He is showing signs of dementia and is scared, in case he forgets his wife or his granddaughter leaves him in his old age..
He is a veteran- from Army Air Corps in WW II & hasalways hidden his tender heart underneath his gruffness.
Her grandpa has always been her rock & she didn’t expect to lose him to anything besides death when his time comes..but..
In all this turmoil, there’s her love story that’s blooming but with uncertainties from hurts & fears from the past.
Will she end up with the love of her life
Will grandpa Walter be able to reach his Wife Irene, if she’s alive
What about his dementiaWill he forget Ginger & Irene
There are many twists and turns in the story to keep one alive with speculation as to what will happen next!
To add up, there a wonderful support dog named Rabbit to comfort grandpa!

This Side of Yesterday by Angela D. Meyer is an entertaining, faith-filled novel with realistic and relatable characters, relevant themes, and several sub-plots that add complexity – including one that goes back to World War II days. Dementia and foster parenting are key elements.
Ginger is loving, caring, hard-working, and self-sacrificing; but with all that’s going on in her life, I can’t help but picture the illustration of a juggler trying to keep several plates spinning on sticks. Success might be possible for a while, but not for long. Ginger is taking care of her 98-year-old grandfather in the early stages of dementia, managing the struggling family diner, keep from losing employees lured by the town’s big new store, and help a family committed to fostering children. There’s also her relationship with Mike, a single minister, who seems to want more than friendship.
The dementia theme is handled in a very tender way. Anyone who has lived with or given care to an aging adult can identify with Ginger’s emotions that are all over the place – love for her grandfather, impatience and irritation at Walter’s short temper and mood swings, guilt for having those feelings.
Another emphasis that I loved is the value and importance of community … coming together to help the fostering family, Mike meeting Walter at the café for games of chess, and who could have ever predicted the outcome of the unlikely friendship between a troubled teen and a grandfather with dementia and his buddies?
This Side of Yesterday is a heartwarming story of hope and grace, where we see the application of faith in daily life. The ending is very satisfying and simply beautiful.
Recommended.
I received a copy of this book through JustRead Tours. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
I have been on a major World War II kick this year for some reason, so it’s no surprise that I ended up reading This Side of Yesterday. There are several storylines going on in this book, and one of the main ones has to do with Grandpa Walter, a 98-year-old man who went overseas to serve in World War II, leaving behind his wife and child, and comes home to his child with his parents, and his wife and her family gone. He gave up searching years ago, but never truly let go, and knows his time is running out to find his one true love. That is where his granddaughter Ginger comes in.
The banter between Walter and Ginger is incredibly authentic and reminds me so much of the conversations I had with my late grandfather, and for 98 the man is a spitfire! Ginger has her plate full what with running the family diner practically alone, so when she adds finding her grandmother Irene to the list it is almost too much to take, but with faith and friends she is able to hold onto her sanity, and even help others in the process. The support system in this sweet little town is just amazing.
Faith is delicately woven in this book, which is beautiful, but I have to admit that there were parts that really dragged for me, though I can’t quite put my finger on why, but the ending redeemed itself in the most incredibly moving moment that literally brought tears to my eyes. So perfect written with such love!!
I fell in love with all of the characters, and the hunt to find Irene. It also made me think about one aspect of World War II that isn’t talked about too much: the treatment of Japanese American’s and internment camps during that time. Another heartbreaking aspect of such a horrible war.
This is a great, laid-back, yet touching and inspirational novel that tugs on the heartstrings and shows the importance of faith, friends, and family.
*I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author and/or publisher through JustRead Tours. All views and opinions are completely honest, and my own.
I loved this book. Ginger is overwhelmed trying to manage her diner, keep employees, take care of her grandfather, her responsibilities at church and even more. I loved this book. I laughed and she’d a few tears. I could feel Gingers frustration and fears. Her grandfather has early dementia and wants to find his wife who has been missing since WW2. The writing is great. The characters are great. 5 stars
This Side Of Yesterday by Angela D Meyer is a charming contemporary Christian novel and part of the Mosaic Collection. I adored it.
The novel has two major themes – of dementia and fostering. Dementia is a cruel disease that robs us of our loved ones bit by bit while they are still living. “I feel like I’m losing him.” It is upsetting for all concerned. “Even if I can’t remember, don’t forget me.” There are some very touching scenes that will bring a tear to your eye.
Fostering brings with it, its own set of challenges and needs. They “need our help not our judgment.” It is said in Africa, that it takes a whole village to raise a child. This is certainly true in the novel, with a wonderful community that pulls together to offer support. There is a beautiful partnership between a fostered teen and a grandfather with dementia. They offer each other mutual support.
We all need friends, friends who will help and support. The community in the novel meets all the needs that it sees.
We also need God. When times are hard, we may cry out, “Lord… be my strength.” When we come to the end of ourselves we can press into Him. Whatever we face, God walks alongside us. “God still cared for her in the middle of this upset.” We have to trust God to lead us through life. “Lord, help me believe all is well even when I don’t see it.” God is faithful, even when we cannot see the next step, we can trust Him to lead us.
Within the story there is a search, a search that began at the end of World War II. This reminds the reader that God will search for us, He will never give up until we come to rest in Him. In fact the very first question in the Bible is “Where are you?” in Genesis. God knows exactly where we are but He will passionately pursue us, even when we try to hide from Him. He will never give up until we come to Him and we are no longer lost.
This Side Of Yesterday was such a delightful book. I am sorry it has ended. I look forward to many more by Angela D Meyer.
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
I really loved this book and I loved the way it steadily warmed its way into my heart.
Angela did an amazing job in portraying how we use fear as an excuse not to live our most authentic life just like Ginger, many at times the excuse we give in avoiding not to hurt others or be a disappointment is just fear in disguise.
The steady consistent love of a friend is so reassuring and God always gives us our deepest desires and they are most likely not very far from us, case in point Pastor Mike. I loved how their love grew and developed, steadily and from the friendship angle.
The joy of true friends and genuine support system is one that should be cherished.
Dealing with aging and the illnesses that sometimes come with the aging process is one that appreciated (Dementia) because it’s a little different from what we typically experience in Nigeria with our aging population, however I totally experienced Ginger’s journey with her Grandfather.
Oh the joy of true love….
This book was such a delight. Thank you, Angela, for writing this book, The Mosaic collection and JustReads for my complimentary copy. I enjoyed my journey on ‘This Side of Yesterday’. I was NOT required to write a positive review; all thoughts and opinions are my own
The blurb had me needing to read this book as soon as I read it.
I understand the pain of a loved one going through dementia, I’ve seen the effects it has, and the want to help your loved one even when they don’t want help or understand what is going on, the struggle for independence. It is a hard journey, and that was one of the reasons I requested this book to review, another being that the Grandpa was a WWII Vet.
The cafe part of the story was cool, I liked how the author wrote about a normal thing like the cafe and still made it interesting!
And the guys were hilarious, I loved how they helped the boys with the plane, and everything that happened with that plot line, it’s sad that so few older people are like the ones in this book, the same goes for the kids.
The only thing I disliked about the book was that Mike had been married before, and what all happened with his ex… It wrapped up well though.
I was very happy with the ending, it was so absolutely adorable.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Ginger, the lady who thinks she has to do it all is overwhelmed with not only her job as owner of the Jukebox Café, but has a grandfather whose mind is deteriorating right before her eyes. What wonderful characters in the quaint, friendly town of Preston Hill Angela D. Meyer has created in this newest book in the Mosaic Collection. Thankfully, Ginger is blessed with faithful, although sometimes quirky friends, and I fell in love with them all.
The book explores the battles of dementia in a very gentle way, and provides a little family mystery which kept me eagerly turning the pages! With some solid Christian nuggets of wisdom sprinkled throughout, I found this book to be not only entertaining but inspiring.
I received a copy of this book from the author and was under no obligation to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
This is a realistic portrayal of how a person can feel overwhelmed by their circumstances. Ginger finds herself dealing with her aging grandfather’s dementia and struggling to keep his life-long business afloat. Add a minister who is becoming more than a friend and the possibility that she has a grandmother somewhere out there and you can see just how helpless she feels. This Side of Yesterday is a sweet story of love, perseverance, faith, and devotion and I understood Ginger’s emotions as she alternates between fear for her grandfather, impatience with his actions, and then overwhelming guilt over that impatience. The hope of finding a grandmother she has never known and her increasing awareness of her deepening friendship with her minister also throws her in a tailspin. He seems eager to help but is she willing to let him? Can she trust Pastor MIke’s assurances that God is truly with her on this unknown journey? Will her grandparents be reunited once again?
This is the eighth book of The Mosaic Collection and it is certainly a worthy addition. Faith, hope, and trust are always emphasized in these books and this book is no different. I certainly recommend This Side of Yesterday to all who enjoy contemporary fiction with a Christian message.
I received a digital copy of this book. I was under no obligation to leave a positive review and these are my honest thoughts.
This Side of Yesterday is the story of hard-working, self-sacrificing Ginger, owner of the Jukebox Cafe, who is struggling to keep her family business open and care for her curmudgeonly grandfather, Walter, who is in the early stages of dementia. This book addresses the issue of dementia in a tender way. Author Angela Meyer has created marvelously human characters in this charming faith-based novel. The theme of community is consistently woven through these pages.
Ginger is hesitant to open her bruised and weary heart to the possibility of a relationship with her friend and single pastor Mike. Mike is such a solid guy and he loves Ginger and her Walter, her grandfather.
I want to know and have people like these characters in my own life.
I love the Mosaic Collection of Christian faith-based books. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this sweet book in exchange for my honest review.
By the way, the prequel to this novel is a story title The Jukebox Cafe which is found in Hope is Born: The Mosaic Christmas Anthology, an equally marvelous Mosaic read.
Tender, sweet story with characters I want to know as friends and part of my community, This Side of Yesterday is one of my favorites of 2020.
This side of yesterday
This side of Yesterday is a book that is very inspiring. Ginger is taking care of her grandfather that has dementia. He is at the beginning stages. Ginger is also trying to run her cafe call the Jukebox. Ginger is dealing with a lot, just like people do in real life. I loved her character and how hard she tried.
I kept trying to figure out where the name This side of Yesterday for the book came from. Read to book to see if you can figure it out.
Grandpa wanted to find his family that he lost touch with years ago. Ginger helps him. Will they be able to find his family before it is too late?
I loved how Grandpa got a rescue dog. Also love the name of the dog. Dogs are so much help to us.
This story of a young woman caring for her WWII vet grandfather really touched my heart. Ginger is running the family owned Jukebox Cafe, and at the same time dealing with her grandfather’s onset of dementia. She is almost too busy and overwhelmed to recognize the love that is offered to her. I was shedding tears through the last half of the book. I highly recommend it.
A great book that was a perfect read. The characters were brought alive through the pages. It makes me want to read more of Angela D. Meyer’s writing.
A very entertaining read with stories of old love and new love intertwined and a mystery too. While helping Grandpa locate his old love, Ginger is presented with the opportunity for a new love. Does she dare step out and grab it or is she going to protect herself due to memories of being hurt by love in the past?
This Side of Yesterday is another beautiful addition to The Mosaic Collection— book eight, to be precise! These novels are all standalone stories by various authors— all completely different, but all with a common theme of faith. While I would certainly recommend all that I have read, you do not have to read them all to appreciate.
For me, This Side of Yesterday was one of those books that in the beginning, I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy. It had a bit of a slow start for me. I honestly couldn’t say if it was the fact that there was a lot going on to try to sort out in my head at first… or if it was just from starting to read in the midst of sheer exhaustion. Either way, it did take one time for me to really feel truly invested in the story. Once the search for Irene- Ginger’s grandmother who disappeared during WWII- really took off, I was absolutely hooked. I had to know if she was still alive, and what had happened there. I won’t give anything away, but I will say that this was a beautiful story and you may want to have your tissues handy! There were several other side stories going on at the same time, and a few of which I would have perhaps liked to see addressed a bit more (perhaps in future books?), but it was really this search that anchored the whole thing.
Overall, this was a really sweet story and one that fans of a good heartwarming romance are sure to enjoy.
**I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for consideration. All thoughts are 100% my own.
Oh my God!!!
I totally enjoyed this book. The flow of the story was beautiful, the characters stellar. You can not but fall in love with the characters. The plot twisty and engaging. The romance beautiful and in the right places. The small town setting just wonderful.
I loved how the story spoke about God’s faithfulness and love to a thousand generations. His working behind the scenes to make everything work for the good of His children ran so evidently throughout this book.
The story will warm your heart, rise your faith in God and cause some happy tears.
Angela D. Meyer is a super talented writer.
I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.
Ginger is struggling with the family business, the Jukebox Café and the simptons of early dementia of her grandfather, the only family she has left. He wants to find her missing wife Irene. When he came back from WWII she was no longer at their house, only their daughter. Can Ginger find Irene? Can she let Mike, the Pastor of Preston Hill, and a friend from a long time, help her with all her problems and show her his love? A sweet story.
I really enjoyed this story. Ginger reminded me so much of myself in so many ways. I loved the character of Mike and his persistence in pursuing Ginger and allowing her time to work through her fears. This story brought out so many wonderful emotions as I read it. Joy, laughter, sadness, longing, etc. I loved the happy ending also. I would encourage others to pick up a copy and enjoy a good book of God bringing the right people into our lives at the right time to help us when we need it the most. I received a complimentary copy of this book, but have freely chosen to share my own thoughts and opinions of this book!
Ginger takes care her old Granpa and runs her parents Jukebox Cafe’ in Preston Hill, a lot of work!
fortunately, her friends and Pastor Mike help her, because she always has too many things in her to-do lists.
“they had been teasing Ginger about her lists since they became friends”.
nice saying: “The best kind of love is real, not perfect”.
The book is realistic, nice, easy and fast to read, God centered.
the main character Ginger is sure lucky to have such a good friends to help her in difficult time of life!
This Side of Yesterday was a sweet story of a young woman and her elderly grandfather, her only known family, who was in the early stages of dementia. We got to journey with Ginger and Walter through the challenges of mourning their loss in anticipation of its inevitable happening. As Ginger dealt with a number of serious and exhausting issues, we also were privileged to observe the workings of her wonderful community of supportive friends as they stood in the gap for one another. My one objection was that the ending, though sweet, seemed quite unlikely. Not wanting to include spoilers I will end by saying that the story itself was enjoyable. I would recommend it as a light read and encourage the reader to do their own assessment and decide if they found the ending plausible.
