitat around him, spotting fires and calling them in. He’s a genius and has many gadgets which catches the eye of Kit and has her mesmerized with him. Wes can’t believe his luck that the beautiful woman is interested an she goes out of his comfort zone to pursue her and Kit doesn’t mind at all. But with new murders taking place and her fellow officers not trusting her instincts, trying to fit in is harder than it should be and when her instincts prove to be right….will it be in time ?
A great read with some steam, suspense, murder, a recluse hot man and a quirky officer. I liked these two and how Kit took to Wes, not ignoring him and wanting to know who the man is. Wes was a bit awkward and remained somewhat of a mystery to me, I wanted to know more about him, his past, his past relationships, what drove him to be a recluse and stay away from society. Otherwise I enjoyed this read and found it very hard to put down.
*I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*
She knows who is responsible for the mysterious fires raging across Monroe, but Kit convince the locals to trust her. Wesley March is willing to help her prove she’s right.
Strong, convincing characters easily draw readers into this thrilling and explosive romantic suspense that keeps readers holding their breath in anticipation of what will happen next. The romance between Kit and Wesley is sweet and charming as both seem a bit hesitant in moving forward but the chemistry between sizzles with electrical intensity pulling them closer. Wesley is a bit of a nerd with some social issues that easily captivates readers while Kit is more outgoing and take charge which proves that opposites does attract sometimes and ensures that readers keep a smile on their face. There is quite a few emotional concerns that have to be overcome as well as all the danger surrounding them which makes this romance quite interesting.
The fast paced plot flows smoothly from beginning to end with lots of exciting danger, adrenaline pumping thrills and surprising twists that keeps readers guessing as well as ensuring that there is never a dull moment to be found. The well-developed story and characters is full of vivid details that make it easy for readers to connect and become caught up in each and every aspect as well guaranteeing that readers can picture each and every scene which in return means readers become unable to put the book down. I was certainly one that couldn’t put it down and I fell hard for Wes and his robot cat and I really like the explosive final battle with the bad guy as it had such realistic events taking place.
