A trio of powerful New York Times bestsellers—which all became the basis for acclaimed films—from the award-winning Southern novelist. The Great Santini: A son struggles to escape the domineering expectations of his volatile military father. “Robust and vivid . . . full of feeling” (Newsday). The Lords of Discipline: Will McLean begins his studies at the Carolina Military Institute during the … studies at the Carolina Military Institute during the Vietnam War era and must mentor the school’s first black student—while facing down the menace of a racist secret society. “A work of enormous power, passion, humor, and wisdom” (Jonathan Yardley, TheWashington Star).
The Prince of Tides: When Tom Wingo learns that his twin sister has attempted suicide—again—he leaves the Low Country to visit her in New York and confront the family secret that haunts them both. “Conroy has achieved a penetrating vision of the Southern psyche” (Publishers Weekly).
Deeply influenced by the author’s own experiences, with his Southern family and education at the Citadel in Charleston, these stunning novels represent the very best of Pat Conroy’s impressive literary career. The South Carolina–set sagas were made into blockbuster films—two of them earning multiple Academy Award nominations—and each is a rich, emotional journey into the inner lives of fascinating characters.

Beautifully written story showing multi-layered characters, alternatively sad, tragic, and sometimes surprisingly humorous. It was a view for me of a family unlike any I’ve known. It made me wonder if some people should not, perhaps, be parents. It also showed me that the children of such parents can be wiser and more perceptive than either parent, and can use their knowledge to rise above the consequences of the confusion of their upbringing. These wise children, even though scarred in some ways, can also learn to appreciate the positive aspects of their experience, Uplifting in that sense.
Pat Conroy is one of my favorite authors. His books are always a joy to read for the characters and the prose.
I read each of these books individually, not in this 3 novel combo, but I cannot recommend any author as much as I do Pat Conroy. He is an author who draws from a deep, deep well. His characters are all drawn from Conroy’s troubled childhood and early adult life. and we can see his tragic family members weaved throughout the lives of his multi-faceted cast of friends and enemies living in his beloved Carolina low country. Never pass an opportunity to read a Pat Conroy book.
Conroy’s books are truly epic Southern/Family stories. While fictional they resonate as true to life stories.
Pat Conroy is one of our best writers.
I have read these three books several times I always get something new from each reading.
They have been made into movies and I get more enjoyment from the movies also.
Loved all of Conway’s books.
All his books are exquisite in their detail of character and location. Characters become friends, and stories are riviting.
One of my favorite authors. So sad he is gone.
one of the worlds great writers. If you get a chance to read anything by Pat Conroy, take it.
Pat Conroy is a wonderful author
Wonderful autobiographical stories. I laughed and cried. So sorry there will be no more. RIP Pat Conroy. Well done.
Pat Conroy is one of my all time favorite authors. His writing embodies the time frame and setting of his stories extremely well. His characters are well-developed and live within your mind. He has a fairly lighthearted tone in his approach, but with quite serious subject matter which I feel deepens the impact of his wonderful stories. Reading Conroy’s work is a verisimilitudinous journey through other people’s life. He is a gifted Southern writer.
Characters were well drawn, but, wow, is the author “wordy”! I skipped many pages of description (ex: the circus in The Prince of Tides) and didn’t miss them a bit.
I enjoyed the Prince of Tides years ago and was looking forward to reading more of his works. The Great Santini was a depressing read, I dragged through to the end.
The descriptions of South Carolina made me want to visit. The details of the military life and the cruelty within made me cringe.
I think the author is just brilliant
I loved all of Pat Conroy’s books, they were based on real emotions and drew you into the story.
I have read all of these more than once in physical book form but still bought this set so I would have them on Kindle when the time comes that I want to read them again. Pat Conroy had a great talent for writing which he spent trying to analyze and understand his own troubled family and life.
I will sure miss Mr Conroy. Your books are immortal
