Unique is Good
In this well-Illustrated, colorful picture book, the author addresses childhood teasing/heckling, feeling different, and peer ostracism. Mel the watermelon is square, not round, so Mel is teased by the round watermelons. They imagine Mel won’t taste good, believe that Mel is not a proper watermelon because of his shape, and think the farmer will just toss Mel away. Mel feels pretty bad about this until a little bird discusses that all watermelons are unique in some way, but all provide happiness on a hot summer day. When Mel gets taken to the Farmers’ Market, everyone exclaims over the square-shaped watermelon, and in fact, the farmer wins a prize. The book has 2 two-page spreads after the main story, one that actually tells you about the origin of square watermelons (who knew?) and another for the child to express himself or herself if they’ve been teased along with some affirmations. If your child is being teased or heckled because of some way that they’re different, this could be a great way to open discussion about the topic. It could also start a discussion about prejudice as well.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
This is a good book about diversity and the illustrations are adorable. I read this book with my son and he loved it. It also featured one of his favorite fruit. The story is easy to follow and if your child is an independent reader, it’s an easy read.

This was a good book dealing with bullying. I really liked the way the author wrote this story and the questions and the affirmation section afterwards. Very good.

This is a beautifully written story of Mel and his journey of being different is good and something to be proud of! Mel is made fun of by the other round watermelons but through guidance of his bird friend it is pointed out that what he is like on the inside is more important on the outside. I loved the message that he is unique even though he looks different. The illustrations are beautiful, rich in colour, and will capture children’s attention and imagination. The author has also included fact sheet about square watermelons and how they are grown; and I especially loved the page of what to think when someone is making a child feel sad (about what others are saying about them) this really reinforces the message in the book. I loved it! Recommended!!!
Mel is a watermelon who is square and not round. The other watermelons do not accept him, which makes him sad. He learns a lesson in what is most important. I enjoyed the message and felt the illustrations clearly portrayed the emotions behind the characters in the story.
