Book 1 in a feel good Regency Romance series, full of love, with just the right amount of steam.“Regency Romance with a modern sensibility Unique and totally relatable heroines, irresistible love interests, and a cast of family, friends and villains that thoroughly captivates.” – Ev Bishop, USA Today bestselling authorThe earl finally finds his mystery woman—will he lose her forever to his enemy, … woman—will he lose her forever to his enemy, his best friend, or his own dangerous mistake?
London-hating dreamer, Lydia Norwood, has failed spectacularly as a débutante. Now an encoretante whose family has lost a fortune, Lydia discovers that the beau monde is hard on a nouveau riche social climber, particularly one who is no longer riche and only wants to climb trees. Lydia must stave off the effrontery of rogue lords and conniving competitors long enough to make a good match, or else incur society’s scorn by being so scandalous as to earn her own money. Falling for the unattainable Lord Aldley is a distraction she cannot afford. But they share such an enchanted history, how can her heart resist?
The tragically virtuous Earl of Aldley is tired of ambitious families hurling débutantes at his head, but cannot hide in France forever. He returns to London to seek out the mysterious tree-climbing girl who once saved him from a scheming chit, and finds more than he bargained for. Abductions, seductions, trickery and injury all endanger Lydia, but Lord Aldley’s heart is imperiled beyond rescue. He has only just found her—will he lose her forever to his enemy, his best friend, or his own dangerous mistake?

This was lots of fun. Lydia bears a remarkable, though quiet, resemblance to Elizabeth Banning (of Karen Robards’ “Shameless”) and to Josie Essex (of Eloisa James’ “Pleasure for Pleasure”). It is a good thing that all three ladies find men who appreciate their unique free-spirited enjoyment of life. Definitely worth reading!
Tessa Candle’s romances are a serving of strawberry ice-cream on a hot summer’s day. Love her wit, world-building and marvellous attention to detail; even the smallest cameo receives so much attention.
An utterly charming read – highly recommended.
I really enjoyed this book …a bit longer than I’m used to reading but was quite enjoyable .
If you enjoy , witty independent women , thouroghly besotted men then you might enjoy this as much as I did . Oh, and the side kicks are rather enjoyable as well ( in this case Tilly and Rutherford, and look forward to their story as well)
Couldn’t wait to see how this turned out. Wonderful read.
Tessa Candle kept adding another twist to the plot. Never a dull moment.
Lydia is a lady trying to avoid marriage unless its a love match. The Earl of Adley is trying to avoid being trapped into marriage. Lydia is an unconventional lady for her time. While in a tree , she saves Earl Adley from being trapped into marriage; however, he does not know who she is. An intriguing story.
Enjoyed reading it. Plan on reading her other books.
I loved the characters and how they all interacted. The story flows evenly throughout. I could not get enough of these characters and eagerly sought more of them. I hope you continue to bring more of them in the future.
I did find this a good read, it had strong characters and I found it hard to not enjoy the quirky attitudes from the tree lover Lydia to the mischievous best friend. I really was excited for the book two….so that tells me you will totally get hooked in this series…easily!
My only downfall and reason for the four star is I was dissatisfied with the title….I thought it would stand out more in the story line. Even though it didnt seem to match the book really good it was still really good.
Cannot wait to read more!
A young lady resisting, an Earl persisting and another young lady who desperately wants to be the Earl’s wife. Include some interesting secondary characters and you won’t be bored. The tone and pace of the book is a little different, but I enjoyed it very much. I recommend reading this series in order because characters from this book continue to the next one.
Enjoyed the book. Lots of laughs and several twists and surprises.
I had relinquished for a while to read this book, its length is probably the cause.
I do prefer my read to be read in one day or no more than two days, so with the holidays and me working, I did know I will need more time for this one, so as my next awaited book was only due for the 26th, I though I would give it a try.
The beginning was full of promises, I was also a bit scared by the reviews which speak about too many twists and plots, I just do hope the book will follow the good vibes I felt during the first pages.
There are plenty of characters, and Tessa Candle shares the point of view of many.
I loved Lydia, she is very naive but also bold and rather restless, she internally knows from the beginning who she likes or not, which does not prevent her from some mistakes but later she doubts her feelings.
The only part I had problems with her was when she became a creature driven by lust, it did not fit well with her personality, even if she does not always follow the rules, she is never far from the road, so why going from a young woman suite prudish to one who only wants to bed her earl out of wedlock.
As I do loved Lydia and Tilly, so what of the Earl?
Rather shallow and not very present for a good first third of the book, while his friend Mr Rutherford appeared as much more interesting, courageous and ready to be a white knight, knowing what he wants and aiming to reach his goal.
Thomas Ardley, The Earl, is a very rigorous man, probably due to his upbringing with a mother who became bitter because of the circumstances of her marriage. He follows the path drawn for him, but he is full aware of the flaws of his society, why he is probably drown to Lydia, who is the opposite of all he had ever known.
He will need time to get interesting, his friend stole for a long time the spotlights, more alpha and more rakish.
So yes, he is handsome but too uptight, why I do preferred to him Mr Rutherford, much more chivalrous than his friend whom is supposed to be the hero.
I did hoped he will redeem himself and find the wit to finally act for the woman he cares instead of letting the others guide his own actions, it was only when he comprehended he might lose Lydia, he decided he will accept anything she may ask even if it hurts his sensibilities, so he will change for her.
Tilly, Lydia’s friend and in some way her accomplice and for most of the story a point guard, helping Lydia to work out the ramifications of this entangled web she has found herself in. Tilly is such a mischievous funny character, able to play the perfect young Miss and also ready to any scheming if necessary to gain what she needs but also loyal to her friends. She is a character so out of the usual way of life for young missed.
I just didn’t understood why she decided to help the scheming ugly Miss Delacroix to get out from an uncomfortable situation and much more link her brother to her.
So yes, it was a long read but with all the events and plots and characters, it never felt too long.
There are misunderstandings but few angsty moments plus the characters were able to sort out the right from the wrong when they took the time to discus. The two main characters will evolve during this journey, always with the good for those they care in sight for their transformation.
An unusual historical read with witty banters and good humour.
A 4,5 stars rate
I just finished this story and all I can say is WOW! It’s mainly about Lydia and Thomas (the Earl), with great supporting characters. It was VERY enjoyable. It’s the best and most entertaining Historical Novel I’ve read so far. I recommend it 100%. I would rate it ten stars if I could. It has everything you would want; romance, comedy, some mystery, some sex (of course) and some devilishness and conspiracy. It covers everything. I can’t say enough. You just have to read it. I also got to read a preview of the next story involving some of these same characters. “Mistress of Two Fortunes And A Duke”. It’s also on my list to get. Tessa Candle is a great writer. Thanks so much Tessa!
Really enjoyed this book.
Haven’t finished it, but so fsrn very entertaining. Love the characters and the leads no nonsense approach to life.
Great characters, story, and writing. Just downloaded more Tessa Dare books!
Realistic in that it took time to develop, there were screw ups and ups/downs. Hilarious cuz who’s a thunk it.
Quirky, funny characters. Little different from typical romances. Not a heavy read
The book was a good read. Good storyline. Characters were well developed.
It’s not often that you find a historical romance with a strong female lead, and a the male lead that isn’t a swashbuckler or a dandy. The plot twists will keep you reading, the characters will have you rooting for them, and the villains get what they deserve with a twist. Really enjoyed this one
