I really enjoyed the combination of mystery and supernatural elements in this book. On the mortal realm, the story revolves around Amber who is determined to discover who murdered her sister. In the spiritual realm, angels and evildwels battle for control of human souls. At the center of that conflict is Nester, an evidwel who suddenly finds himself questioning his beliefs. Toss in a remote location, plus a group of potential suspects trapped under one roof by a snowstorm, and you’ve got a tense and intriguing plot.
I loved the claustrophobic atmosphere created by the snowstorm, and the characters (both human and supernatural) present a varied and interesting group. Nester is a standout, as is Ed, an angel. The quips between them are priceless. This Last Chance fuses mystery, spiritual warfare, even a hint of potential romance. When the climatic scenes—on both planes—happen, there are more than a few surprises in store. An engaging read!
Heartsick Amber mourns the loss of her murdered sister and is frustrated with the lack of help from the local police force. Her mother seeks to forget in the bottom of a bottle and is no support for her daughter. Desperate, Amber turns to a private investigator for help.
Meanwhile, a war between good and evil is being waged between a society of evildwels and angels. There is a surprising plot at play that I wasn’t expecting in this suspenseful tale with evildwel Nester.
After spending generations killing and stealing souls, Nester feels a change come over him and seeks help from the angel tasked with watching over Amber.
A blizzard locks Amber at home with a group of suspicious people- one of which could be her sister’s killer. Will she survive long enough to find out the truth, and will Nester be able to stop the evildwels from taking over the world?
This story kept me guessing until the very end and hoping for Nester to overcome his dark side!
FAVORITE LINE
“You need to move on, Amber.” That line had assaulted her ears like an eager beginner’s drum solo. She was surprised that her eardrums hadn’t burst with good intentions.
THIS LAST CHANCE- D.L. FINN
This is an unexpected murder mystery with supernatural elements that add an extra layer of tension to an already suspenseful story.
Well worth the read!
Earlier this year, I read and enjoyed This Second Chance by author DL Finn. When I saw she’d released a second book revolving around the same paranormal world, even though I don’t often read in this genre, I wanted to reconnect with some wonderful characters, the evildwels. They come from another planet or galaxy, and they feed on human’s pain and misery, in direct opposition to the angels who are present to help people. In this installment, Nester might be aligning with the angels, and it’ll cause an all-out war with his kind.
Amber is devastated when her sister is murdered. Months later, she’s connecting with the senator her sister worked for, hoping he can help find the killer. She learns more than she expected from him, and it kicks off a new investigation. Meanwhile, a new friend named Britney, a young woman whose mother was killed recently too, bonds with Amber. And an author named Eli moves in next door to Amber, providing three people who support her through the grief. Soon, she finds herself being followed, and then a powerful storm knocks the power out of her cabin. She’s trapped one weekend with the senator, the senator’s aide, Eli, and Britney. It quickly becomes obvious that one of them is her sister’s killer.
Nester, in alternate chapters, reveals that the other evildwels are trying to kill Amber. Nester aligns with an angel in the hopes they can save Amber, but it might be too late when Amber’s mother is pulled into the drama. How does this all fit together? In a clever story that leaves readers intrigued by the relationships and the movable line between reality and the paranormal world just outside Earth. Finn is great at building light and slow suspense that jumps out at you in a climatic scene. I also love the way she creates chemistry in all the relationships, making it hard for readers to choose sides.
I recommend reading both books, and I’m curious if there are others and/or will be more in this collection. I must find time to check, as even though I’m not big in this subgenre, the true focus of the book was on the murder mystery and the balance of power. There weren’t any deus ex machina fantasy points that made me unclear how this paranormal world works… the evildwels felt more like serial killers, and Nester was like a spy who changed sides! So it really worked for me. A great way to blend the lines between genres and storytelling options. Give this one a chance!
This Last Chance by D.L. Finn explores a unique connection between Angels, evildwels and humans. The story underlines the fact that love eventually vanquishes evil. I marvel at the descriptive details about the Angels and their efforts to protect us from those who might harm us. Finn builds up suspense right in the beginning; it continues to grow and a nagging tension keeps you riveted to hear the outcome. A snowy and cold backdrop adds another dimension to the murder of Amber’s sister and her own safety.
Amber’s character is admirable, as she is observant, amiable and brave. She resolves to solve the mystery of her sister’s murder despite all the scary signs of being followed. Her patience and grit in the moment of crisis is remarkable. Even Angels love her. Nester too is drawn to Amber, he struggles to communicate with the winged ones but is scared of being overheard by an evildwel. His transformation is another amazing aspect of the story. I wonder how Finn could convert it into a feel good story despite the anxious moments. Highly recommended.
This story takes place on two levels, human and paranormal and makes for an intriguing subplot. Reporter Amber Dodges is determined to get to the bottom of her twin sister’s murder, unaware she is about to play a role in the survival of the country. Nor does she know that the death of her sister was caused by powerful evildwels, evil beings that use humans for hosts. As the story builds, it also chills and will have the reader looking over his/her shoulder. A suspenseful paranormal about the fight of good and evil.
