Dee Henderson Pens Another Compelling Cold Case Mystery Evie Blackwell’s reputation as a top investigator for the Illinois State Police has landed her an appointment to the governor’s new Missing Persons Task Force. This elite investigative team is launched with plenty of public fanfare. The governor has made this initiative a high priority, so they will have to produce results–and quickly. … results–and quickly.
Evie and her new partner, David Marshal, are assigned to a pair of unrelated cases in suburban Chicago, and while both involve persons now missing for several years, the cases couldn’t be more different. While Evie opens old wounds in a close-knit neighborhood to find a missing college student, David searches for a private investigator working for a high-powered client.
With a deep conviction that “justice for all” truly matters, Evie and David are unrelenting in their search for the truth. But Evie must also find answers to the questions that lie just beneath the surface in her personal life.

Dee Henderson is still my all time favorite author…this one is no exception.
So first of all there had better be another book in this series, because otherwise it was NOT a good ending. All of the cases were resolved nicely, but I want to find out more about the characters’ relationships. I enjoyed this story. I don’t feel like it connected super well to the first one though. The storyline matched really well. But the focus of the story was so different and the style of writing was different too. Dee Henderson’s writing is super, and she has the amazing ability to have me basically believing these are real people I know.
In that direction of thought, I really missed Gabriel Thane. This series focuses on Evie, but the first book doesn’t focus on her half as much as this one. The first was about a third Evie, a third Gabriel, and a third other characters perspectives. This one was about an eighth other people’s perspectives and seven eighths Evie. I found that I actually missed the other perspectives, I think mainly because I missed the Thane family especially Gabriel. He is in the very beginning and mentioned until the middle-ish of the book, and then you don’t hear about him again. This book almost had a novella vibe vs a full length novel with the dramatic shift in style of the book(not length) I still really like Evie. But I don’t totally get her and her relationship stuff.
I really liked David. He was a great new character. Maggie was super cool as well. I really don’t like Rob. I don’t even think he’s bad, but the first book sets it up to not like him I feel like, and he just bugs me. I also realized with this book that there are other books Dee Henderson has written that would connect but come before this series.
So besides me being caught up on the characters, this book was great. The mysteries and how they were unraveled were perfect. How David and Evie worked together was fun. It was interesting and intriguing. Like I said I really really hope another book is coming in this series to wrap up some questions.
This book was so interesting to read, a real page turner.
Started off a bit slow when introducing us to the Characters. After a bit you start rooting for the characters to solve their mystery and their personal situations. Couldn’t wait to see how it ended. Cannot wait to read the next book in the series for their personal lives alone.
You can never get tired of a Dee Henderson book…they’re always great!
Enjoyable. Full of action, yet a fine pace
As always Ms. Henderson does an amazing job.
A very different format….a lot of detail….and not a lot of action but I couldn’t stop reading it. It took a bit to get used to the different style, but it kept pulling me in. I love the characters, especially Evie. I have always enjoyed Dee Henderson, and this one did not disappoint. I very much recommend this book!
I love Dee Henderson and this was a great book.
As always a great book by Dee Henderson. You will find detectives, policemen, and FBI and how they find the scoundrels as they live their own lives. But you have to read it to see what I mean. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series!
This us a very detailed descriptive story about how cold cases are solved. Great character development. I learned a lot about investigative and police procedures. I felt the story was unfinished at the end, however.
Dee Henderson’s writing style really resonates with me. I can follow the logic as the detectives work to solve the cold cases. I like that the characters are likeable and realistic.
I loved this book
always enjoy Dee Henderson
Dee Henderson is one of my favourite authors. I loved this book about cold cases. It gave insight into how one goes about finding out what happened to people who just disappeared. It was intriguing and most enjoyable.
After reading this book, I have learned that the life of a murder investigator is really quite boring… lots and lots of details that don’t fit together — some will later in the book, but some never will, they are just out there.
I really enjoy Dee Henderson’s books, but this one gets bogged down in details at times.
She is one of my favorite authors. Her books contain such down to earth characters that live in my mind like beloved relatives. There is always a God inspired relationship that I can relate to so easily. Good reads are all of her books.
Good book. Keeps you guessing.
Difficult to put down!!!!
Dee Henderson is a great author. She knows how to express a characters emotions so that it touches the reader. Her characters have realistic lives. I couldn’t put this book down.
