Drew Fisher is the type of guy every girl wants.Noble police officer by day, charming prince by night. He has no idea the effect he has on women, especially me—his little sister’s best friend. I’m the blonde Southern belle who lives up to the cliché, except I have my own quirks. I’m smart as a whip, can change my own oil, and recite The Pledge of Allegiance backward, but he doesn’t see that girl. … backward, but he doesn’t see that girl. It’d be easier to forget him if he wasn’t my roommate and if the first thing I saw in the morning wasn’t his shirtless body covered in tattoos. I’ve crushed on him since the day we met, but he’s made it perfectly clear where we stand—just friends.
I know I need to move on and accept that his feelings will never be mutual, but every day he smiles at me, I’m left dreaming of what if. He has girl issues, and I’ve got a crush I can’t deny. We’re friends, but I want more. One drunken hookup leaves us with much more than a platonic friendship. Pretending it never happened proves to be more difficult than anticipated.
A crazy ex-girlfriend, a dangerous war of stolen glances, and passionate kisses leads to the most reckless battle yet. I won’t be a pawn in his game, but I’ll play by his rules if it will show him I’m the one worth breaking them for.
Checkmate, Prince Charming.
This is book 1 in the Drew & Courtney duet and must be read first. Suggested for mature readers only.

4 stars for Checkmate: This is Reckless by Kennedy Fox. This is book 3 in the Checkmate series and book 1 for Courtney and Drew. I am going to start by saying I love Courtney’s character and she is someone I would want to be friends with. Oh and Drew , so yummy! I mean what is better than a hot cop. Drew has been dating Mia off and on for years and now that they break up her crazy really starts to show. Courtney has wanted Drew since the first time she meets him, to bad at first he only seen her as one of the guys, one of his best friends. All of that changes one night and soon they have a relationship. I love these two together in this romantic friends to lovers suspense. Let me just worn you, this book as one hell of a cliffy. Great work Kennedy Fox.
Page Turner for sure. Thing took me by surprised
Story ended with no ending, forcing you to buy another book to finish the story. Will never buy another book of this author. Very manipulative.
Amazing read.
good book. will read more of her books
Cliff hanger… need next book to get to the end
Didn’t like how the end just cut off….
“Checkmate: This is Reckless” (nook book version) by Kennedy Fox was very good. I was disappointed that this is book one (1) of (2) but I was at fault for not catching that information in the overview. I prefer to read one book to a HEA. However, since there was a cliff-hanger, I had to purchase book two (2). “This is Reckless” contained some bothersome word usage: “once” was used at the beginning of several sentences when another word would have been preferable (i.e., “Once my shift is over . . . “; “Once I’m packed . . . “, etc.).
This book is such a page turner and made me not able to put it down! Such a good read!!
Like all her books I thought this book was fabulous,I read it from cover to cover, couldn’t put it down. Yes,it was that good, I loved it.
If you haven’t read Kennedy yet, what are you waiting for ?
THe best and amazing
Wow! Just Wow! I forgot how much I actually loved this series. I have actually been a Kennedy Fox (KF for short) pimp so to speak for the past couple of months lol. So I have read the entire series already, but with “This is Effortless” being released I decided to re-read “This is Reckless” just to refresh myself with the series since it has been a couple of months, plus I am just completely in love with Courtney and Drew! Although this can be read as a stand alone, we continue to spend time with Viola, Travis, Courtney, and Drew. Just like in the first set in the series, we are treated to the ups and downs of finding love in unexpected places.
We are in for a treat with the story of Courtney and Drew. Courtney is the bubbly Texan girl who has been desperately in love with Drew for only lord knows how long. Poor Drew, the hot Sacramento Police officer that can never make heads or tails of woman because he is so blinded by the infamous, Mia Montgomery aka the bitch who needs to DIE! Although the book has a slow beginning (more than likely because Mia won’t bounce), we are finally given what we want Drew finally really “sees” the love that he has for Courtney. The way these two interact with each other is fascinating to watch. They are playful and funny to start with, but all turns into something more.
If you have read the first set of books, you are well aware that of Drew’s toxic relationship with the infamous Mia Montgomery. Now I am sure I can speak for all of us when I say, Mia has got to go! Drew finally comes to his senses! Glory Hallelujah. As Drew and Courtney grow closer to one another, Drew is able to see the negative effect that his relationship has had on everyone around him including himself. With this realization we are FINALLY about to be rid of her for good or are we?
KF also takes that time to show us a little bit about how Drew’s job affects his family and now Courtney. Drew has an altercation with perp that ends up being his and Courtney’s worse nightmare. KF does not glance over this event and sweep the event other the rug. They take the time to show the effects that these events have on both the officer and their families. Now this is a romance novel, but we are given a glimpse of what could happen. In doing so, we are shown a more strengthened relationship between the two main characters.
Would I recommend this? Yea, well I kind of already have. I would even say that I am a slightly bigger fan of Courtney and Drew than Viola and Travis, so I am excited to see how they are going to complete the story. Thank heavens that I have graciously been provided with an ARC from Kennedy Fox for an honest review of “This is Effortless” because as always KF is a cliffy bitch and leaves us hanging with nowhere to go with this ending. What has crazy Mia done this time? Well be sure to come back and check out my review of the next book in the series in a couple of days.
Drew and his on-again-off-again girlfriend Mia, were having problems again. Let me just say, even since the first two books, I haven’t liked Mia, ever since her trying to sabotage Travis and Drew’s & Travis and Viola’s relationships- but she gets to a whole new level of crazy in these books.
Viola and Travis get married after baby number two- and her tubes tied, because after a puppy and two kids- they can’t handle any more. For a week before the wedding, after Drew and Mia broke up again, after she gave him an ultimatum- her or his roommate, he wasn’t having it anymore- Drew has been dreaming about Courtney, and not in the just friends and roommates way. Him and Courtney get fairly drunk at the wedding, and they (finally) hookup. Come morning, he claims he doesn’t remember it.
So with them trying to figure out where they stand, with the stress of his job as a police officer, impromptu trips to Texas, and Vegas, and the drama of his ex Mia these two go on a whirl wind of emotions & tensions run high. Do they finally reveal their feelings for each other? Does the stress of the job get to them? Does Mia bring a ton of unwanted drama into their lives?
I give both books 4 out of 5 . These were great quick steamy reads and a great friends to lovers romance
f: Courtney
m: Drew
(Dual POVs)
Courtney has had a crush on Drew ever since she laid eyes on him but Drew has only ever looked at Courtney as one of the guys, one of his friends. I admired Courtney for the patience and loyalty she had while supporting Drew as a friend and watching as he has struggled over the years with Mia. I was just as frustrated as Courtney was with Drew for falling for Mia’s constant manipulation and there were times where I just wanted to shake him and wake him up from his Mia- induced haze! With that being said, I couldn’t hate how honorable and loyal he was.
Thankfully, Drew finally starts to see Mia’s true ways around the same time a rather lucid dream has him seeing Courtney in a new light! I was so excited for Courtney when all her patience paid off and she was finally able to have a fair chance with Drew! It was such a smooth and easy transition to being more than friends since they had been living together and had been friends for approximately two years.
In summary, I liked the writing style as it was engaging, but I wasn’t a huge fan of some of the decisions the characters made. For instance, there seemed to be a lot of assumptions and avoidance when it came to certain topics which just came off as a bit immature to me. Other than their few lapses of judgement, I did enjoy these characters and I will be reading the next book cause I do want to see them get their HEA!
Favorite Quotes:
Those are the same eyes that have looked at me over the years, and the message has always been the same. I want you. Only this time, I recognize that look and welcome it because I’m looking at her the same way. -Drew
”I’ve never fallen for someone so hard, Courtney. As much as I didn’t see it at first, I’m seeing and feeling everything now. It’s consuming me.” -Drew
Hello Deputy Fisher. Courtney & Drew have always been teasing and joking with eachother and she has always spoken her mind about Mia, Drew’s girlfriend. I seriously cannot stand that woman and it irks me that Drew is constantly going back to her over and over again. When Courtney moves in with Drew their bond is stronger then ever even though Mia is clearly not happy about it. Courtney won’t tell Drew how she truly feels about him deep down and past the friendship zone. I loved seeing this story develop with all the twists and turns. That ending…. whattttt? I cannot wait to read This Is Effortless. As much as this can be read as a standalone I recommend reading the entire Checkmate Series because each and every book is AMAZINGLY GOOD. This is without a doubt MUST READ.
Review-
Oh My Gosh I Love Drew and Courtney so much!! #teamdrewteny for life!!! This book is so AMAZING!! Its so cute and it is also suspenseful. Oh I Love It!!!
Courtney has been in Love with Drew for years. He is one of her Best Friends and her roommate plus he is in love with someone else. So she can never pass the Friends Zone no matter how badly she wants to. Then on the night of her best friends Viola’s wedding she and Drew finally get together. Having Drew is everything she has wanted so she will fight to make it stay.
Drew sees Courtney as one of the guys, his best friend, his roommate nothing more. He is in love with his on-again off-again girlfriend Mia. He loves Mia he always has but lately he has been seeing Courtney in a new way and he realizes that Mia is toxic for him. Then on the night of his best friend Travis and little sister Viola’s wedding he has enough liquid courage and finally goes for Courtney. He wants her and he will do everything he can to keep her.
Oh My gosh they way they love each other is everything!!! This Love story is so Cute!! Of Course in Kennedy Fox fashion they ended with a cliff hanger that had me screaming “WHAT” “NO” “WHY”!!! Oh I Loved it so much!!
Omg, I read this entire book today! I am in love with This is Reckless! I have not read the first two books in the series, but I most definitely will be doing so!
Courtney and Drew are friends and roomates. Courtney is hilarious and one of those people everyone wants to be friends with. How she can live with Drew, the sexy cop AND her best friend, without wanting to jump his bones, I’ll never know.
Throw in the bitch of a girlfriend, Mia, and you feel nothing but sorry for poor Drew. If he would only see what is right in front of him…
This book was a rollercoaster ride full of emotions. One minute I was laughing, the next I felt the pain of what Courtney was dealing with and then wanting to kick Drew where the sun don’t shine for putting up with Mia.
I am completely smitten with Drew and Courtney and cannot wait to see how their story ends.
Easy read, HEA. Great summer book!
One of the my favorite book series!
