After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.
Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a … by a member of the king’s council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.
Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her… but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.
Then one of the other contestants turns up dead… quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

I think this book is awsome it has great characters and has a lot of suspence.
Started VERY slow for me. Took me almost half the book to get into the story and characters, BUT once I did I could not put it down. Finished the last 250+ pages in a few hours!
So I am in two mind sets over this book. I have read other people’s reviews stating how they can’t stand Celaena and her holy than thou, I’m the best blah, blah, blah. But what you have to take into consideration is that she is an 18 year old girl that for her short life existence has had it rough. Her parents died from what we can glimpses of …
Fair warning ahead: I listened to the audio book, so I have no idea how to spell any of these names XD I’m gonna take spellings from other reviews and hope they got it right, because the only name I’m sure of is Dorian 😛
(I’ve just looked at the list of characters, and BLIMEY, would I ever have spelled Chaol wrong!)
Speaking of Chaol – this …

“You could rattle the stars,” she whispered. “You could do anything, if only you dared. And deep down, you know it, too. That’s what scares you most.”
“Libraries were full of ideas—perhaps the most dangerous and powerful of all weapons.”
“We all bear scars,… Mine just happen to be more visible than most.”

set in a medieval time period and it is filled with magic, tragedy, and romance. SO GOOD
I absolutely love this book and am working through the series slowly because I really don’t want it to end.
This series is epic! It will suck you in from the get go and there is no limit to the twists and turns. This is the first book in the series but there are some short stories that proceed it so make sure you get those first. It will make more sense the deeper in you get
GIVE ME ALL THESE BOOKS. If I had known when I first read this book how much of an impact this author/series/characters would have in my life I would’ve laughed. LIke wow, this book started an obsession I’m glad to have. I love this world so much and this is such a GREAT first book. It has so much foreshadowing in it and it sets the baseline for …
The series is very good as a whole. The first book is more young adult and kind of slow while building characters but it’s still pretty good and clean. The following books have better action but the addition of sex and a few curse words is annoying because they seem to be added in to attract more adult readers. Thankfully these scenes are minimal …
A true rollercoaster ride .This book is a page turner
A seriously good story, I was totally captivated from beginning to end.
I love books by Sarah j Maas her books are amazing and this series was amazing one of my new favorites!
Love this series!
I was looking for a new series to listen to on Audible and the cover art for this book caught my eye. I was used to listening to books with strong male lead characters and was ready to try something with a strong female lead. This book seemed to fit that mold so I dove in. I really enjoyed the experience and was impressed with the character …
Literally one of the best first books in a series I have ever read
Couldn’t read this book fast enough!! LOVE the series already, and can’t wait to gobble the rest up.
I think the story is interesting but I had it on audio and the narrator had a voice I think that was too young for the character so it felt like listening to a kid and may have ruined the story for me.
words can’t describe how much I love this whole series
I’m already on to book 2!
