The beloved New York Times bestsellers that inspired the popular BBC series—from a Yorkshire veterinarian and a “wise and wonderful writer” (The Boston Globe). Perhaps better than any other writer, James Herriot reveals the ties that bind us to the natural world. Collected here are three of his masterpieces—All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, and All Things Wise and … and Beautiful, and All Things Wise and Wonderful—which have been winning over animal lovers everywhere for almost fifty years. From his night visits to drafty barns during freezing northern England winters, to the beautiful vitality of rural life in the summertime, to the colorful menagerie of animals—and their owners—that pass through his office, Herriot vividly evokes the daily challenges and joys that come with being a veterinarian.
Witty and heartwarming, this collection of whimsical, dramatic, and touching anecdotes reveals the ties that bind us to the animals in our lives. This edition features a new introduction from the author’s son and bonus archival photos.

I first read Mr. Herriot in the ‘70’s when All Creatures Great and Small came out. After that, I waited impatiently for subsequent publications from this master storyteller. To have such talent AND to love one’s chosen profession constitute a double blessing. What a gift he gave us; I frequently reread every one of Mr. Herriot’s books in my …
I’ve read these books many times over the years. They’ve made me laugh and cry. They are true classics.
By now, a classic…Wonderful characterization!
Fascinating to follow the career of an early 20th century veterinarian and the relationships between him, his colleagues, his clients, and the myriad animals. It is at times graphic in its description of veterinary procedures of that era, but not to the point of being off-putting. It was often joyous and uplifting.
2nd reading, enjoyed every bit of it, once again.
All time favorite.
For many years, James Herriott served as a vet among the people of Yorkshire.. These stories follow his experiences treating all kinds of animals. Since most of his practice in those days dealt with farm animals, you get a real picture of life in the beautiful mountains and valleys of Yorkshire and the wonderful people (and animals) he …
I have read these books multiple times. They’re the kind you didn’t go back and read again and enjoy every single time if you love animals.
These books are true classics, an entertaining and insightful look into human nature through the eyes of an English country veterinarian during the nineteen thirties and forties. These books are a must-read.
Animal lovers unite! Details are a bit dated as stories are often over 50 years old but human- and animal- nature doesn’t change. Very amusing and information that is given as side notes/minor details is very helpful to current animal lovers and pet owners.
James Herriot writes well about the animals placed in his care as a practicing vet in England.
A real treat. Some of the best most heartwarming books I have ever read. Great reading for young people as well as adults. Down to earth good reading.
Very well written. You feel like you are right there living it.
The perfect books for animal lovers and English historical books.
Anyone who loves animals will love these books.
James Herriot’s books are some of my favorites. He brings to life the occupation of the rural vet and all the interesting people and animals he encounters. His writing always keeps the reader engaged and entertained.
This is the second time reading these books. Love them! Used to watch BBC series from books many years ago.
James Herriat’s stories of a veterinarian and his patient will touch the heart of any animal lover. He captures the personality’s of the pets and their owners. Each story draws parrelels between the animals Herriot portrays and pets in our own lives.
Wonderful book! I would recommend it!
For anyone who loves animals and doesn’t mind reading about some of the dicier parts of veterinary medicine, these are wonderful books. I worked with human healthcare and found the early days of veterinary medical care to be fascinating. In the early books there was no such thing as antibiotics, so they made due with some interesting stand in …
