A riotously funny, emotionally raw New York Times bestselling novel about love, marriage, divorce, family, and the ties that bind—whether we like it or not. The death of Judd Foxman’s father marks the first time that the entire Foxman clan has congregated in years. There is, however, one conspicuous absence: Judd’s wife, Jen, whose affair with his radio- shock-jock boss has recently become … has recently become painfully public. Simultaneously mourning the demise of his father and his marriage, Judd joins his dysfunctional family as they reluctantly sit shiva and spend seven days and nights under the same roof. The week quickly spins out of control as longstanding grudges resurface, secrets are revealed and old passions are reawakened. Then Jen delivers the clincher: she’s pregnant…
“Often sidesplitting, mostly heartbreaking…[Tropper is] a more sincere, insightful version of Nick Hornby, that other master of male psyche.”—USA Today

I’d seen the movie years ago and wanted to read the book since they usually have more depth. It’s very well written and had me laughing hard many times and a few times my throat got thick. Great cast of characters and I could really relate to what Judd was going through. Family dynamics can be strained at the best of times and this family already had plenty of issues before coming back together for their father’s funeral. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Very slow but the characters were amazing and I loved the pace as it went along. I knew nothing of the Jewish faith so that was interesting as well.
Great Jewish Family humor!
Great book.
Love Jonathan Tropper. Great characters
Loved it. Strongly recommend.
A hysterically funny novel taking place while sitting shiva (7 days after a funeral.) ! Complex characters & family dynamics, without getting too heavy. Witty, sarcastic, & brilliant writing! The movie is similar & different; but also, well done!
Humorous story that follows a family through the grieving process. Memories, family expectations and guilt lead to acceptance.
Enjoyable read
hilarious and up-lifting
Slow with very little action. I just wanted to hurry up and get through with it!
Insightful
While I enjoyed the idea behind the storyline, I became very tired of every woman being described by her physical appearance. Constant analyzing of women’s bodies. In the end, I was so sick of the sexism that I vowed to never recommend this book.
I highly recommend reading this book….. you will really enjoy it!
Rarely do you find a book that contains all the elements of a great novel. I read at least 4 books a week, and this one had me totally absorbed from page 1. It is truly a masterpiece.
I read this several years ago and the one thing that really sticks with me is how this author made a story about a guy going through two horrible life events so funny. This is on my list of books to read a second time.
What a total hoot and an irreverant hoot to boot!
Loved the characters. Couldn’t put it down. Very enjoyable!
Saw the movie first which sometimes ruins the book for me.
I thought it was mediocre. It was a bit like the show “Arrested Development” but not quite as absurd. I didn’t really connect with any of the characters but it was very readable as I kept wanting to like it more.
