The beloved New York Times bestsellers that inspired the popular BBC series—from a Yorkshire veterinarian and a “wise and wonderful writer” (The Boston Globe). Perhaps better than any other writer, James Herriot reveals the ties that bind us to the natural world. Collected here are three of his masterpieces—All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, and All Things Wise and … and Beautiful, and All Things Wise and Wonderful—which have been winning over animal lovers everywhere for almost fifty years. From his night visits to drafty barns during freezing northern England winters, to the beautiful vitality of rural life in the summertime, to the colorful menagerie of animals—and their owners—that pass through his office, Herriot vividly evokes the daily challenges and joys that come with being a veterinarian.
Witty and heartwarming, this collection of whimsical, dramatic, and touching anecdotes reveals the ties that bind us to the animals in our lives. This edition features a new introduction from the author’s son and bonus archival photos.

Wonderful, heart-warming stories
Very original and entertaining
These are classics. Every vet student should read these books.
Love these books. Heartwarming with being maudlin.
It reminds me of a bygone era when life was much simpler than today.
Incredible stories. Each chapter that represents another day or week or some other period in the vet’s life is a stand alone short story. An honorable man doing the best he can as a young veterinarian.
If you are an animal lover, this series is definitely worth the read. It’s a collection of stories of a Veterinarian and some of his animal patients over a period of years. Heartwarming!!
lovely to live in a quaint English village amongst wonderfully real characters and let the world fade into the background
Just a pleasure to read them again .
I enjoy James Herriot stories! A great antidote to the dark memoirs, twisted mysteries and dysfunctional characters that we encounter in so many modern writings!
I love the James Herriot stories, told with such feeling and sincerity. He writes so poignantly about life as a country veterinarian in the hillside of England. All his trials and tribulations, of the country folk and their animals both pet companions and farm animals as well. I read his stories out on my deck with flowers blooming and birds …
Just a fun book to read. One minute you are laughing and next tears are rolling down your face. You feel his devotion in helping the animals while keeping his cool getting advice from the owners.
A bit of a sentimental journey to the land of country veterinarians who made house calls … very likeable characters, both two- and four-legged. A pleasant, happy read, all in all. A rare “upper” in a time when violent and dystopic literature are ubiquitous. Suitable for all ages (I recommend Dr. Herriot for precocious, young readers!)
Ages ago I watched PBS versions of episodes from these books which did not disappoint or take away from my memory. Herriott writes perceptively of his transition from novice to seasoned vet. His observations of rural folk and life and how science and pharmacology changed them are neatly balanced with tales of how war and military service changed …
I read these as a kid and they helped me develope a love for reading.
Classics. Worth reading and revisiting.
I liked the all of the books. Growing up I watched the series on PBS.
Herriot tells a great story. He does not use foul language, gratuitous sex or any of the often used ploys, that so many authors seem to need or use to try to make their books sell better or seem more interesting. Just very good stories, well written, a great read.
About English vet James Herriot and a classic. Great for animal lovers.
You can’t go wrong with this collection. Wonderful books.
