She hates him.He loves getting under her skin.Travis King is the worst kind of ahole. He taunts me for being a good girl and mocks my high standards. He’s cruel, crass, and has enough confidence to last two lifetimes. And I hate him.It wouldn’t matter so much if he were avoidable. But considering he’s my older brother’s best friend and roommate, I see him more than I’d ever want to. His sculpted abs … roommate, I see him more than I’d ever want to. His sculpted abs and gorgeous eyes are wasted on such an arrogant man, which makes me hate him even more.
Even though I’ve had a crush on him since I was ten, the feelings weren’t mutual and he’s made that very clear. He’s always loved getting under my skin and one night against my better judgment, I let him in my bed. I’ve succumbed to his manwre ways, but that doesn’t change a thing.
Because the King is about to get played at his own game—and lose.
Checkmate, King.
This is book 1 in the Travis & Viola duet and must be read first. Suggested for mature readers only.

This is the first book I read by Kennedy Fox and I was HOOKED instantly!!! Now I can’t stop!
Travis King and Viola Fisher have known each other since they were kids living across the street from each other. They were always close as kids, both secretly harboring feelings for one another. However, Travis was her brother’s best friend so they were probably doomed from the start.
As years went by Viola grew to hate Travis because of the smug, arrogant @$$hole he became ever since high school where he discovered girls and sex. They would constantly bicker with one another every time that they saw each other. So when Viola’s dorm decided to shut down for two weeks for spring break, she had no place to go…except for her brother’s house that he shared with the @$$hole. To make matters worse, Viola’s brother decided to go out of town to visit his girlfriend, leaving Travis and Viola alone for two weeks. Would they survive the two weeks, or would they kill each other?
Kennedy Fox did a great job pulling me into this story from the time I picked up this book (actually my kindle), until it was all over…leaving me in suspense with a cliffy ending. I really enjoyed the crazy antics that played out between Travis and Violet. It felt as if I was there with them through all of their ups and downs. My one complaint was that right when we got to the best part…they left me hanging with a cliffy ending, unable to get my grubby hands on the next book for awhile. Please, please, please hurry ladies with the next book…I NEED to know what happens next. I do have my theories, but all of this suspense has me feeling super stabby right now.
I have read all of the checkmate duets series. I loved them all but Viola and Travis are my favorite couple.
This is one of my all time favorite books! I loved it so much I read it in one sitting! It’s so good I’ve read it 3 times!
This is where I fell in love with the amazing Kennedy Fox! It was actually my first book to read and what do you know, it was there first ever book to write together! Lucky me!
Travis and Viola…
They will always be my first love couples! The way their story evolves, Viola is smart, witty and you can see why Travis couldn’t forget her even he is being alpha douche/mean to her…
How can he be self centred when she’s just next door! … but fair play to Voila on how she responded!
This book is about friendship, misunderstood, and lots of wanna smack that Travis!
It’s a very easy to read and you can’t help but continue to read the rest of the checkmate series!
You won’t be disappointed!
You’ll want more
Fantastic book!! Loved it.. Definitely a must read!!
This is the first book I read by them and I was sucked in right away. I started this book because I was going to a signing they were attending. I was about 75% through the book come signing day and I absolutely loved it. I bought the paperback and met their smiling faces.
Slight spoiler…This is a cliffhanger so be prepared. Good thing book two has already released. Bad news for me was I had to wait almost a month to read the next book.
I highly recommend this book and series. I have definitely found new authors that I love. When I get a chance I’ll be reading more books by then.
I sit here and try to type out this review, the only thoughts going through my mind are “OMG! Are you fucking shitting me right now? What the actual fuck?” And that’s because I am so wrapped up in these characters and this story.
Kennedy Fox – these two ladies, they have done me in. LOL I love this story so much. I am so into it, that I was truly talking out loud while reading like these two characters were right in front of me. It’s like this whole thing is happening in real life!!
Viola. She’s so damn feisty and a ball of fire – I love her. She has no problems with her nerdiness, hell she owns it. But her distaste and hatred for Travis is off the charts. And it’s not exactly a love-hate. Yes, she knows he’s attractive, but her feelings of any good towards him stop there.
Travis is a bonafide manwhore and he knows it. He doesn’t apologize for it. He even flaunts it!! He’s egoistical and doesn’t hide it. But yea, he’s allowed to – as terrible as that sounds to say. He’s just that kind of guy – he holds nothing back. What you see is what you get – should be his motto. HA!
You can feel so much between these two. The tension, animosity, pent up frustration, the sexual tension – everything is just sparks between them. It’s a natural hate/love relationship that’s been waiting to explode for years!! I can’t get enough of this story!!
And the ending – OMG!!! I just can’t handle it. I really can’t. And now I am stuck waiting to see how all this plays out. I am telling you right now, as soon as the next book is released, I am all over it. Everything else will cease and I am jumping right into it.
Amazing and fantastic read!!
I loved this book so much. This book was amazing and funny, I couldn’t put it down. This book is what began my reading obsession with a Kennedy Fox
This is one of those, “I need to sleep, but I can’t put it down” kid of books.
Loved this book!
I loved it! A must read!
Love this book! I love a book where it pulls you in and you cant put it down and laughs are a must! This book has it all!
First off, I have no clue why it took me so long to read this book. I really don’t. No excuses here. I should be ashamed of myself for not reading it sooner. *cue the GoT Shame gif*
Secondly, I’d like to place all blame on Kennedy Fox for my lack of sleep last night. Because OBVIOUSLY I couldn’t NOT start the second book in this duet after I was left with that murder-inducing, trauma-filled, edge-of-my-seat cliffhanger. *squinty side-eye*
But in all seriousness, this book was gooooood! I had my reservations within the couple chapters, mostly because I wanted to stab Travis in the gonads on numerous occasions. But I was won over by the witty and hilarious dialogue, more specifically the completely-indecent-but-I-loved-it sexual innuendos. Travis and Viola were so over the top in their interactions, that it went all the way from wrong into right. This story takes the enemies-to-lovers trope and skyrockets this book straight to the top.
I must go now. I NEED to finish reading the second book so my life can feel complete again. If you haven’t read this book yet, read it and come join me in my pit of worry and nail-biting anxiety.
5 Stars!
I couldn’t put this book down. I’m not usually like that with stories but this one grabbed me for some reason. I thought it was well written and super steamy!
War is an understatement
these two main people definitely have a war going on, with each other. There are childhood memories as well as new memories to sort through. Finally when you think it is all going to work out, there is a major twist. One that you are sure not to forget anytime soon.
cant wait for the second book
I loved the first book, all the anger, and built up emotion, and tension between the two characters is great. And I have such a strong love-hate for cliffhangers- I hate them, they drive me absolutely crazy, but I must also love them, because it seems I’m always reading books with them (or authors are just plain cruel ) !! Haha.
I love the game between Travis and Viola. I love their banter & everything-including their vulnerabilities, & emotions. I am definately team Traviola The cliff hanger of course drove me nuts & I had to know what happened next.
4.5 out of 5
Travis King will melt your panties off! Viola and his chemistry in this book will set your panties on fire! Absolutely loved this book! Loved the playful fighting between the two and how things gradually change for them through the book. Def Recommend this book!
Hot damn Travis King! This book is absolute royalty from the very start. Viola and Travis have been friends since they were young and then one event turns them against each other. Years later these two are spending time in the same house together for a few weeks and that’s when things get good. With Travis being the ladies man and knowing it he always gets what he wants, Viola is the smart bookworm focused on school and keeping to herself. When these two battle you can feel the sexual tension and you just want to scream for them to get together. This friends to lovers story is steamy and leaves you aching for more, cannot wait to get my hands on book 2 of this series.
Viola has hated Travis since she’s been thirteen years old after overhearing him talking to her brother. With her break coming up when she realises that she’s going to be alone in the house with Travis while her brother visits his girlfriend she can’t believe her bad luck.
As the two continue to torment each other the lines of what they are doing get blurred when they finally give into their attraction. When Viola finally asks Travis what they are doing, and forgets she had a date, they go back to square one. Seeing that he upset Viola Travis decides that this time he’s not going to let her run. When Travis finds out why Viola hates him he can’t believe it and lets her know that he didn’t want to turn out like his father.
While they are making up for lost time Viola’s brother turns up unexpectedly and they must, hide what they have been doing. Just when Viola thinks she can talk to Travis and work things out, she gets a phone call that changes it all.
