“This is How I Save My Life” is Amy B. Scher’s account of her self healing journey both before and after a diagnosis of stage four Lyme disease.
Amy sought treatment from the best medical clinics in the US, yet her health continued to deteriorate.
However, “Fate” intervened and Amy learns of a clinic in Delhi, using ground breaking stem cell treatments on patients with spinal injuries, and she is successful in being accepted for treatment.
Although costly, her parents support her decision, and travel with her to India.
I enjoyed her honesty, which includes both the highs and the lows of her transformation, as the stem cells invite change not only on her physical body, but on her emotions, mind and spirit.
The Indian doctors provide many pearls of wisdom, including:
“The Universe is shifting to bring you what you need to heal yourself, so then you will be able to move on and do bigger things.”
Amy’s transformation continues and indeed never ends, as I too have found on my own journey with chronic illness.
I couldn’t put this book down! Amy’s story is one of self-discovery and healing. This book will make you laugh, while also giving you hope that healing is possible. It is incredibly well-written and takes the reader on a journey. I highly recommend this read!!
This was a great book with the problem being you had to put it down now and then. I loved the entire story and the ending was awesome. The funny part is that I saw the cover and I adore elephants. So delighted to have been drawn to the book even if I was baited under false pretenses 😉
The author shared ideas of health and healing from both Western Medicine and Eastern Medicine and all with a ver personal perspective. Using a simple style of writing she covered a difficult topic of life and death.
First 3/4 of the book makes it worth the read. Especially if you like a different take on sort of a “travel” style book. But the last 1/4 of the book drops off and IMHO could have been shortened to keep it more readable.
Very interesting!
I am reading this now and find myself laughing at every turn of the page. It takes s very funny book to make me laugh out loud.
It incorporated a little bit of reality and a little bit of the ‘unreal’. Some day I hope to visit New Orleans. The origins of the inhabitants were informative. It held my interest but the ending was a little too unrealistic for me. I’m sure New Orleans will be in sharp contrast to my Boston roots. And then again we are becoming “one world”.
I wanted to love this book but the writing just wasn’t good. Story had potential-maybe a better editor could have saved it.
I couldn’t put it down, I seriously read it in a day while on vacation. Such an amazing story of survival.
In a difficult situation, Amy is able to take us on her journey with honesty and humor. Never sugar-coating but always positive, she is a real warrior and inspiration to anyone suffering from chronic illness or loved ones of those who have suffered from chronic illness. When you read her book, you feel like you are having a face-to-face conversation with an old friend. “One’s path will unfold in its own time, revealing pieces of the puzzle only as they are ready to be healed. It will not always be in your time, but it will happen.”
I love books that feature women fearlessly chasing their dreams and Amy Scher not only did that, she healed herself and found true love. Who could ask for anything more?!
This story is a true inspiration about the power of self-healing and self-determination. Amy’s story allows you to truly get to know her and her powerful experience of her life-changing journey. Definitely a great read for anyone who could use an uplifting story of courage, taking risks, and the importance of having a love for life.
I loved this book. Amy Scher truly has a gift for story-telling while going through a difficult illness to treat. Her vivid descriptions of location and her family made this a realistic and entertaining read. Her medical journey was informative but that was a bonus.
A unique and talented voice has written a compelling, truthful and funny account of finding healing even when your mind and body is hurting the most. As she walks the line between life and death, you will want to take every step with her on this incredible journey. A must read!
One of my very favorite reads of recent years (and I read a lot). I couldn’t put it down. It is so many things at once — a memoir, a travel story, and an incredibly moving story of physical and emotional healing. Delightful voice, accessible and yet never oversimplifies — a rare combo. Brava, Amy!
This is a story of faith, hope, strength and love. Anyone on a healing journey, struggling with a challenge in their lives or looking for real-life inspiration will get so much from this book.
