A Christian Historical Romance novel.Widowed and with child, Emma Malcom is fleeing from the reward offered for her arrest. She’s innocent of the dirty dealings her deceased husband orchestrated, but the angry townspeople didn’t stop to listen to her defense before she narrowly escaped with her life. Now, she and her twin brother, Joseph, must battle the mountain wilderness of the Rockies to … the Rockies to reach Canada and the clean start she craves. But when a fall from the rocky cliff leaves Joseph wounded and weak, could the strange mountain man they encounter be God’s gift to see them to safety?
Simeon Grant makes bad choices. His deceased wife and twin babies are lost to him now because of his reckless decisions, and the penance he pays by living alone in this mountain wilderness is only a small piece of what he thinks he deserves. When a city woman, heavy with child, appears on his doorstep with her injured brother, her presence resurrects the memories he’s worked so hard to forget. And when she asks for his help to travel deeper into the mountain country, he can’t help wonder why God would force him to relive the same mistakes he’s already suffered through. Or maybe taking these two to safety could be the way to redeem himself.
But when their travels prove more treacherous than he imagined, Simeon finds himself pressing the limits of his ability to keep Emma and her brother safe. Can he overcome the past that haunts him to be the man she needs? Will Emma break through the walls around Simeon’s heart before it’s too late, or will the dangers of these mountains be the end of them all?

This is my first series by author Misty M Beller. I enjoy historical romance genre. Misty adds another dimension when she shares her faith through the cast of characters in this series. The setting is in the 1800s, in the Western territories. The reader becomes so invested in the families, by the end they feel like relations!
I enjoyed the journey, the scenery, the trials and triumphs. Highly recommend the Heart of the Mountains series!
This Treacherous Journey is a Christian historical romance novel set in the west in the 1800s.
Widowed and pregnant, Emma travels north through the Rockies with her twin brother, hoping to find refuge from false accusations in Canada. But an accident lands them stranded in the wilderness with only an antisocial woodsman, Simeon, to help.
This book was a little different than many of the western romances I’ve read in that the characters are traveling on horseback for much of the story, and that pregnancy is a large part of the story. Both combined definitely made the story interesting.
Another theme was forgiveness of self and healing. Simeon dealt with a lot of guilt and was forced to deal with his issues when Emma came into his life. It was good to see him transform throughout the story.
The romance was cute, and the historical details about the trip, interspersed into the plot, were engaging. I enjoyed this sweet, clean Christian romance and would recommend it to women who enjoy western romances.
I received a complementary copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own, and I wasn’t compensated for writing the review.
She’s the last thing he ever wanted on his doorstep…
While not a deep historical novel I still found This Treacherous Journey to be entertaining to listen to. It kept my mind busy while my hands were busy doing all that good stuff you gotta do around the house every day. Misty M. Beller’s story has a little bit of everything. Trauma and drama, storms and wild animals, sacrifice and miracles, romance and danger, faith and redemption. One of the things I really liked about this book was the small cast of characters. I’ve read hundreds of historical novels over the years, many with an overabundance of characters. So, it’s nice now and then to find one that’s easy to keep track of who’s who and what’s what.
As I mentioned before, I listened to the audiobook version of This Treacherous Journey. I found the narrator’s voice to pleasant to listen to, not everyone has a voice cut out for reading aloud but the lady chosen definitely does. And I felt that she did justice to Misty M. Beller’s story. I have the next book in the Heart Of The Mountains series, which, I’ll probably be listening to soon.
(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
God redeems both of the main characters in a beautiful way that brings them together! This tale is full of love, adventure, pain, and fear, but God uses it all for His glory!
The narration was perfect and I never had to guess who was speaking!
When I first started reading I got into it. I would recommend this book to anyone. I could not put it down and I read it in 2 days. This book was well written.
Treacherous is the perfect word to describe the journey taken in this book – not just physically (through rugged terrain in winter) but also emotionally. Emily has an accusation hanging over her head while Simeon has a tragic past. It was both compelling and thought-provoking to follow these two and see how they worked through their many challenges. A clean, sweet romance set realistically in the “pioneer” days.
The Treacherous Journey is Misty Beller’s tale of a brother’s and sister’s Winter journey through the American Rockies during her pregnancy, on their way to a new life in Canada. I don’t want to give away any spoilers about why they must take this trip, nor whether they ultimately safely arrive, and make a new home in Canada! But I will share that they meet up with a mountain man who seems a bit gruff and standoffish. Will he become their friend – or more? Or will they have to rough it alone on the trails?
I appreciate the faith blended into this story. I also appreciate that Beller does not portray Indians monolithically. She shows that, like ALL races, there are good people and bad people. My only issue was a minor one – modern language such as using the word “concerning” for something troubling. I admit to being a word nerd / grammar nut!
I loved this book, and I look forward to reading other books by Misty Beller!!
Very good story. Action packed, and lots of info about Rocky Mountain life in the 1800s. Keeps you on your toes wondering what will happen next.
This is one of the best books I have read this year. What a great series! Looking forward to enjoying the rest of these books. They are faith building; inspirational, encouraging, and caused me to reflect on my own life. It gave me a renewed thankfulness for the brave men and women who pioneered this great continent.
This was the first book written by Misty Beller that I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Loved the characters and how the main character is able to be restored from the pain and loss he suffered in his past. Treacherous is an apt title as endure much suffering during their journey but … they have grown from these opportunities to trust in the faithfulness of God.
This book is filled with adventure, intrigue and trauma. The dangerous journey was from the Montana Territory near the Rocky Mountains in 1856, to Canada. The travel was over several months in the dead of winter. To make the trip even more worrisome was the fact Emma was many months pregnant and was insistent that she and her brother, Joseph, reach family. Throughout this book there were mishaps as Simeon Grant led the small party north. Not only the weather was difficult, but there were all sorts of disasters with animals, Indians and freezing snow, along with the fact that each day of travel moved Emma closer to delivery of her baby. I did smile about three-fourths through the journey as I wanted to ask, “are we there yet,” as I kept on reading. I previously read Book 6 which I loved so much that I thought to start with this Book 1 and reach each of them. It’s a great series.
Emma Malcom and her twin brother, Joseph, flee from the law. In doing so, they must battle the mountain wilderness of the Rockies to reach Canada before being caught. On their journey Emma meets Simeon Grant.
I loved this story. It felt like being in the old west. The hardships they endured were treacherous. It brought out the characteristics of each character.
Scenes were tense and the pace was just right. I was glued to each page and didn’t put it down until the end. And, what an ending. I’m ready for the next book in this series. Misty is going on my “favorite author” list.
This Treacherous Journey is aptly named as it follows the physical and emotional journey of Emma Cason and Simeon Grant as the two travel through the wild and primitive interior of the Rocky Mountains with Emma’s brother Joseph. Anything that can beset them does, as author Misty Beller ratchets up the danger and suspense as to whether the trio will arrive at their destination. The descriptions are vivid enough for me to see, smell and hear what happens. I’m not usually a fan of prologues but this one set the story and helped me understand Simeon at a deeper level early in the book. I was hooked from the beginning, and the pace moved quickly. Simeon, Emma and Joseph are complex characters who I enjoyed getting to know. I was sad to see the book end. There are isolated incidents of violence, and some descriptions are graphic but neither are gratuitous.
I received this book for free from CelebrateLit Publicity, and a favorable review was not required. All opinions expressed are my own.
I love the mountains and all the beauty it brings. The story is beautifully written with such charm and realism. Emma is one tough woman. She loses her husband and then is accused of a crime. Doesn’t sound like she is having a good day to new. She takes off with her brother to Canada before she is arrested. Oh did I mention that she is quite pregnant, has no idea how to get to Canada and still takes off anyway. Emma just what were you thinking?
Joseph is a great brother and watches out for his sister. At some point they decide they need someone to help them get to Canada. The terrain is not for the faint of heart. They hitch up with Simeon who agrees to be their guide. Simeon is tough, rugged and carrying a barrel full of hurt. I can say this will be one trip they will never forget. Just as a side note, I love mountains but hate traveling on them. You look down and all you see is , well a big drop to the bottom. No I think I will stick to reading stories about people who travel on mountains.
I loved the danger they faced and how vivid the author represents the frigid weather and lack of shelter at times. I worried for Emma and her baby . It couldn’t be good to be jostled around while pregnant. She was such a trooper and hardly ever complained. She was so ready to get to her family in Canada that at times she didn’t want to rest. The author surprised me with a scene that made me scream “Look out”but Emma didn’t hear me. Simeon promised he would keep her safe, but in a blink of an eye she is gone. The story really takes on an adventure with Simeon and Joseph to the rescue. Can they find Emma in time before harm comes to her? Who would want to kidnap her? The ending is very well written and the author had me on my feet screaming at those men to hurry before it was to late. You must read this book to find out what happens to Emma. I read the book in just a few hours because I couldn’t put it down. It is so good and realistic, I had to see what was going to happen to our main characters. This is one book you must not miss. I loved the faith Emma shared with Simeon and together maybe they can find happiness and peace.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
This new book by Misty M. Beller was so exciting to read! There is literally not one boring page. You won’t be finding yourself skimming through this book, you will not want to miss any of it! So good.
This historical fiction is really heartwarming and shows the pioneering spirit of the people in this time period. Also you will see the need for self-sufficiency as they face their many trials, as well as needing the help of others, as well. This was truly a treacherous journey. You won’t want to miss this one!
I received an ebook copy of this book from the author. All thoughts are my own.
THIS TREACHEROUS JOURNEY by Misty Beller
Without going into details from the book, I just want to say that the book is very well written, well narrated, and the characters were wonderful. I totally enjoyed listening to the audiobook of this wonderful book.
I have read the previous books in the series and they were all wonderful. Don’t miss out on her books!
This was a sweet romance with a very strong faith thread, which I loved! You can’t help love Emma and Simeon Grant and root for them to get together. Simeon is a tortured soul with a good heart that you just can’t help but empathize with.
But I thought the twin brother and the other supporting cast were one-dimensional, and I thought several of the treacherous circumstances they found themselves in were a little far-fetched. In fact, the Indian drama made the birth anti-climatic, even though it technically should have been the climax of the main story. Maybe it was because the story of Simeon’s first marriage was relegated to a prologue (btw, I’ve never seen a prologue part 2 like that before!). But to me, that was part of the main plot. I personally think that the first prologue should have been chapter 1.
All in all, however, I can definitely recommend this book.
(I received this book for free. The decision to write a review, as well as the opinions expressed in it, are all my own. I was not compensated for this review.)
This was a beautiful story of faith, love, forgiveness, healing and new discoveries. While faith was most prevalent, the power of love to strengthen, heal, instill bravery and courage won over all.
The story was riveting, beautifully written, the characters fully developed, majestic scenery and skillfully narrated. I loved everything about this audible book (and Kindle edition too) and would not hesitate to share it with anyone.
Misty Beller is a gifted author. I read everything she writes.
We forget how our ancestors had to live without electricity or roads or GPS. How did these three manage to travel without our technology?
