Logan Knight is a real life knight in shining armor. A detective godsend in a sleek black suit has me thinking less than secretive thoughts.Brooding and mysterious, he’s the kind of guy every girl instantly notices. Between his seductive smirk and charming good looks, it’s no wonder I can’t help the way he makes me feel whenever I’m near him. Too bad he’s unavailable—or so he says.He thinks I’m … says.
He thinks I’m a do-gooder who shouldn’t get involved with a guy like him. His past is messy and relationships just add to that. He insists the timing is all wrong and he’s devoted to his career, but I don’t buy that excuse for a second. I see the way his body tenses and his jaw ticks every time another guy is around me. He just won’t admit it, but I’m more determined than ever to show him what he’s missing.
I’m a devoted animal rescuer and I’ll risk everything to save them, but when a dramatic turn of events puts both our lives at risk, I’m positive Logan will write me off for good. But when he asks for my help with a personal crisis, I know it’s my last chance to finally show him I can handle anything he throws my way—messy past and all.
He might think he has me all figured out, but I’ll prove him wrong no matter what he thinks. This game of push and pull has me running in circles. One wrong move and we could both lose.
Checkmate, Knight.
This is book 1 in the Logan & Kayla duet and must be read first. Suggested for mature readers only.

How is this my first Checkmate Duet ????? *blink*
Logan Knight has some serious baggage. He seriously picked a winner there with the mother of his little girl #sarcasm Good Lord she was quite the menace LOL Which obviously puts his guard up when it comes to relationships. I mean who would want to subject THAT to anyone?! I totally was on his page with that but I felt the attraction he had for Kayla thru the prose of this story and it tugged at my heart. There is no way not to love Kayla. She was the whole package I tell ya. Obviously, we don’t get a wrap-up here and the end to tbhis part is quite dramatic so thank God we don’t have to wait too long for the conclusion of their journey! Here’s to hoping the ride is less bumpy in this next half (although I doubt it will)!
I am super stoked to have finally read this duo, Kennedy Fox. THIS story was perfect and I’m sure when I go back to the beginning next month they will also be as perfect! 🙂
I could not put this book down! I’ve waited so long for Kayla and Logan’s story! So many twists, sexy, and emotional moments!! I already bought book 2 to start ASAP!
Another amazing Kennedy Fox book! I highly recommend reading it! This book makes you feel so many emotions and it will keep you on the edge of your seat having no idea what might happen next!
Kayla is pretty straight forward about how she feels about Logan but he isn’t as open about it. Kayla has a very sweet side to her with wanting to save and rescue dogs, even if it put her danger. Logan is dealing with some of his own personal demons and he has to fight through that and decide if he wants to open himself up again or not. In the end he decides to give it a chance and when they finally come together they are on fire! Logan will melt your heart and panties off! Kayla has a bad girl edge to her and isnt afraid to let Logan know when they come together. Once they come together they can’t stand not being together.
The ending will leave you on the edge of your seat wondering what is next to come for the two of them!
I cannot wait for the next book to come out to find out what happens next for Kayla and Logan!
Logan has issues, which prevent him from dating. Kayla wants nothing more than to tear down his walls and worm her way into his heart. Their story is fantastic and that ending…OMG.
Another amazing story from the author. It keeps the reader engaged and the pages turning. This series has been amazing and I’ve loved every book so far.
This is Dangerous is Book 1 of Logan and Kayla’s duet. I’ve been waiting for their story since they met in Travis and Viola’s duet. Logan is a mysterious, brooding detective and single father. Kayla is an interior designer and dog lover/rescuer who grew up in the foster system. She devotes all of her spare time to helping those in need—both animals and humans.
Kayla is not one to shy away from her feelings and makes it known that she wants more than friendship with Logan. Logan, on the other hand, is full of excuses to as why he can’t date Kayla. The timing isn’t right. He’s focused on his career. In actuality, Logan thinks Kayla deserves better than him, someone who can devote all of their time and attention to her.
After continuously trying to break down Logan’s walls, Kayla decides that if she’s ever going to get over her feelings for Logan that she needs to start dating. This turns out to be just the push Logan needs to stop resisting his attraction to Kayla. Though he’s scared to let anyone in after his past he knows a good thing when it’s right in front of him so he’s determined to juggle a demanding career, single fatherhood, and a new relationship.
There are a few skeletons in both Logan and Kayla’s past so I’m interested to see how everything plays out in the second book of their duet. Without giving too much away, this does end in a cliffhanger. And boy is it a doozy. You’ll definitely want to have Book 2, This is Beautiful, ready to devour.
Lia Langola has been spot on narrating this entire series. She has adapted her voice to fit each character in this series perfectly including Logan and Kayla. She was able to inflect Kayla’s sweetness and Logan’s gruffness into her narration seamlessly.
Logan, a veteran turned police officer. He has his struggles that keep him from letting others in. It breaks my heart when I hear his pain.
Kayla, a reject magnet when it comes to dating but a heart full of gold. Her luck with men is absolutely horrible. And it makes you wonder if it’s because fate knows she should be with Logan.
I love these two, this story made my heart melt, confuse me, then shock me.
I have to say, I was more emotionally pulled into this story than the ones prior and those were amazing.
I can’t wait to see what happens next. Yes this is a first of two books with a cliffhanger but with experience of reading/listening to these series, I’m never disappointed and always excited for the next one.
Book 5 in the Checkmate series and book 1 in the Logan and Kayla’s duet. Loved this addition to this series. Logan and Kayla was a great couple. The push and pull between them was so good. Lia does a great job in narrating this story. She was able to take Kennedy’s words and bring them to life and take you on a ride that will leave you wanting more. Can’t wait to see how their story ends.
After all the tension, Logan and Kayla finally have their duet! Kayla has been lusting after Logan Knight for a while and Logan can’t deny his feelings for Kayla anymore.
Logan is a single father and a detective for the Sacramento PD. Logan has been building walls around himself for years after coming back from the military and getting divorced. Kayla has had a hard life growing up but she tries to make the best out of her life. She has a successful career and volunteers as much as she can.
I loved Logan and Kayla so much. They had been through so much and still found each other. Their romance starts as a slowish burn romance because they are dancing around their feelings. But once they get together, it’s hot and steamy. You’ll probably end up turning up the AC while reading or listening to this story. The Queens of Cliffhangers leave us with a jaw dropping cliffhanger that I can’t wait to dive into.
I listened to this story as an audiobook and Lia Langola is amazing per the norm. She is so talented as a solo narrator. She flawlessly goes back and forth between Kayla, Logan and all the secondary characters voices.
Kayla Sinclair was raised in foster care and is now an interior designer. She has a group of loving friends but she dreams of having a family of her own especially if that family includes Logan Knight. Who wouldn’t love a girl based on her feelings about doughnuts and animals?
Logan is a police detective but his difficult past has made him closed off and detached. He is attracted to her but feels she deserves someone so much better than him and the problems he carries.
They met through mutual friends but he has rebuffed all the attempts that Kayla has made to become closer but fate has other ideas. He tries to keep his distance but she knows that he is interested and slowly but surely she ingratiates her way into his life and his heart and their chemistry was explosive.
The characters both have pasts they would like to forget, the banter between them humorous and the cliffhanger ending leaves you wanting more. The narrator does a great job and makes it easy to differentiate between the characters.
This is the fifth book in the Checkmate Duet Series, and the first book in the Logan and Kayla’s Duet. Kayla, an animal rescuer, is smart, strong, and caring. Logan, a detective, is handsome, protective, and supportive. They both had a difficult past. Skylar, Logan’s daughter, is lovely. The characters are well developed and interesting. The storyline is well written, and intriguing, filled with drama, secrets, and twists and turns. The story ends on a big cliffhanger, and I can’t wait to listen to This is Beautiful, the second book in this duet. Lia Langola has a beautiful voice, very pleasant to listen to. She has a great range of voices, easy to distinguish. She has a great male voice. I love this Series.
From an Ember…
Remember Tom Hanks in “Cast Away” when he was trying to light a fire? I know. Stick with me. He had the tiniest ember-just a glimmer of what could be. It was so fragile, and he was so desperate. But he worked at it, and POOF! The ember grew into a blaze with Tom Hanks running around like an idiot screaming “FIRE!!!”
I couldn’t help flashing on that iconic scene as I read this book, because that’s basically what happens to Kayla and Logan. The smoldering ember burned for so long as they did a slow dance around each other. Then suddenly the ember is a raging inferno and Kayla and Logan are burning the place down. These two went from 0 to 60 in nothin’ flat! Sweet sprinkled donuts! When these walls finally fell, they crumbled fast and completely. Wahoo. What a love story.
If you’re new to the Checkmate series, you don’t have to have read all the others to enjoy this novel (although you’ll enjoy it best if you do). But be aware that this is part of a duet featuring Logan and Kayla, and this volume does end with quite a cliffhanger. *dreaded beasts* Just be prepared with the next volume and all is well.
This is a great story with two wonderful characters that can’t help but melt your heart. It’s very well written and narrated, making a great experience for the reader.
Kennedy Fox does it again!! Man oh Man, this book!! I was so excited to listen to the last duet in the Checkmate Duet Series, Kayla and Logan’s story. I enjoyed the slow burn, will they or won’t they, chemistry Kayla and Logan had throughout the book. When they final got together I was so happy because they are perfect for each other. I like that it didn’t drag out and we got to enjoy them as a couple. This book had me entertained from the start, filled with sweet, steamy and laugh out loud moments. There are still so many secrets yet to be discovered and now a twist to Kayla and Logan’s story, can’t wait to listen to book two to find out how it ends! As with her other narrations, Lia Langola wonderful narration of this book captivated me. It was phenomenal and she did a great job narrating dual POV bringing both Kayla and Logan to life. It was easy to fall into the story and not get lost in the who is who with Lia’s narration She is an entertaining storyteller and has become one of my favorite female voices to listen to!
*received review copy in exchange for honest review*
Slow burn. Some angst and drama. Lots of heat. Keeps you interested till the end. Love Kayla and Logan. Logan is definitely a knight. Cliff hanger makes the next book a must to read/listen. Biting my nails… Love all the characters in this series. Narration is pefect.
*review for Audible version*
This listen was so satisfying. After listening to the the second duet in this series, Logan and Kayla were highly anticipated for me. They are fire together. The push and pull from them is electric, leaving me wanting to devour their story so fast.
Logan is hiding part of his life from his friends, especially Kayla. They’ve become close and Kayla desires more. Logan is keeping her at a distance because of some internal demons he has. There’s no doubt that he wants more and its getting harder and harder to fight it. Kayla is one of kindest and giving people but even she has her secrets. As if it couldn’t get any harder for them, another obstacle is thrown in their way.
I can’t wait to start the next book in this duet! I need to know what happens so badly! I’m so in love with this couple and their story. My heart is swooning!
AUDIOBOOK REVIEW
I have fallen in love with Lia Langola’s narrations. I love how she takes on the role of Logan and Kayla so well!
This is book one in this duet and we are left on a cliffhanger. However I love Logan and Kayla’s story so much! I remember reading this book and thinking how much I loved it. What makes this book even better is listening to Lia Langola’s narration. She is becoming one of my favorite narrators and I will always listen to the books she narrates. There is so much soul in this book and she takes it and brings it life!
Thank you Kennedy Fox for book one in this duet and I can’t wait to listen to book 2 in this duet.
This is Dangerous is friends to lovers story about two people who have a past that is full of secrets. Kayla is the type of person you strive to become. She selfless and loving and bubbly and just an amazing person all around. Who would have thought she would have had such a difficult and secretive past but she does…and one that she’s told no one about. Logan is a brooding, serious, sexy as heck ex military and present day detective who has a past that he is not proud of and that he doesn’t talk about with anyone. He’s falling for his best girl friend fast but he will have to push her away because he think she deserves so much better than him. He is broken and just no, he can’t have her. But dang it if he can stand anyone else with her. Until he almost loses her then he can’t hold back anymore. Kissing her just isn’t an option. Except all the secrets and all the walls …it just doesn’t look like they will be able to overcome their problems and just be together or can they? I received a free advanced copy to read and review…or in this case listen to and review…and I am dying to know what happens next. In typical Kennedy Fox fashion…of coarse they leave us hanging by a thread with a cliffy that just…well sucks lol. Now on to the next one cause waiting is not an option!!!!!
I really loved this Audiobook for Kayla and Logan’s story. Lia Langola completely nailed the performance, at this point her narration would fool you to believe it’s duel not a single narrated audiobook. I cannot fault her at all for how she portrayed the characters in This Is Dangerous.
Kayla and Logan are two secondary characters we have got to know a little throughout the series to date and I was intrigued to know more about the mysterious Logan and why he wouldn’t give in to the attraction he clearly has for Kayla. Their romance is a slow burn but one I enjoyed, it gave me time to get to know these characters understands what Logan especially has been through. Like any other Kennedy Fox book in this series there are little nuances that hint at the bumps in the road that are speeding towards the Hero and heroine but there are a few twists in the story that I certainly did not see coming!
Logan and Kayla are such likeable characters and a sense of family, supportiveness and friendship holds strong in this story. Both main characters are protectors, putting others before themselves regardless of the consequences. The secrets that are hidden play a part in the disaster that comes into play at the end of the novel and I am waiting on baited breath for Part 2!
Oh my can Kennedy Fox give us a dozy of a cliffhanger. This story really had my heart going out to Kayla and Logan. They were two very different people and yet fit each other perfectly. This slow burn romance was only getting started toward the end of the book and then bam…I can’t wait to read book 2.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story! It pulled me in from beginning to end with these characters. This is the 5th book in the Checkmate series but it is the first in Logan and Kayla’s duet. It can be read as a standalone though there is a lot of extra enjoyment that you get if you have read the previous books. We meet both Logan and Kayla in the very first book as they are connected with those characters as good friends and we get to see more of them in Courtney and Drew’s duet and see them start dancing around each other. I loved getting to see them really becoming friends in this book. We get to learn part of the reason why Logan isn’t dating and get to see Logan and Kayla becoming best friends and opening up and relying on each other with the things going on in their lives. Kayla is really drawn to Logan and really wants to give it a shot but she doesn’t push him too hard. Logan is drawn to Kayla as well but his reasons continue to hold him back as he doesn’t want to screw things up, between him and Kayla and other parts of his life that are more out of his control. I loved the way that this story developed. The way that everything happens it feels very realistic and believable. I truly enjoyed this characters and can’t wait to get the rest of their story.
I listed to the audio version of this book and it absolutely added to my pleasure and had me fully immersed in the story. The narrator does a phenomenal job with the characters, the emotions, and all the different voices. You can definitely tell who is talking with just the single narrator as she has different voices for all of the characters, not just the main characters.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
